On May 31 when Xiaomi announced the Mi Band 3 alongside the Mi 8, the event was full of surprises. First was the Mi 8 Explorer edition with a cool translucent rear panel. The company also announced an NFC version of the Mi Band 3 which can power cardless payments on compatible platforms. It took a long while after its launch for the Mi Band 3 NFC version could become available to buy but it is presently in use. Xiaomi has now announced a new update for the NFC version.

The new update brings two new features, one of which is support for Chang’An card. The card is a universal electronic toll collection system in use in the city of is Xi’an and can be used to pay for various services in the city including utility bills. The second feature is the ability to add a blank NFC card. This would allow the card to be used by a third-party elsewhere.

Apart from these new features, the Mi Band 3 NFC version can be used for contactless payments using Mi Pay in China. Apart from Mi-Pay, the version can be used for bus card and subway ticket payment. The bus card feature will be enabled for use in 167 cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, and several others. Xiaomi released the list of the first batch of bus credit cards that are supported and they are eight in all for now. The NFC version is also compatible with non-Xiaomi NFC smartphones and may likely work with other NFC compatible platforms outside China.

Xiaomi made the NFC-enabled variant of its well-received Mi Band 3 smartwatch available to the public on Wednesday, September 19th. Bearing a relatively steeper price tag, this upgraded version was first announced alongside the regular version in the Chinese market earlier this year.

Following its recent debut, the NFC version of the Mi Band 3 wearable has gone up for sale on Giztop. The feature-laden Mi Band 3 NFC (Near Field Communication) model is designed to facilitate contactless payments using Mi Pay and a myriad of other apps in China and you can now buy it on the official online store of GizmoChina if you’re willing to shell out $39.99.

The NFC version of the Mi Band 3 smartwatch is an absolute bargain at this price, given that it boasts an impressive array of features. Key highlights of the variant include a 0.78-inch OLED Touch big screen, up to 50 meters waterproof, access to social applications and lots more.

Aside from supporting NFC features, the Mi Band 3 bracelet comes with Bluetooth 4.2BLE, which makes it compatible with all latest smartphone with Bluetooth functions. Moreover, its OLED screen shows a slew of information including calories, distances, heart rate, the current time and steps, just to name a few.

The device is intended to monitor daily heart rate changes. It can dynamic-static monitor the wearer’s heart rate and provide data at any time. Aside from that, it comes with a more precise pedometer algorithm.

The Mi Band 3 became available in China shortly after it was launched on May 31 and that has been so since then. The wearable is even shipping abroad thanks to third-party online retailers with the price almost competing with the 199 yuan price tag it adopts in China. Despite the rampant available, the Mi Band 3 has not been completely available. That is because Xiaomi is yet to release the NFC version into the market in China or elsewhere, almost two and a half month after its launch.

As you would recall, the Mi Band 3 was announced to have two models, a Bluetooth version and another version with NFC alongside Bluetooth connectivity. For those who may not know, NFC means Near Field Communication and it refers to a set of communication protocols that allow two electronic devices to establish communication when they are within 4cm of each other. With this feature, the Mi Band 3 can be used for contactless payments using Mi Pay in China. Since it only supports Mi Pay, its use may be limited.

Even its use in China isn’t an easy ride as Xiaomi has hinted that the NFC version is still being tested. The company first shared a picture of the Mi Band 3 with the Bus payment interface on the OLED display and a black strap on August 10. A second picture was shared on Tuesday but this time the Band 3 has a light brown strap. The picture still shows the Mi Pay door card logo with a rider that it is still being tested. The bus card feature will be enabled for use in 167 cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, and several others. The version is compatible with non-Xiaomi NFC smartphones.

We have no doubt that the model will be released soon but no idea when that will happen. We also can’t say if the version will be useful outside China. We’ll keep you posted whenever it is released, though.
