Xiaomi took the wraps off the Mi 8 models only recently and the Mi 8SE turned out to be an extremely popular model among the trio. The popularity of the Mi 8SE may not be unconnected with the affordable price tag it adopts. There are indications that the Mi 8SE will launch in India but with a different moniker.

According to Beebom, the Mi 8SE will be launched in India as Mi 8i and the launch will allegedly take place in July. The tipster didn’t reveal any further details. However, we expect the Mi 8SE or Mi 8i to hit India with an unchanged specs lineup with the Chinese version.

As a reminder, the Mi 8SE is the first smartphone worldwide to launch with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset.  The device comes with a 5.88-inch AMOLED display with a notch and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition was launched alongside the Mi 8 and Mi 8SE and the smartphone turned out to be the high-end model among the lot. All three models come with almost similar designs but in the case of the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, it features a translucent glass back which shows the internal components in a beautiful way. The device equally comes with an in-display fingerprint technology and of course, a steep price tag. 

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition comes only with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage and it is priced at 3,699 Yuan (~$577). This is quite modest for a Snapdragon 845-powered flagship but the Mi 8SEis way cheaper at 1799 yuan (~$280) for the 4GB + 64GB version. Even the 6GB + 64GB version is still affordable at 1999 yuan(~$312). So, if you fancy the glass panel of the Explorer edition but won’t want to spend so much on a smartphone, this casing could be your saviour. A third-party protective casing has been spotted in China. The casing comes with a translucent glass back just like the Mi 8 Explorer and it fits the Mi 8SE perfectly. The casing cost just 29 yuan (~$4).

So, for just 29 yuan ( $4), you can pick up the casing and get to upgrade to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition. We don’t know about the material used for the casing or its weight but it looks like a laminated vinyl phone skin. We do hope this gets available outside China.

Xiaomi‘s latest flagship phone dubbed Mi 8 went on sale for the first time on June 5 and as expected, the device was sold out in a matter of minutes. The Mi 8SE which is a trimmed down variant powered by the new Snapdragon 710 will go on sale tomorrow and the device will likely get sold out rapidly than the Mi 8 because of its cheaper price. Fans shouldn’t get worried about when the device will meet with them. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun has revealed that the company is preparing up to 1 million stock of both the Mi 8 and Mi 8SE this June.

Of course, these 1 million units are meant to cater for the China market as the models are yet to be launched in other markets. Xiaomi is yet to even disclose when the device will launch globally. However, it’s likely that some of these units will be available outside China via popular e-retailers like Gearbest, Banggood, and others.

As a reminder, the Mi 8 comes with a Snapdragon 845 chipset and a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a notch at the display and 19:9 aspect ratio. The device also packs a dual camera setup at the rear as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Under the hood is a built-in 3400mAh (typ) battery with support for QC 4.0+ fast charging protocol but the charger it ships with is a standard 18W QC3.0 charger. The device also features a USB Type-C interface. The Mi 8SE is slightly different, packing a Snapdragon 710 premium mid-range chipset instead. The 8SE also comes with a few hardware variations but the design is similar to the Mi 8.

Xiaomi has officially announced its next-generation flagship models today in China. The Xiaomi Mi 8SE was launched alongside the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Exploration Edition. Basically, the Mi 8 SE is a mini version of the Mi 8, designed for users who are attracted to small screen phones.

Xiaomi Mi 8 SE Specifications & Features

The Mi 8 SE comes with a 5.88-inch AMOLED display which is equivalent to the traditional 5.2 inches smartphones. That is because it utilises the 18.7:9 aspect ratio.  The design is similar to that of the Mi 8 which includes a notch display design. The quality of the display is same as the Mi 8 but the screen resolution is 2244 x 1080 pixel while the device has an 86.12% screen to body ratio. The screen supports DCI-P3 colour gamut, has a 60000:1 contrast ratio and up to 600nits of brightness. The Mi 8SE also comes with a 2.5D curved glass body, with an enamel mirror finish. The device comes in four different colour options; Bright Red, Bright Blue, Gold, Dark Gray colours.

In terms of configuration, the Xiaomi 8SE debuts as the world’s first phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset. The SD 710 chipset is Qualcomm’s first chipset outside the flagship series built on the 10nm process. The Snapdragon 710 chipset includes two cores of Kryo 360 Cortex A75 that clocks at 2.2 GHz and six cores of Kryo 360 Cortex A55 that offers a processing speed of 1.7 GHz. The octa-core processor is coupled with Adreno 616 graphics that promises 35% better rendering of graphics. The chipset garnered more than 170,000 points on AnTuTu benchmark which places it above the Snapdragon 660 chipset. The processor is paired with 4GB RAM and there is a 6GB RAM. Both RAM versions come with 64GB storage which can be expanded. 

On the camera aspect, the Mi 8SE sports a 12MP + 5MP dual camera setup at the rear. The rear camera comes with a 1.4um pixel size on the main sensor as well as dual-core, 206 AI  scenes recognition, as well as portrait mode support. The front camera is a 20MP camera with self-timer which is still active even in low light condition. It can also capture bokeh shots using AI. In addition, there is AI scenes recognition. The Mi 8SE also comes with Bluetooth 5.0, X15 LTE baseband, 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi, while a 3120mAh battery keeps the light on. The handset is preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo that is skinned with the latest MIUI 10.

As for the price, Xiaomi Mi 8 SE is priced at 1799 yuan (~$280) for the 4GB + 64GB version while the 6GB + 64GB version come at just 200 yuan higher at 1999 yuan(~$312).

The Mi 7 was hitherto resonating in leaks and rumours right from last year until Xiaomi effectively killed it by revealing it is opting for Mi 8, skipping the number 7. The story got further complicated with talks of a Mi 8 SE variant which is expected to launch alongside the Mi 8. That rumour just got a boost with the spotting of the name on Xiaomi’s official mall (Mi Mall).

Xiaomi is expected to release the Mi 8 alongside the Mi Band 3 on May 31. The Mi 8E may also join the fray as it was recently listed on Mi Mall. The Mi 8SE was listed among models with 50 yuan discount coupon on Xiaomi’s official mall. It is listed along with the Mi 8 and both models are likely going to share more than just similar designs. In fact, we think the SE means Special Edition. If we are going to borrow a leaf from Apple, the Mi 8SE may likely come with a smaller display size while retaining the design of the Mi 8. Xiaomi has many of its products tailored to Apple products, including some of the features on the Mi 8. So, it won’t be much of a surprise if it pans out that way. The prospect looks good, especially if it will get slammed with a far cheaper price tag. After all, the iPhone SE is Apple’s cheapest iPhone model.

We don’t know if the hardware will be similar as well but there will likely be a few differences even if the device utilises a Snapdragon 845 chipset just like the Mi 8. May 31 is just a couple of days ahead. So, we won’t keep speculating for long.
