Xiaomi’s latest flagship, the Mi 9 has reportedly received a new update adding a couple of new features. The Mi 9 runs on the latest MIUI 10 based on Android 9.0 Pie and the update ushers in the MIUI V10.2.16.0.PFACNXM stable version. The major feature which the update brings in an optimisation of the water drop notch that sits on top of the display, housing the selfie camera.

From the update log shared by Xiaomi, the new version adds a feature that when enabled would make the shape of the water drop notch to become dynamic. That is, the shape will change to different patterns. Unfortunately, no detail was given on how this is going to work. But it was specified that the feature can be turned on and off as the user desires. The new update also brings fixes to several issues that affect system security and stability. It also fixes the problem of overlapping call times and notification icons during a call.

The Mi 9 is still relatively new as it was only launched last month.  The water drop notch on the Mi 9 isn’t really looking like an actual water droplet but is U shaped. Perhaps, the update will bring more interesting looking notch shapes. Since the model isn’t yet in the hands of many interested buyers, the feature won’t get many users right now but it sounds interesting. We expect the device would have this update on units that are yet to leave the factory.

Xiaomi did reveal last week that the flagship Mi 9 will be launched on February 20. Interestingly, this is the same date Samsung has scheduled to announce the Galaxy S10 series but Samsung isn’t the one grabbing the headline in the buildup to that date. Instead, Xiaomi is grabbing all attention with the barrage of official details that are being released by the Chinese giant since last week. To confirm that the Mi 9 will be available globally, Xiaomi has been releasing the details on Weibo and on its official Twitter page. The details continue to stream out, the latest coming out from Xiaomi’s co-founder and President Lin Bin. The detail is Mi 9’s new beauty features or capabilities. 

According to the details, Xiaomi has added a new algorithm to the Mi 9’s beauty feature. This algorithm will bring several innovative beauty features such as age detection especially the ability to identify babies and to customize the baby’s light beauty so that the skin looks exactly like that of a baby when a group photo of parent and children are taken. Further, the Mi 9 beauty feature will pan out based on different genders. So, male and females can take pictures together without any party getting over-exposed.

In addition, Lin Bin disclosed that the Mi 9 will come with a smart slimming feature specially designed for girls. Now, girls can enhance their photos to bring out that figure 8 shape even when they don’t have one. The feature incorporates smart face-lifting, waist, breast enhancement, hip lifting, stovepipe, calf pulling, and different skinny and posture according to different leg types and postures.

Since the announcement of the February 20 launch date for the flagship Mi 9, the tech space has been buzzing with one detail or the other popping up. We recently saw the real-life image of the Mi 9 pop up online as well as the protective case the company will be releasing alongside the phone. A Xiaomi official has now shared a camera sample shot by the Mi 9.

As already established by several leaks, the Mi 9 is expected to feature a triple rear camera setup. The main camera will have a mammoth 48MP sensor while the secondary camera will be a 12MP sensor. The third sensor will likely be a ToF camera. The camera sample can’t be said to be out of this world but the executive did state that the purpose of sharing the sample is for us to get a look at the powerful resolution of the rear camera. Unfortunate, Weibo has done some compression but the picture is well pixelated such that it doesn’t become blurry when zoomed in, thanks to the 48MP main sensor.

Xiaomi has already featured a 48MP sensor on the Redmi Note 7 released recently. But instead of a Samsung ISOCELL GM1 Ultra Clear sensor, the main sensor will likely be the SonyIMX600 sensor used in the Huawei P/Mate series flagship and having a higher super-sensing area. The ultra-high pixels provide more detailed performance as can be seen from the camera sample above. We’ll have to wait for more samples captured under varying lighting conditions to know the full prowess of the Mi 9 triple rear cameras.
