Design

In order to make their budget phones very affordable, both Samsung and Realme decided to make the Galaxy A51 and the Realme 5 Pro with a cheap plastic body. Despite coming with cheap materials, keep in mind that Realme 5 Pro is splash resistant. But the device offering the best design and build quality is the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite, also known as the Xiaomi Mi CC9 in China. Unlike most of the budget phones, it comes with both a glass back and an aluminum frame for a premium touch & feel. Further, its rear side shows suggestive light effects depending on the viewing angle.

Display

Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is superior even if we talk about the display quality. It is the only HDR-compliant device from this trio, which means it provides a richer image quality. Further, it has a higher peak brightness with up to 600 nits. It is also an AMOLED panel. The silver medal goes to the Samsung Galaxy A51 equipped with a Super AMOLED display, while Realme 5 Pro loses the comparison as it comes with a classic IPS panel, but it is not disappointing thanks to its Full HD+ resolution.

Specs & Software

In a lot of regions, if you want the most affordable smartphone with the highest performance, you have to choose the Realme 5 Pro. The mid-ranger from Oppo’s sub-brand is available for less than €200 and it offers an amazing Snapdragon 712 chipset, which is an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 710 found on the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite. The Mi 9 Lite offers a fast UFS 2.1 internal storage, but Realme 5 Pro has more RAM: up to 8 GB in its most expensive version, while both Samsung Galaxy A51 and Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite stops at 6 GB. Despite it is less impressive in terms of performance, Samsung Galaxy A51 is the only with Android 10 out of the box since it is a more recent handset.

Camera

The differences in photo quality between Samsung Galaxy A51, Realme 5 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite are not excessive. Due to its definitely better secondary sensors, I personally prefer the quad rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy A51. It is even great at shooting selfies, but Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite has a better selfie snapper.

Battery

With these three phones, you get more or less the same battery capacity and, given that we still did not test the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy A51, we can not provide you a definitive opinion. Between Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite and Realme 5 Pro, the former offers a slightly longer battery life in most of the scenarios.

Price

Samsung still did not announce the price of the Galaxy A51. You can get the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite globally for less than €250/$279, while Realme 5 Pro has a €199/$222 global listing price (but street prices are lower). Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is a more complete device than its rivals due to its better build quality and display, but it costs definitely more than Realme 5 Pro, even though the 5 Pro provides higher performance.

Now, users of the Mi CC9 have reported that their models have started receiving OTA updates for the MIUI 11.3.1.0 stable version. The update package comes with a large 728MB size and so it is advised that updating should be done over a WiFi connection. We couldn’t verify from the changelog (in Chinese) if this new update is based on Android 9 or 10. However, considering the premium midrange rating of the Mi CC9, we want to believe it is Android 10-based.

MIUI 11 brings a whole lot of new features to the table. The new features include new icons for the UI which is a traditional feature of successive MIUI versions. The update also brings smoother animations, Ultra Power Saving Mode as well as Kids Mode which provides a safe digital environment for kids by running only apps whitelisted by their parent or guardian. MIUI 11 equally tracks the owner’s smartphone usage time in order to help avoid spending too much time. Other features include earthquake alerts, the ability to cast to an external display with the added feature of continuous casting even when the display is turned off to save battery.

As a reminder, the Mi CC9 was first announced in July this year alongside the Mi CC9e, Mi CC9 Meizu custom edition. The device was later launched as the Mi 9 Lite outside China and so we expect a swift update for the global version. The phone packs a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a 91% screen ratio. Powering the model is a Snapdragon 710 chipset. The Mi CC9 utilises an under-display fingerprint sensor. It equally packs NFC, infrared remote control and Hi-Res HD audio.

Design

The design and the build quality are not the strong points of the Realme X2. If we consider all the devices of this comparison, it is the only with a plastic frame, while both the Honor 20 Lite and Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite come with an aluminum frame besides their glass backs. Between Honor 20 Lite and Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite, the one I prefer is the latter since it comes with a more suggestive glass back thanks to its light effects. Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite has even a thinner chin making it even more attractive. Last but not least, its glass back is covered by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5.

Display

Besides winning the design comparison, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is superior even if we talk about displays. First of all, it supports the HDR technology which allows watching multimedia content with richer video quality. Further, it has a very high peak brightness for its AMOLED panel. Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition has high DCI-P3 coverage, but I personally prefer the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite on the paper, Realme X2 has a classic AMOLED display which lacks the support to HDR and a wide DCI-P3 coverage, so it loses the comparison again.

Hardware/Software

Finally, Realme X2 neutralizes its rivals. All thanks to its amazing Snapdragon 730G: the best midrange-class processor by Qualcomm. If you want a better Qualcomm chipset, you must go for the Snapdragon 8xx flagship series. The Snapdragon 730G is a chipset meant especially for gamers and it provides high graphics performance as well as low energy consumption. Another advantage of the Realme X2 is its higher-end memory configuration: it sports up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage, while Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite and Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition stop at 128 GB. Between Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite and Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition, the former wins since it has a more powerful chipset. Android 9 Pie is installed out of the box in each case.

Camera

The presence of a quad camera with a 64 MP main sensor and a dedicated macro camera makes the Realme X2 a better camera phone than both its opponents. It even comes with a great 32 MP selfie camera. The second place goes to the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite which sports a triple camera setup and another 32 MP selfie camera.

Battery

In each case, you get a 4000 mAh battery. What changes the battery life is the efficiency of the components. Given that Realme X2 is equipped with a chipset built at just 7 nm, it should provide a longer battery life. And it even has a faster charging technology: it charges up to 67 percent in just 30 minutes.

Price

Realme X2 starts from less than €250/$280 in China, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite costs less than €230/$255, and Honor 20 Lite Youth Edition starts from less than €180/$200. Overall Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is a more complete phone since it has a premium build quality, an amazing display, and a well balanced specs sheet. But Realme X2 provides higher performance and cameras. Honor 20 Lite is way more affordable, but it is overall inferior.

But does it really have flagship-class features and components? Is it really a flagship killer when it comes to performance or it is still far from high-end devices? Does it have a higher value for money than affordable flagships? We decided to answer all of these questions by comparing it to one of the latest and most amazing affordable flagships in China: the Oppo Reno Ace. Unlike the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it is a real high-end phone, but is it worth spending more for it? Let’s find it out together.

Design

There is no doubt about the fact that Oppo Reno Ace has a more premium design than Redmi Note 8 Pro. Indeed, it sports a glass back paired with an aluminum frame, it has a cleaner glass back thanks to the in-display fingerprint scanner, and it is even more compact. It should also be a more resistant phone due to both its metal frame and the Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The Oppo Reno Ace is even more beautiful, at least according to my tastes.

Display

The display of the Oppo Reno Ace is infinitely superior to the one of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. First of all, it is an AMOLED screen unlike the IPS panel of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Further, it supports both full DCI-P3 coverage and a higher 90 Hz refresh ratio, while Redmi Note 8 Pro does not. It also comes with a slightly taller aspect ratio and stereo speakers which improve multimedia and gaming experience. Given that it sports an AMOLED panel, Oppo Reno Ace also comes with an in-display fingerprint reader, while the biometric sensor of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is placed on the back. Both Oppo Reno Ace and Redmi Note 8 Pro support HDR.

Specs & Software

Despite it is just a midrange smartphone, Redmi Note 8 Pro sports a high-end SoC. There is no midrange chipset that can achieve the same graphics performance as the MediaTek Helio G90T. That is why it is a perfect chipset for gaming. But is it able to reach the flagship Snapdragon 855+ which is currently the best Qualcomm’s chipset? The short answer is no. The long answer is: even though it has high-end CPU and GPU performance, Helio G90T is far from being a top-tier chipset. And it even has a high energy consumption, given that it is built at 12 nm while most of the current flagship chipsets are built at 7 nm. Another component making the Oppo Reno Ace better than Redmi Note 8 Pro in every configuration is the UFS 3.0 internal storage, while Redmi Note 8 Pro has UFS 2.1 storage. Last but not least, Oppo Reno Ace is available with up to 12 GB of RAM, while Redmi Note 8 Pro stops at 8 GB.

Camera

Redmi Note 8 Pro has a quad camera with a higher resolution for the main sensor, but this does not mean it is a better camera phone. Oppo Reno Ace has a better 48 MP sensor with a brighter aperture and even OIS in its dual camera. Unlike the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the Oppo Reno Ace has an ultrawide lens which is currently one of the most wanted camera features. So, Oppo Reno Ace wins even when it comes to cameras.

Battery

Redmi Note 8 Pro has a way bigger battery than Oppo Reno Ace, but it does not mean that it always provides a longer battery life. With an intensive usage, Oppo Reno Ace is superior because it has more efficient components. Further, the Oppo Reno Ace has a lot faster charging technology: with its 65W SuperVOOC Flash Charge, it can fully charge in just 30 minutes.

Price

In China, Redmi Note 8 Pro starts from just €177/$200, while Oppo Reno Ace starts from about €380/$425. Oppo Reno Ace is a superior phone in almost every aspect, but if you can not afford a so expensive device, Redmi Note 8 Pro is the best mid-ranger you can buy if you are looking for the best performance and long battery life.

It is not a case if sub-brands are literally leading the sales of giants like Xiaomi and Oppo. These companies are currently the ones with the highest success in the affordable segment and they released a lot of devices in the global market this year. In the last days, Oppo came up with the Realme X2 and the Oppo Reno 2Z for the global market, while Xiaomi launched the Mi 9 Lite that is the international version of the Mi CC9. Given that they are among the most interesting mid-rangers which hitten the shelves in this period and among the best value for money phones, we decided to compare their specifications.

Design

The Oppo Reno 2Z and the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite boast the most impressive design and build quality. Both have a glass back and an aluminum frame, but they differ in their front side. The former has a notch-less display thanks to a motorized pop-up camera mechanism, while the latter has a classic waterdrop notch. Both have an optical under-display fingerprint scanner, but their rear sides are very different. While the Oppo Reno 2Z has a more original design scheme, the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is very attractive thanks to its light effects. Realme X2 has a more traditional design and its glass back is paired with a plastic frame. Which one do you prefer?

Display

If display quality is one of your main concerns, then Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is the most correct option for your needs. It is not just a midrange phone with a Super AMOLED screen, but it also supports the HDR standard for improved image quality. It even comes with very high brightness. Oppo Reno2 Z is notch-less and its display is even bigger, but it does not provide the same quality. Even Realme X2 can not reach the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite.

Hardware/Software

While the design and the display of the Realme X2 do not attract me particularly, I define its hardware department simply amazing, especially if you consider the price tag of this phone. It has a gaming-centric high-end Snapdragon 730G chipset which delivers very high CPU and GPU performance while its energy consumption is always very limited thanks to the 8 nm production process. Hardware and performance are the strongest points of the Realme X2 and if you are an advanced user you should give it a shot.

Camera

If you are looking for the best camera experience, then you should go for the Oppo Reno2 Z. It has a very nice 48 MP main sensor with a bright focal aperture contained in a quad camera module which includes even an ultrawide sensor, a depth sensor, and a monochromatic sensor to improve photo quality and features. The Oppo Reno2 Z even features a front-facing LED flash. With its 64 MP quad camera, Realme X2 is undoubtedly more interesting than the Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite, especially because it boasts a dedicated macro camera.

Battery

Realme X2, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite, and Oppo Reno2 Z have more or less the same battery capacity. We still did not test all of them, but on the paper Realme X2 has a more efficient SoC, that is why it should last more in the most demanding scenarios. Further, it has a faster charging technology which is able to charge the phone up to 67 percent in just 30 minutes.

Price

Realme X2 hitten the European market with a €300/$335 price in the 8/128 GB configuration, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite costs about €260/$290 in the 6/64 GB configuration, and Oppo Reno 2Z 8/256 GB costs €349/$390. At the end of the day, Realme X2 is more attractive due to its higher value for money, higher performance, more efficiency, and pretty nice cameras. But I think the most balanced phone is the Oppo Reno2 Z: despite it comes with a less efficient SoC, it has a very interesting camera setup, awesome design and builds quality, and more. However, Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite is not far and it may be more suitable for some kinds of users. It offers a better display, a more efficient SoC than Reno2 Z, a more advanced UI, and even great selfies.

Fresh information shared by a tipster from China claims that the company is working may announce a new CC9 phone on Oct. 24. The handset could be dubbed as Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro and it is expected to come equipped with a 108-megapixel camera.

The tipster has further added that the alleged Mi CC9 Pro could be fueled by Snapdragon 730G mobile platform. There is no other information available on the specifications of the Mi CC9 Pro.

Being a Pro version of the Mi CC9, the handset may sport an identical design. Also, the smartphone may borrow many of its specs from the Mi CC9. Hence, it is likely to arrive with a waterdrop notch display couple with in-screen fingerprint reader. Probably, it could be running on the latest MIUI 11 based Android 9 Pie OS. Since the rumored Mi CC9 Pro smartphone is expected to debut on Oct. 24, more information on it is expected to surface in the coming days.

A new leak has unmasked the key specifications and real pictures of the Mi 9 Lite flaunting the front and rear design. As for the specifications, the mobile phone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset which some may find disappointing considering the existence of the better Snapdragon 712 SoC.
The device will get a 4030mAh battery with an 18W fast charger inside the box. The Mi 9 Lite will run MUI 10 based on Android 9.0. There is no physical fingerprint sensor at the rear and that is because the device utilises an on-screen fingerprint sensor.
