Xiaomi has officially teased a new Mi Band 3 variant which it dubbed Explorer Edition. The “Explorer” or “Exploration” was first used on the Mi 8 edition which features a translucent back panel. Now, the company has got a Mi Band 3 version bearing the same name. The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 Explorer Edition doesn’t have a translucent cover rather, it features a translucent milk-colour rubber strap.

The new Xiaomi Mi Band 3 explorer version was teased by the official Xiaomi Band Weibo handle and isn’t any different from the models presently on sale, except for the strap. The translucent strap looks quite eye-catching as a result of the contrast created between the black fitness tracker and the strap. But there isn’t anything special about the translucent strap anyway. Already, the Mi Band 3 is available in Black, Orange and Blue straps.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 will officially go on its first sale tomorrow (June 5) since after its launch on May 31. The fitness band comes with an affordable price tag of 169 yuan (~$26) and is already open for reservation via Mi Home. As at the time of writing this report, the Mi Band 3 reservations had surpassed 640,000 persons in China. Although reservations don’t usually translate into actual sales figure, we expect the device to get sold out in seconds when sales open tomorrow as a result of its cheap price tag.

The Mi Band 3  is an improved version of the Band 2 which was released in 2016. The Band 3 features a 0.78-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen.  which offer a better viewing and user experience. The display can show call notifications and an option to reject calls and also incoming messages on a paired smartphone. The rubber strap also got some improvement which ensures it isn’t just comfortable, the fitness tracker cannot fall off.

It comes with way more functions when compared to the Band 2. Some of the functions include heart rate monitor, weather forecast, alarm clock, daily steps count, sedentary reminder, sleep monitor, event reminder and find my phone function. There is a variant with NFC which cost 199 yuan (~$31). Furthermore, the Mi Band 3 comes with an improved battery, which can last for up to 20 days on a single charge.

Apart from Mi Home, the Mi Bad 3 will also be available on Jingdong (JD.com) from tomorrow for the same price. Xiaomi is yet to disclose when the fitness tracker will hit other markets outside China. If you can’t wait to lay your hands on the device then you may have to source it from third-party retailers like GearBest and Banggood but it comes with a higher price tag.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 is expected to be unveiled soon, perhaps at the launch event scheduled to hold on May 31 at Shenzhen, China. Xiaomi has already revealed the existence of a successor fitness band to the Band 2 which was released in 2016. The Mi Band 3 was even spotted in the hands of Lei Jun during the Black Shark Gaming phone launch.

If you have had cause to order a Xiaomi product from China, you’ll agree that the user manuals are always in Chinese. So most times, foreign users rely on YouTube videos and reviews for directions on how to use the products. The Mi Band 3 isn’t going to be different. We know so because the user manual for the third-generation Mi fitness tracker has leaked online. The user manual is written in Chinese but we can pick up some details about the sports band from the accompanying sketches.

From the pictures, we can gather that the Mi Band 3 installation is basically similar to its predecessors. The fitness tracker is removable from the strap and is inserted into the strap in a pattern  similar to the one used for the Band 2. In addition, the device will use a similar charging cable as that of the Band 2. The shape of the pebble-shaped tracker on the sketch isn’t the same with the Mi Band 2. Compared to the second generation sports band, the display of the Mi Band 3 is more rounded, and the screen is obviously more convex. The Band 3 may likely come in a slightly bigger size so, we may not be possible to swap charging cables with the Band 2. The Band 3 comes with the same round-shaped home button found on the Band 2 but the screen seems to be touch sensitive. Looks like there are various functions that get activated when the screen is swiped up, down, left or right.

Before now the device has received Bluetooth certification showing it will have Bluetooth 4.2 technology. The Mi Band 3 is also expected to come with an IP67 waterproof and dustproof buil d as well as NFC and gesture support.
