The compact flagship category has been largely ignored by companies and consumers for the past 3 years, especially on the Android camp. However, tides are changing ever since Apple restarted the compact smartphone trend with its iPhone 12 Mini last year and continued it on with the iPhone 13 Mini in 2021. Xiaomi is looking to compete in the compact flagship category as well, as new promo images confirm the Xiaomi 12 to be the company’s first compact flagship in years since the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE.

Popular benchmarking website, Antutu recently shared the official promo images of the Xiaomi Mi 12 series on its Weibo, stating that the Xiaomi 12 series is coming in two size options, both options are equally deserved to be called a flagship in the smartphone space. 

Antutu announces in its post that the Xiaomi 12 is the smaller and more compact flagship, however, it does not skimp on the essentials of being a flagship smartphone, it aims to deliver the flagship smartphone experience with excellent one-handed usage. The Xiaomi 12 Pro, on the other hand, is the big brother which aims to provide the ultimate multimedia experience with its bigger screen, bigger battery, and larger sound system.

As revealed earlier this week, the Xiaomi 12 series will be launching on Dec. 28 at 19:30 CST and from what the leaks have gathered so far, there will be three models in the lineup, namely the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12X. 

Under the hood, The Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro are to be equipped with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, whereas listings reveal the Xiaomi 12X is equipped with the Snapdragon 870. As for the charging speeds, the Xiaomi 12 and 12X are expected to support 67W fast charging, while the Xiaomi 12 Pro may offer 120W rapid charging. Coming to the software, the Xiaomi 12 series will come preinstalled with Android 12 and MIUI 13.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is one of those super popular devices that sold in the millions. It was launched back in August 2019 running Android Pie layered with MIUI 10 atop. It has since been updated to Android 10 and has been awaiting Android 11. To recall, the phone first got a taste of Android 11 back in early 2021 when it rolled out in China.

However, no Android 11 rolled out in regions like India and Redmi Note 8 users therein have been waiting on the same for over 9 months now. That has changed now though with the release of build 12.0.1.0.RCOINXM that carries a size of 2.2GB. The update has only rolled out to those part of the Mi Pilot Testers program currently, meaning regular users may still have to wait for a few more days.

In terms of features, there’s barely anything new considering that the ROM is still based on MIUI 12. Yes, you heard that right – MIUI 13 is set to be launched by the end of this year but the Redmi Note 8 is yet to get a taste of MIUI 12.5. The device is still eligible for MIUI 13 though, so perhaps, Xiaomi plans to upgrade the device directly to the same.

Tipster Abhishek Yadav claims that the Android 11 update for the device is laggy, but it does add stuff like the October security patch, support for RAM extension, navigation pill, and horizontal recents arrangement.

But now that Android 11 is finally here, it’s time for some bad news. Xiaomi typically updates its budget devices with at least three MIUI versions and two Android versions, so the Redmi Note 8 is nearing its end of life. Daily Chinese beta builds have already stopped for it along with the Xiaomi Mi 9, Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 Lite (Mi CC9), Mi 9 Pro 5G, Redmi K20 (Mi 9T), Redmi K20 Pro (Mi 9T Pro), and Redmi Note 8 Pro (via Xiaomiui). This means that MIUI 13 will be the last major update for these devices.

Back in August, Xiaomi rolled out the MIUI 12 stable update to the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE a few months after the official announcement. Similarly, exactly three months later, it seems to be bringing the MIUI 12.5 to the device in China.

A new update with firmware version vI2.5.1.0.RFBCNXM is rolling out to the users of Xiaomi Mi 9 SE in China. The update weighs about 2.4GB in size and brings the latest stable MIUI 12.5 based on Android 11 and March 2021 security patch to the device.

That said, the update brings the latest MIUI 12.5 features like the UI Design improvements, more Super wallpapers, improved privacy, haptics, MIUI+, uninstallable built-in apps, and more. Xiaomi launched this incremental UI back in December 2020.

A few weeks later, it put out a list of eligible devices to get the update in the first batch of rollout in China. Accordingly, the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is among the first devices to get a stable update in the country. And expect more devices to get it in the coming days.

Anyway, the update is currently in the Stable Beta recovery stage so it will be rolled out to a few and later to everyone after ensuring there are no bugs. Not just the Chinese version, the global version for the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is also eligible for the Android 11 update.

It is worth noting that the Mi 9 SE launched with Android 9 Pie and had got a major update of Android 10 already. In terms of UI, the Mi 9 SE debuted with older MIUI 10 and has already got two major UI updates(incl. MIUI 11). Hence, this could be the last update for the device.

The hardware comparison leaves no doubts: Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is stronger thanks to its better Snapdragon 712 chipset. Further, unlike its two opponents, it features 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage. Google Pixel 3a and Sony Xperia Ace are only available in the 4/64 GB configuration. On the other hand, the Google Pixel 3a comes with stock Android and, given that it is a Google phone, it is more secure and it will be updated faster and in a more constant way with the latest major Android versions and security patches. That is why Pixel 3a is the perfect phone for developers.

Camera

Google Pixel 3a borrows its rear camera sensor from the vanilla Pixel 3 and this means that it provides a flagship-class camera experience. Despite it has just a single camera on its rear side, it wins the camera comparison thanks to a higher-end sensor and a more advanced algorithm, as well as optical stabilization and astonishing performances in low-light conditions. Right after, we got the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE with its versatile triple camera including a 48 MP high-end sensor, a telephoto lens, and an ultrawide sensor.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is not so incredible when it comes to battery life, while Google Pixel 3a and Sony Xperia Ace are much better thanks to their better software optimization, with just marginal differences in most of the scenarios. Overall, Google Pixel 3a is the most convincing one and it also features a very fast charging technology.

Price

While Google Pixel 3a starts from €400/$443 and Sony Xperia Ace costs €396/$440, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE carries a starting price of just €280/$310. At the end of the day, I would personally go for the Google Pixel 3a because of its flagship-class camera, better Android experience, but Xiaomi Mi 9 SE has a higher value for money. You should choose the Sony Xperia Ace only if you want a real compact phone with a very small size, otherwise, its rivals are better devices in terms of specifications and potentialities.

China-based smartphone maker Xiaomi recently started rolling out a new over-the-air (OTA) update for the Mi 9 SE (Full Specs). However, some users have now started complaining that after installing the update, their smartphone is getting bricked.

The firmware in question is the MIUI 10.3.1.0 to EEA, which is an update for the European market. Reports indicate that the grey import handsets which come with global ROM are not affected and only those that are purchased from Xiaomi’s official retailers in Europe are facing this issue.

Currently, there’s no information available regarding what portion of the devices are getting affected by this issue and if there’s a way to get around. So, it’s advisable to avoid installing the new update it all together until Xiaomi addresses the issue. It has been around four days since the first such incident occurred, which was reported on Xiaomi‘s community forum.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE comes with a 5.97-inch AMOLED display having 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection on top. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 SoC coupled with 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

In terms of the camera configuration, on the back, the smartphone features a triple camera module, which consists of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor.

On the front side, there’s a single 20-megapixel camera for taking selfies and video calling. The phone runs Android 9.0 Pie operating system with the company’s own MIUI V10 custom UI on top and is powered by a 2070mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.

In May, Google had introduced the Android Q OS through its I/O 2019 conference. At that time, the search engine giant had added two Xiaomi phones such as Xiaomi Mi 9 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G phones to Android Q beta testing program. Later on, the Redmi K20 Pro was also included in the Android Q beta program. Today, the Chinese firm has confirmed the roadmap of Android Q beta testing schedule for as many as 11 smartphones through its MIUI forum.

Xiaomi will begin with the beta testing of Android Q update for 9 smartphones like Xiaomi Mi 9, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Redmi K20 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and Redmi K20 in the last quarter of this year. In the first quarter, the Chinese firm will carry out the Android Q beta testing for Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro smartphones.

As far as Android Q update for other Xiaomi devices, it will be rolled out after the best testing is successfully completed and all the bugs are ironed out. The Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro may receive the stable version of Android Q probably in the second quarter of 2020. Xiaomi is expected to launch the MIUI 11 update in the next months. Hopefully, the company may tag along MIUI 11 update along with Android Q update for its aforementioned smartphones.

Google is expected to introduce the final version of Android Q in August. Unfortunately, they are way inferior to flagship displays, but they still provide very nice performances. Meizu 16Xs should be less accurate when it comes to color reproduction, but it still comes with a premium screen. In each case, you get a fast in-display fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

If speed is your priority, go for the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE without thinking twice. It is powered by a better processor: the Snapdragon 730 that can be defined as an important upgrade of the Snapdragon 710. And it is paired with 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage. It has a better GPU as well as a better CPU than both the Snapdragon 675 and the Snapdragon 712 found on the Meizu 16Xs and the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE. Camera

Besides its amazing hardware side, the Redmi K20 also delivers the best camera department. Its rear setup is composed of a 48 MP main sensor, a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and a 13 MP ultrawide lens. It is able to record 4K videos at 30 fps and 1080p super slow motion videos at 960 fps. Further, it even has a pretty nice 20 MP selfie camera. Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is almost at the same level and you will hardly notice the differences in photo quality, while Meizu 16Xs should be noticeably inferior. However, we still did not test this one, so you have to wait for our final verdict if you want a definitive opinion.

Battery

The weakest point of the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is the battery: just 3070 mAh for a 2019 high-end device is disappointing. That is not the same with the Redmi K20 and Meizu 16Xs as both come with a great 4000 mAh battery which lasts a full day.

Price

Meizu 16Xs starts from €220/$245, Redmi K20 carries a €260/$290 price tag, and Xiaomi Mi 9 SE starts from €300/$335. The winner of the comparison is the Redmi K20 due to its bigger battery, awesome cameras, and perfect hardware department.

Xiaomi India has released a new teaser for an upcoming phone through its community forum. The teaser image seems to feature triple, dual and single camera sensors. The Chinese firm could be teasing an upcoming smartphone that may feature triple rear cameras. Probably, the company could be gearing up to launch its next Android One devices named Xiaomi Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite.

Interestingly, Xiaomi India Managing Director and Global VP Manu Kumar Jain has confirmed through a new tweet that the company will be making some amazing announcements soon. Also, the new devices could be exclusively available through Flipkart.

Apart from Xiaomi Mi A3, the company is also rumored to be working on a global release of Xiaomi Mi 9 SE upper mid-range phone. The smartphone is equipped with triple rear cameras. Hence, there is a possibility that the company could be teasing the arrival of Mi 9 SE in India.

Jain had hinted in the previous month that the company’s next phone will be fueled by Snapdragon 7XX SoC. Probably, the Xiaomi Mi A3 could be arriving with Snapdragon 710, 712 or 730 SoC. A recent leak by XDA Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman had claimed revealed that upcoming Android One devices that are codenamed as “Bamboo_sprout” and “Cosmos_sprout” could be Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite smartphones. The handset with “Pyxis” codename could be MIUI version of the “Bamboo_sprout” and “Cosmos_sprout” phones. He claimed that all three phones are expected to be fueled by Snapdragon 7XX series SoC which could be SD710 or SD712 SoC.

It is speculated that the Mi A3 will be equipped with a triple camera module that will include a 48-megapixel primary sensor, a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is equipped with Snapdragon 712 mobile platform. It may so happen that instead of launching multiple phone with similar specs, the company may release the Mi 9 SE as Mi A3 with stock version of Android. It is advisable to wait for further updates from the company to know more about the upcoming phones.

On the other hand, Google Pixel 3a is a better handset for music lovers as it features stereo speakers and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Specs & Software

Both Google Pixel 3a and Xiaomi Mi 9 SE are equipped with an upper-midrange hardware department, but Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is superior. Indeed, it has a more powerful chipset (Snapdragon 712 vs Snapdragon 670) boasting a better GPU (so better graphics performance), as well as a higher amount of RAM (6 GB) and internal storage (128 GB) in its most expensive variant. Last but not least, it has expandable storage. Google Pixel 3a is better only when it comes to software, as its stock Android version will get updated quicker by Google and will make it a safer device.

Camera

On the camera side, there is a very hard battle. Battery

Unfortunately, we still had no chance to test the battery life of the Google Pixel 3a. And given that it comes with more or less the same capacity of the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, it is hard to understand which one will last more on a single charge. If we base on previous Google device, Pixel 3a might be optimized better and it may last more in most of the scenarios, but we can not give a verdict right now.

Price

In the global market, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE has a starting price tag of €350/$392, while Google Pixel 3a starts from €399/$399. Whatever you choose it will be a very good choice, but the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is my favorite one due to its more beautiful aesthetics, higher-end hardware, UD fingerprint scanner, and micro SD support.

Marking smartphones is as important as making good smartphones. However, marking isn’t as easy job, especially you are in a market like smartphones which is heavily crowded. To stand out from the crowd, the companies try to make witty remarks and ads.

Xiaomi tried to do the same for the marketing of its Mi 9 SE smartphone by posting a video on Twitter. However, instead of getting people interested in the smartphone, the move backfired because of the content. Realizing this, the company soon took down the ad.

The video shows a couple in bed and the man is using his smartphone. He is shown responding to late-night, flirty messages from another woman on Facebook Messenger. He subsequently gets caught. In a text accompanying the video, the company implies that he’d have gotten away with this if he’d been using a Mi 9 SE.

This was posted by the company’s Xiaomi Malaysia Twitter account and as said, the advertisement has now been deleted by the company. This isn’t the first time that the company’s attempt has backfired.

Last year, after launching the Mi A1 Android One smartphone, Xiaomi ran a poll on Twitter asking its followers whether they preferred MIUI or Android One. But due to a result deemed unsatisfactory by Xiaomi, the tweet was removed by the company.

As for the Mi 9 SE, the smartphone comes with a 5.97-inch AMOLED display having 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 5. The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 SoC coupled with 6GB RAM and 64/128GB internal storage.

On the back, the smartphone feature a triple camera module – a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide sensor, and an 8MP telephoto sensor. A single 20 MP camera is present on the front side for selfies and video calling.

It is quite disappointing that Xiaomi is yet to get it right with the availability of stock for its latest flagship models. The Chinese tech giant has made several efforts to ramp up production and those efforts may have started yielding results. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun hinted today that the company has accelerated production of the Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE models and was able to achieve over 1.5 million units shipping out of the production lines as at the end of March.

Lei Jun further stated that the company will strive to further increase its production capacity and make the phone available soon. Lei had earlier hinted that the Mi 9 product encountered some difficulties in the early part of March but the company has been able to resolve the issues by the middle of March. He acknowledged the importance of satisfying customers’ demands by making stock available.

Xiaomi seems to have learned a great deal from its earlier misadventure when it soared to the top 5 phone maker ranking but the growth was stifled by a scarcity of its products. Just to give you an idea, it is more or less at the same level as the Snapdragon 821 which was the best Qualcomm’s chipset in 2016. Samsung Galaxy A70 takes the second place with its octa-core Snapdragon 670 chipset paired with up to 8 GB of RAM, while Vivo V15 has a not so impressive Helio P70 by MediaTek which still does it job supported by 6 GB of RAM.

These phones come with a particular focus on cameras. Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is the most impressive one with a 48 MP main sensor, a 13 MP ultrawide lens and even a third telephoto lens. But someone may prefer the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE due to its clean and reflective glass back, as it comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner and wonderful gradient colors. Even Huawei P30 Lite is all but an ugly phone with its amazing glass back and a high screen-to-body ratio. But the punch-hole display makes me go for the Nokia X71.

Nokia X71 and Huawei P30 Lite are more or less at the same level when it comes to the display quality, but the Huawei P30 Lite comes with a smaller display that may be less comfortable for productivity but it is also easier to use with one hand.

Besides being the clear winner of this comparison, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE is also one of the most performing midrange smartphones in the whole market. It is equipped with the best midrange chipset by Qualcomm, which is also the best San Diego giant’s chipset if we exclude the 800 series. That is the reason why Xiaomi Mi 9 SE will be faster and smoother than Nokia X71 and Huawei P30 Lite in most of the scenarios, including gaming. I want to give the second place to the Nokia X71 because, even though the Snapdragon 660 chipset is more or less at the same level as the Kirin 710, it comes with a better GPU. Further, Nokia X71 comes with a stock Android version which is lighter than Huawei’s and Xiaomi’s customized user interfaces.

Unfortunately, we still did not test the impressive triple camera of the Nokia X71 equipped with Carl Zeiss lenses, but on the paper, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE seems to be a most convincing camera phone. It boasts a main 48 MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, a 13 MP ultrawide sensor and a telephoto lens for optical zoom. Nokia X71 is not so different as it comes with a similar setup but it has a lower resolution for the ultrawide lens, as well as a lower resolution for the front camera (16 MP vs 20 MP). Huawei P30 Lite may be a better phone for selfies given its whopping 32 MP front camera, but its rear camera should be inferior to both Xiaomi Mi 9 SE and Nokia X71.

Battery

With its bigger 3500 mAh battery, Nokia X71 should be able to last more. Huawei P30 Lite stops at the average capacity of 3340 mAh, while Xiaomi Mi 9 SE’s battery is definitely its weakest point with just 3070 mAh.

Xiaomi Mi 9 is retailing throughout the world in selected countries. In Europe, it is available for €449, while in India it will start retailing for INR 35990 (expected), and in some other countries with a similar price tag.

As according to official Mi Store in China, the Mi 9 delivery information is changed to “within a week” timeframe from the earlier three weeks time period. In China, the 6GB+128GB is available for 2999 Yuan(~$446), 8GB+128GB version for 3299 Yuan(~$490) and 8GB+256 GB is going for 3699 Yuan(~$550).

Additionally, Xiaomi Mi 9 features an impressive 6.4 inch AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC coupled with Adreno 630 graphical processing unit. Further, it is available in three different storage variants – 6GB+128GB, 8GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB. It comes with Android 9.0 Pie based MIUI 10 on board for smooth smartphone functioning.

Xiaomi has partnered with LINE FRIENDS, a global character brand to introduce Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Brown Bear Limited Edition smartphone. The sales of the special edition phone will begin on April 9 in China.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Brown Bear Limited Edition handset that features a logo of brown bear’s face on its rear comes in a special box package. It includes a 10,000mah limited edition power bank worth 99 Yuan (~$15), a protective shell brown bear making different poses all over it, a collection certificate and some stickers.

The entire suit carries a price tag of 2,499 Yuan (~$372). Xiaomi Mall will begin its sales from April 9. The smartphone runs on a modified version of MIUI 10 that is customized with Brown Bear elements. The Chinese manufacturer also announced 20-inch Sally Mi suitcase limited edition in partnership with LINE FRIENDS with a price tag of 399 Yuan (~$60).

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Specifications

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE was announced alongside Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 Explorer Edition flagship phones in February. The Mi 9 SE comes with a 5.97-inch Super AMOLED display that produces full HD+ resolution and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Gorilla Glass 5 panel protects the display.

The Android 9 Pie OS customized with MIUI 10 skin comes preloaded on the device. It is the first ever smartphone to be fueled by the Snapdragon 712 SoC that includes 2.3GHz octa-core processor and Adreno 616 graphics. The 64 GB and 128 GB storage editions of the phone include 6 GB of RAM. It lacks support for a microSD card slot.

The rear shell of the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE has a triple camera unit with 48-megapixel primary sensor, 13-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. A 20-megapixel selfie snapper is also available on the device. There is no 3.5mm audio jack on the device. Like the other Mi 9 series phones, it also features an under-display fingerprint reader. The 3,070mAh battery present inside the Mi 9 SE supports 18W fast charging. The regular model of the smartphone comes in color options such as Violet, Blue, and Gray. Its 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants are available with respective price tags of $1,999 (~$298) and $2,299 (~$342) in the home market.

Xiaomi‘s latest models, specifically the Mi 9 SE and Mi 9 Transparent Edition were scheduled to go on sale in China on Thursday, March 14 2019. But in the dying minutes, the Chinese company cancelled the sales. In an announcement made on its official sales platform, the Chinese tech giant cited insufficient stock as the reason for the cancellation of what would have been the second round of sales since the models were launched.

Xiaomi’s products are usually highly sought after. Besides, the company recently admitted that its production process needed to be streamlined in order to ramp up available stock. The company recently disclosed that it was embarking on in-house training in order to boost production. Xiaomi’s CEO had even assured fans that he would personally handle the screwdriver to participate in the process of assembling the smartphones so that there would be adequate stock. Apparently, we are yet to start seeing the result of these moves.

It is possible that Xiaomi is trying to avoid a situation where only about 200,000 units will be available and the models will be out of stock only seconds after going on sale. The company has apologized to fans and did hint that all staff on its production line are doing their best to get enough units ready for the next sales. The models will go on sale again on March 19 which is just a couple of days away.

Xiaomi’s president Lin Bin has disclosed that the Mi 9 SE will be the last model of its kind but it’s not what you think. The Chinese tech giant had hinted severally that it will stop releasing cheap flagships under the Mi brand soon. However, he wasn’t referring to the cheaper price tag of the Mi 9SE but was talking about the size of the phone.

Now, the Mi 9SE features a 5.97-inch display so you might be wondering what he was talking about. The display size looks big, no doubt, but when compared to a 16:9 aspect ratio smartphone, it is just barely the size of a 5.1 inches smartphone. The Mi 9SE utilises the 19:9 aspect ratio which makes for easy grip and one-handed operation. But Lin Bin is saying that with the present trend in 5G as well as demand for a more powerful camera, longer battery life and the need to keep the phone as thin as possible, it has become very difficult to manufacture small screen phones. Thus, Bin categorically stated that the Mi 9 SE might be the company’s last small screen flagship phone.

The Mi 9SE display size brings to mind the Mi 6 flagship which is the predecessor to last year’s Mi 8 flagship. The Mi 6 had a small display but was a popular product among fans, especially among folks who prefer small screen phones. But then, there’s hardly any fan who would mind having a big screen in other to get a bigger battery. Unfortunately, in addition to putting a halt to small screen flagship design, Xiaomi may likely not offer such cheap model under the flagship Mi series. The Mi 9SE comes with a 3,070mAh battery which is due to XIaomi’s desire to keep the thickness at its thinnest. Notwithstanding, the Mi 9SE is an impressive model packing a Samsung AMOLED screen with 2.5D curved glass on top. The device features an on-screen fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chipset. The Mi 9SE will go on sale again in China at 10 am on March 15. At present, the number of reservations for the device on Jingdong is almost 400,000.

The MIUI update that the Chinese giant is going to roll out to both its latest high-end devices will allow everyone to simply touch on the fingerprint reader area in order to open customized shortcuts.

In order to use the feature, the user will need to long press on the fingerprint reader: after that, a menu with several shortcuts will appear and the user will need to swipe on the desired app or feature in order to open it. Besides opening apps, the new fingerprint shortcut feature can also be used to summon the Xiao AI voice assistant, to open the mobile payments screen and much more.

Besides Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE, the feature will be available even on other Xiaomi devices, but only the ones equipped with an in-display fingerprint reader: the Mi 8 Pro was already confirmed a few days ago, and probably the feature will soon land even on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition that is the world’s first Xiaomi phone with a pressure sensitive in-display fingerprint reader.

Xiaomi heralded the birth of its new Redmi series with the launch of the Redmi Note 7 in China. The major highlight of the device was the 48MP main camera sensor it packed on its back. That was missing when the Redmi Note 7 was launched in India with a 12MP main sensor. Instead, Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 7 Pro with the 48MP sensor. The Note 7 Pro also missed out on having the NFC technology onboard, an omission which was pointed out by a Mi fan on Weibo. The fan had asked why the Redmi Note 7 which was announced in India a few days back did not have NFC. He further inquired about the surprise feature the China version would have as Xiaomi is yet to launch the Note 7 Pro in China.

Redmi’s General Manager Liu Weibing in his response suggested that the Redmi Note 7 Pro will not have NFC onboard. He advised fans who are clamouring for NFC to get the Mi 9 SE instead. He also suggested getting the Mi Band 3 NFC version which is a cheaper alternative.

The CEO had earlier promised that the Redmi Note 7 Pro will come with a surprise. Perhaps, he was referring to the powerful 48MP Sony IMX586 onboard. The Redmi Note 7 Pro also featured  Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset as well as 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. Xiaomi is set to launch the Redmi Note 7 Pro in China on March 18. When it does, it is unlikely if the specs will be different from the model launched in India. A change in specs like we saw with the Redmi Note 5 Pro may be counter-productive in the long run.

Xiaomi will be releasing the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE smartphone tomorrow in China. The handset was announced alongside the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi 9 Explorer Edition on Feb. 20. A day ahead of its market release, Xiaomi Product Director Wang Teng Thomas highlighted the 7 major features of the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE that is also present on the Xiaomi Mi 9 flagship phone.

First, the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE has the same holographic illusion design as the Mi 9. The Sony IMX586 48-megapixel primary sensor in its triple camera setup is the same one that’s available on the Mi 9. It also borrows the 20-megapixel front-facing camera from its flagship sibling.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 has the fifth-generation screen fingerprint unlock feature which is also available on the Mi 9 SE. The Mi 9 and Mi 9 SE have the same full HD+ resolution supporting S-AMOLED display. Other common features of both phones include multifunction NFC, infrared remote control and UFS 2.1 high-speed storage.

Xiaomi today held the much-anticipated conference where the flagship Mi 9 was launched alongside the Mi 9 Transparent Edition. Xiaomi also took a cue from the success of last year’s model, Mi 8 SE by unveiling the cheaper Mi 9 SE.

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE comes with a 5.97-inch full-screen AMOLED display with a 2.5D curved glass on top. The display has the water drop notch design at the top which houses the front camera. The water drop notch design ensures the bezels are at their barest, giving the device a 90.47% screen to body ratio. The device is equipped with the fifth-generation screen fingerprint technology.  The Mi 9 SE is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chipset which has some improvements over the Snapdragon 710 SoC. It must be noted that Xiaomi scores a first with this one, as the Mi 9 SE is the first phone to be powered by the new Snapdragon 712 processor. The new chipset sure looks like a powerful one with an AnTuTu benchmark score of 187,626 points. The phone comes in two memory configurations. There is a 6GB RAM and 64GB storage version as well as a second model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The Mi 9 SE comes with a triple camera set up at the rear just like the Mi 9. The configuration is slightly different from that of the Mi 9. The three sensors comprise a 48MP+8MP+13MP. The main camera is a Sony sensor while the front camera is a 20MP sensor with beauty selfie feature. The phone also comes with features such as NFC, GPS, IR blaster and more. For power, the Mi 9 SE packs a 3070mAh battery under its hood with 18W fast charge support.

As for the price, the Mi 9 SE comes with an affordable 1999 Yuan ($297) price tag for the 6GB+64GB variant. On the other hand, the 6GB+128GB storage variant 2,299 Yuan ($342). Now, these are amazing price tags when you look at the specs. Xiaomi also unveiled a protective case for the device priced at just 49 yuan (~$7). Xiaomi is yet to disclose details of its availability but the Mi 9 SE may likely be unveiled for the global market alongside the Mi 9 on February 24 at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

Xiaomi’s upcoming launch event on Feb. 20 will be serve as a platform for announcing the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition. The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Jingdong Mall listing has no information on its specifications. The handset is currently out of stock, but the listing claims that the shipments will be carried out between March 11 and March 20. The seller that has added the listing of the phone has a good reputation among buyers, it appears that the Mi 9 SE could be announced soon.

Qualcomm has recently launched the Snapdragon 712 mobile platform with improved clocking speed than the Snapdragon 710 which powers the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. There is a possibility that the Snapdragon 712 could be powering the Mi 9 SE.

The Mi 8 SE sported a wider notch like the other Mi 8 phones. Hence, it can be said that the Mi 9 SE may feature a waterdrop-style notched display like the Mi 9 flagship phone. Wang Teng Thomas who is the Product Director with Xiaomi has claimed that even mid-range phones from the company will be equipped with in-display fingerprint scanner. Hence, the Mi 9 SE may also feature and in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 SE was announced in two models such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage at its launch. Later, a higher variant featuring 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage was also introduced. These models were respectively priced 1,799 Yuan (~$265), 1,999 Yuan (~$295) and 2,299 Yuan (~$339). Probably, the Mi 9 SE may also get introduced in 4 GB and 6 GB RAM variants.
