Xiaomi, like other big brands, offers a limited lifespan of software updates and upgrades for devices. As one set comes under the hammer, new and improved products emerge to fill the void. The Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 9, and Redmi 7A are among the new additions to this list. The trio will not receive any security or MIUI interface updates beginning on August 25.

The Redmi 7A and Mi 8 were both launched in 2018 while the Mi 9 was launched in 2019. Owners of the Mi 8, Mi 9, and Redmi 7A did not receive the newest MIUI 13 update from Xiaomi. The models did, however, receive MIUI 12.5 as the most recent upgrade. This news will come as a shocker to Mi 9 owners who are expecting that the flagship device will get one or two more updates before the company pulls the plug on software support. In fairness, the phone was launched just 27 months back, meaning the company only provided software support for a little over two years.

The end-of-support list is a constantly changing list of older devices that have completed their software life cycle. Most OEMs limit firmware upgrades to two major upgrades per device during its lifespan. This could take several years. Xiaomi’s End-of-Support (EOS) list currently includes 43 Mi and 38 Redmi smartphones, bringing the total number of devices to 81.

Last month, soon after Microsoft released the Windows 11 Preview, the Mi 8 smartphone from Xiaomi was flashed with the Windows 11 operating system. The development came soon after the newer OS was loaded on the Lumia 950 XL smartphone by some developers.

Now, a new report claims that the project of flashing the Windows 11 operating system on the Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone has made significant progress. A video related to the project reveals support for GPU, power management, Wi-Fi, and some other features working normally on the device.

However, nothing everything is working as intended. For instance, there are still issues with the Bluetooth driver and the graphics processor cannot render x64 programs. But we expect many of the issues will get resolved in the coming weeks or months, as the development keeps going on.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and the Xiaomi Mi 8 aren’t the only smartphones running the Windows 11 operating system. As per the report, several devices powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC have successfully run the latest Windows OS.

The list of such smartphones includes OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, Xiaomi Pocophone F1, Meizu 16th, Meizu 16th Plus, Hammer Nut R1, Black Shark Phone 1, OPPO Find X, Xiaomi MIX2S, LG G7, Samsung S9+, Nubia X, Nokia 9 PureView, ASUS ZenFone 5Z, and Vivo NEX dual-screen version, among others.

Microsoft has released the first Windows 11 Insider Preview for the Dev channel which is named Build 22000.51. The early preview version allows users to test-drive the features that are coming to the official version.

As the preview version has been released by the Redmond-based tech giant, the Windows 11 ARM version has also surfaced online and some developers have managed to load this newer Windows operating system on Lumia 950 XL smartphone.

Not just that, some reports have revealed about Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone getting flashed with the Windows 11 Preview operating system. While Windows is working on the smartphone, it still doesn’t support touch screen functionality and USB port.

Although Microsoft has given up on its Lumia smartphones, users are still tinkering with the older models. Last year, a group of developers managed to port the full Windows 10 operating system on Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones.

Developers have also managed to add Continuum support as well as a custom phone dialer app on a Lumia smartphone running Windows operating system. They even reached the ability to detect the SIM card on the device.

There’s no way Windows operating system on smartphones is getting official, at least not anytime soon, but it’s interesting to see developers making progress, boosting the development of Windows on ARM project.

Xiaomi began the rollout of stable MIUI 12.5 for flagship devices in China recently and it is expected to expand up to 28 devices soon. Meanwhile, Xiaomi executive has confirmed that the MIUI 12.5 will also arrive on older devices like Xiaomi Mi 8 series, MIX 2S, and MIX 3.

Xiaomi rolled out the MIUI 12 update for the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and MIX 3 back in August 2020. The devices, which didn’t make the cut in the Android 11 eligible devices list, are said to get the MIUI 12.5 update as per the Xiaomi executive Zhang Guoquan’s post on Weibo.

He says that the MIX 2S has Snapdragon 845 chipset and the engineers have worked on the MIUI 12.5 on its update together with MIX 3. Speaking of which, the MIX 3, which also has Snapdragon 845 chipset, launched with MIUI 10 while the MIX 2S came with MIUI 9 out of the box.

Hence, the MIUI 12.5 will be the fourth MIUI update for the MIX 2S while the MIX 3 will get it as a third major update. It is appreciable of Xiaomi to support older flagships despite them going past the software support period.

Moving on, Zhang said that along with the MIX devices, the Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition will also get the MIUI 12.5 update. These devices got their last major MIUI 12 update in July and August 2020 respectively.

That said, Zhang hasn’t mentioned the 5G version of the Mi MIX 3 5G which got the direct update to MIUI 12 in September. But, we can expect it to be on the roster. What is uncertain is the update rollout date for the above-mentioned devices.

Zhang says that the update will come a little later after the company finishes the pending projects and ensures the test build is free of bugs. So, don’t expect the intermediate MIUI 12.5 on them anytime soon.

Xiaomi has been rolling out MIUI 12 stable update for the eligible devices for the past few weeks, in addition to releasing weekly beta builds. The company has been also updating its last year’s budget smartphones to Android 10 at the same time. Joining the list, Mi 8 becomes the first 2018 smartphone to get MIUI 12 stable update.

Like with every other Xiaomi/Redmi smartphone, the MIUI 12 stable update for Mi 8 is initially limited to China. Even in this region, the update is being seeded out in batches as only a handful of users have received it so far.

The update comes with build number V12.0.1.0.QEACNXM and weighs 763MB in size. Since this handset was the company’s flagship smartphone of 2018, we expect it to get all the new features of MIUI 12 including Super Wallpapers, AOD+, Dark Mode 2.0, and others.

That said, if this build receives positive feedback from the limited users who received it, the company will roll out it to more users. Only then, we can expect Xiaomi to push the update to the global versions of the device.

It is worth noting that MIUI 12 is the third MIUI update for the Mi 8 after MIUI 10 and MIUI 11. This handset launched with MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo. Currently, it runs Android 10 and will not receive any platform update but may get MIUI 13.

In May, Google had introduced the Android Q OS through its I/O 2019 conference. At that time, the search engine giant had added two Xiaomi phones such as Xiaomi Mi 9 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G phones to Android Q beta testing program. Later on, the Redmi K20 Pro was also included in the Android Q beta program. Today, the Chinese firm has confirmed the roadmap of Android Q beta testing schedule for as many as 11 smartphones through its MIUI forum.

Xiaomi will begin with the beta testing of Android Q update for 9 smartphones like Xiaomi Mi 9, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Redmi K20 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and Redmi K20 in the last quarter of this year. In the first quarter, the Chinese firm will carry out the Android Q beta testing for Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro smartphones.

As far as Android Q update for other Xiaomi devices, it will be rolled out after the best testing is successfully completed and all the bugs are ironed out. The Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro may receive the stable version of Android Q probably in the second quarter of 2020. Xiaomi is expected to launch the MIUI 11 update in the next months. Hopefully, the company may tag along MIUI 11 update along with Android Q update for its aforementioned smartphones.

Google is expected to introduce the final version of Android Q in August. AnTuTu benchmarking platform has released the list of the top 10 best performing Android phones in the global market for February 2019. The list has been compiled considering the average benchmarking score of each smartphone between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28 on the AnTuTu Benchmark v7 app. AnTuTu claims that it has tested at least 1,000 units of each model that have been included in the top 10 list.  The list is led by 8nm Exynos 9820 powered Samsung Galaxy S10+ with an average benchmarking score of 332,850.

The second spot goes to the Honor V20 that has recorded an average benchmarking score of 305,599. The Huawei Mate 20 X is placed on third spot with an AnTuTu score of 304,588. The fourth position goes to Huawei Mate 20 that has recorded a score of 302,985.  Sitting on the fifth spot is the Honor Magic 2 with 300,743. These Huawei and Honor phones are powered by 7nm Kirin 980 SoC.

The Xiaomi Mi MX 2S powered by Snapdragon 845 is on the sixth place with 298,007 AnTuTu score. The OnePlus 6, ASUS ROG Phone and Xiaomi Mi 8 have respectively bagged seventh, eighth and ninth positions. These phones have respectively scored 297,076, 297,037 and 297,001. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 slotted on the tenth position is yet another Snapdragon 845 powered Xiaomi phone in the list. With multiple SD855 fueled phones coming to the market, it is likely that smartphones driven by it may rank higher in the top 10 list of best performing Android phones in the coming months.

Today, Xiaomi’s co-founder and President of Xiaomi Group China, Wang Chuan, made an announcement through Weibo that the Xiaomi Mi 8 Fingerprint Edition, which was launched last year, will get the new Game Turbo technology that’s present in the company’s new flagship, Xiaomi Mi 9.

In the same post, he said that the introduction of this new feature will improve the phone’s gaming performance. The Mi 8 Fingerprint Edition will be available for purchase in China from tomorrow 10:00 AM in 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model through major online retailers for 2,499 Yuan, roughly $373.

Xiaomi claims that the Game Turbo technology drastically improves the performance as it dynamically adjusts the CPU frequency according to the game rendering load. With intelligent scheduling of CPU frequency, the CPU is operated at a lower frequency in a less loaded scenario which reduces system power consumption.

On the other hand, the company says that in the scenes with large renderings such as multiplayer team battles, more active system resources are invested, which effectively increases the frame rate of the picture and reduces frame dropping.

As the name itself suggests, the Mi 8 Fingerprint Edition is another variant of the Mi 8 which comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner. According to the company, its unlock speed is 29% higher and the success rate has improved by up to 8.8%.

Rest of the phone’s specifications remains the same as Mi 8. It features a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 2248 x 1080 resolution and a notch. There is a Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Alongside having an in-display fingerprint scanner, the phone also keeps the infrared face unlock of the regular Mi 8. Xiaomi’s president Lin Bin has disclosed that an update that will bring 4K 60fps video capture to the flagship Mi 8 is in the works. The exec hinted this on his Weibo page and even set a timeline when he added that the OTA will be pushed within 2 months. The Mi president was responding to a post shared by a Weibo user containing some samples of the Mi 8 camera’s Night Scene mode capture.

Xiaomi Mi 8 is the company’s 2018 Mi series model and according to official details, the device supports 4K 30fps, 1080p 30fps and 720p 30fps video capture but does not support 60fps. The Mi Mix 3 which has a similar dual camera setup supports The Xiaomi MIX 3 with the same dual camera module supports 4K 30fps, 4K 60fps, 1080p 30fps, 1080p 60fps, 720p 30fps video capture. Recall that the Mi 8 recently got an update which brought the night scene mode to the device. The Night Scene mode was first included on the Mi Mix 3. Xiaomi has today started releasing the MIUI 10 stable version update based on Android 9 Pie operating system for its Mi 8 series smartphones. Currently, the update is being rolled out to Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition while the users of Mi 8 UD will have to wait a bit longer.

As per the reports, with this update, the company is also introducing new features for improved camera experience, including Night Mode and 960fps slow-motion video recording. The short videos creating using 960fps slow-mo can be shared directly with friends and family via WeChat.

The Night Mode feature allows users to shoot clear images with as little noise as possible at night or in low-light areas. When you capture a photo in a low-light situation, it first detects the light and jitters through AI Smart Metering and automatically determines the exposure area. In each frame, it smartly selects 100 key feature points and fixes the color at the same time.

The MIUI 10 comes with several new features such as improved recent apps menu which is designed to better utilize the full-screen design on newer Xiaomi devices. Instead of arranging recent apps like a stack of cards, the app cards appear side by side on the screen, enabling you to see as much as six recent apps on the screen at one time.

Xiaomi says that the new MIUI makes use of artificial intelligence technology for “up to zero” loading times by studying your app usage behavior and anticipating actions. It also brings a new driving mode which relies on voice commands to avoid distractions.

Xiaomi‘s flagships for this year comprise of the Mix 2s and the Mi 8 models. The Mi 8 was released in May this year and went on sale in China in June. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun has now revealed that the company has sold over 6 million units of the Mi 8 since the models went on sale. Lei Jun also announced a 200 yuan ($28) price cut for the Mi 8 standard version in China to celebrate the milestone. This brings down the price to 2,499 yuan ($360).

This display also has 100 percent DCI-P3 wide color gamut, as well as the HDR technology. So besides having a huge level of detail, it has brilliant and realistic colors. Xiaomi Mi 8 takes the second place with its Super AMOLED Samsung panel which is HDR10-compliant as well, but it features just a Full HD+ resolution.

Specs & Software

With exactly the same hardware side, each of these devices achieves flagship-level performance. All of them boast the most powerful SoC in the Android market: the Snapdragon 845 by Qualcomm running at a max frequency of 2.8 GHz. But there are two things to note: Xiaomi Mi 8 does not have a micro SD slot, while Sharp Aquos Zero has no variants with 8 GB of RAM. So, at least in the most expensive variant. Asus Zenfone 5z wins the comparison on the paper with up to 8 GB RAM, up to 256 GB of internal storage and micro SD slot.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi 8 has the best camera department, there is definitely no doubt. The rear dual camera is composed of two 12 MP sensor: the main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and OIS and a secondary telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom supported. The detail it can capture is stunning, as well as photos in every light condition. Even the rear camera is very cool with a 20 MP resolution and f/2.0 aperture.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 8 is the affordable flagship with the biggest battery among these ones, and it is also the one with the longest battery life. It can always reach the end of the day with a moderate/intensive use, but this is not a battery phone so do not expect anything surprising.

Price

While we still do not know the listing price of the Sharp Aquos Zero, we can tell you that currently, you can get both Xiaomi Mi 8 and Asus Zenfone 5z for less than €400/$460. While is easy to find the base version of the Mi 8 for about €350-380/$400-430, you need a bit of luck to find the Zenfone 5z for €390 thanks to online street prices. With the actual situation, I would pick Xiaomi Mi 8 due to its impressive camera.

Xiaomi today announced that it’s flagship smartphone series — Xiaomi Mi 8 series, has crossed the sales mark of 6 million units. The devices in the Mi 8 series include Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Mi 8 SE, and the recently launched Mi 8 Lite.

Along with that, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has also announced that it’s slashing the prices of all four models of the Mi 8 flagship phone by 200 Yuan, which roughly converts to $29.

Xiaomi has joined fellow Chinese giant in mocking Apple over its latest iPhone models that were announced on Wednesday. The company dubbed “the Apple of China” takes on Apple in a subtle way, by mimicking the iterations of the new iPhone models in the naming of three different product bundles. The product bundles are named XR suite, XS suite and XS Max set and are priced exactly as the starting prices of the three new iPhone models in China.

The listing takes a direct swipe at the pricing of the three iPhone models; the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max. Apple released the pricing of the three models in China yesterday and they are not cheap! Apple products are extremely popular in China and are priced too high for many Chinese. We vividly recall the sad and unfortunate incident that occurred in 2012 when a 17-year-old boy from Anhui, one of China’s poorest provinces, sold his kidney for 22,000 yuan (£2,200) and used the money to buy an iPhone and iPad. As at then, the iPhone price started at 3,988 yuan (£400), and iPads began at 2,988 yuan (£300). The pricing of Apple products continued to skyrocket unabated. On a lighter side, Xiaomi is perhaps trying to prevent such alarming cases of teens selling off their kidneys to get an iPhone. And it is doing that by slapping us with some attractive and cool Mi gadgets we can get at the price of just one iPhone. As surreal as that sounds, it isn’t true. The Chinese company never made mention of that but this is just a marketing strategy to take on the competition. Kris Wu, also known as Wu Yifan, is a famous Chinese actor and singer who was a Xiaomi’s brand ambassador last year: back then, the company launched a special edition of the Mi Note 3 upper-midranger dedicated to him. Now, a photo shared on Weibo is showing Kris Wu with a Xiaomi phone never seen before in his left hand. According to the latest reports and leaks, the phone held by Wu Yifan is Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth, a cheaper version of the recently-launched Mi 8 with upper-midrange specs.

We can clearly see the handset in a cool gradient color with hues similar to the Aurora color variant of the Huawei P20 Pro. The color starts from a greenish blue on the upper part of the rear panel and it seems to become purple on the lower part. The alleged Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth seems to have a glass back and an aluminum frame. It is clearly noticeable that it is equipped with a dual camera setup placed horizontally, with a LED flash on its right side. The Mi 8 Youth was already certified in China by the known regulatory agency TENAA and its launch should be imminent in the country. But TENAA did not reveal many details about its specs: it only listed its memory configurations and colors.

From what TENAA suggested, Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth will be available in Space Gray, Gold, and Blue colors, to which you have to add this new gradient hue. Now Xiaomi has confirmed yet another event in China, to be held in the famous city of Chengdu. In case you don’t know, this city is famous for its giant pandas, thanks to the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base where tourist can get access and interact with these cute creatures.

The company released a new poster an hour ago via its weibo handle to confirm the event at Chengdu but failed to give out any specific details. However, the teaser poster kind of confirms that the event is for the Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth Edition. If you look closely at the picture, there’s a smartphone in the pot down below. We can see that the phone has dual cameras arranged horizontally, which is identical to the design of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth edition that we saw in TENAA images a couple of days back.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth edition is said to come with a 6.26-inch 2280 x 1080 pixel resolution display and Snapdragon 710 chipset inside. There should be 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage along with a 3350mAh battery on board. As for the cameras, there should be a 12+5MP sensor at the back and a large 24MP sensor up front for selfies.

From this point of view, Xiaomi Mi 8 should be superior as it features 400 mAh more of capacity. With just 3010 mAh, even though we still haven’t tested it, we believe that Meizu 16 will not go beyond a day of battery life with a moderately-stressed use.

For now, Meizu 16 has been launched in China only, where it has a starting price of about $395 which is very cheap. Xiaomi Mi 8 instead is available all around the world, and you can get it at different prices depending on the market. In China, it has been launched with a starting price of $421. It is very hard to pick a winner among these devices.

In my opinion, it is almost a draw, but I would choose the Mi 8 for its bigger battery and better support. However, if you can afford the Plus version of the Meizu 16, it is way better than the Mi 8 with its bigger display and bigger battery as well.

Along with its flagship Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE smartphones, Xiaomi had also announced Mi 8 Explorer Edition. While other models went on sale in May, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition was supposed to go on sale on July 24 but it was delayed by a week. Now, the company has revealed that the Mi 8 Explorer Edition with transparent back will be available from July 30.

After waiting for about two months, the Mi 8 Explorer Edition with translucent back will finally be available for purchase in China today for the first time. It is priced at 3,699 Yuan, which roughly converts to $545 and will be available at 07:30 PM in China.

The translucent glass back shows the internal components of the smartphone in a beautiful way. However, it was recently revealed that the translucent back isn’t showing the real internals. Also, instead of the regular fingerprint sensor, the device comes with an on-screen fingerprint reader that enables users to unlock the phone by a simple touch. It also supports Face ID for unlocking the device with facial recognition.

The smartphone features a 6.21-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a screen-to-body ratio of 83.8 percent and 1080 x 2248 pixels screen resolution with 402ppi pixel density. It comes with a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual-camera setup with 4-axis optical image stabilization and dual-pixel PDAF. There’s a 20-megapixel front-facing snapper for taking selfies.

The Mi 8 Explorer edition is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and comes in only one memory configuration — 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The phone runs on Android Oreo 8.1 with Xiaomi’s custom interface MIUI 10 and is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 4.0+ fast charging.
