Since then, the company has pushed a major Android update, at least to some models and has also updated its custom ROM. The 5G phone missed out on both updates and that recently prompted a fan to float a petition on Change.org in a bid to get the Chinese tech giant to update the software.

More tales of woe for the Mix 3 5G owners as Xiaomi has reportedly confirmed that it would push MIUI 12 update to the Mi Mix 3 5G in October. If you think that is good news, wait for the catch. A spokesperson for Xiaomi revealed this detail while responding to an inquiry by a fan. The Xiaomi spokesperson also hinted that the device will still be stuck with Android9 even with the MIUI 12 update. Thus, it is unlikely that the Mix 3 5G will ever be updated past Android 9.

The decision to push MIUI 12 to the 5G phone may be as a result of the company bowing to pressure from users who are agitating for an update. The phone is yet to get MIUI 11 update and may likely skip that entirely. But Xiaomi may likely never give the Mix 3 5G Android 10 update. The company had hinted that only a few units were sold and so software support were halted.

The device was later released in Europe and became the first 5G smartphone to go on sale in Spain and Italy priced at €599 (€699.90 in Italy). The Mix 3 5G came preinstalled with Android 9.0 Pie-based MIUI 10. Interestingly, the flagship device is yet to get updated to either MIUI 11 or Android 10 even when MIUI 12 is announced. I’ve come across several comments of fans venting their anger over this unfortunate situation. A Mi Mix 3 5G owner has now taken things beyond mere complaints and has floated a petition on Change.org in a bid to get the Chinese tech giant to update the software.

Apparently, the absence of any new update or the Mi Mix 3 5G isn’t a mistake. Turns out the device didn’t perform well in the market as only a few units were sold and so the company decided to halt software support. Recall that the Mi Mix 3 5G was released at a time 5G connectivity had barely rolled out in Europe. So, enthusiasm wasn’t really high for the device at that time. Who needs a 5G phone when there are no 5G services? Well, a few persons did.

But then, the poor sales are no fault of the few persons who bought the model. The Mi Mix 3 4G which is sold in China has already gotten updated to Android 10-based MIUI 11. Thus, the owners of the 5G version also deserve to get new updates, possibly to MIUI 12 as well.

This petition seems to have drawn inspiration from a similar petition by Mi A3 users urging the Chinese company to push Android 10 update to Mi A3 models. Xiaomi responded in a short time but the update could at best be described as ill-fated. We wait for a response from Xiaomi on this petition.

And it’s been less than three months since the first national 5G network debuted. This month was the turn of Lenovo which officially announced the 5G Edition of its latest flagship: the Z6 Pro. After this exciting announcement, we think it is time to compare it with other Chinese 5G flagships. If we consider the actual diffusion of 5G connectivity and 5G handsets, as well as the potential price range in which Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition should be placed, we believe that the most suitable candidates for such a great comparison are the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G as both are Chinese flagships sharing a lot in common with the new Lenovo’s beast.

Design

Which devices is the best when it comes to the aesthetics is only up to your tastes. Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition’s front side is nothing special due to its classic waterdrop display, but the phone sports an amazing transparent back which allows seeing the internal component from the outside. On the other hand, OnePlus 7 Pro is equipped with a selfie pop-up camera and no display interruptions. Further, it comes in an outstanding and very original Nebula Blue color variant. But my favorite one is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G because it has the best materials: a ceramic back and a 7000 series aluminum frame. It even comes with a slider you can open manually, in order to minimize the bezels around the display. Again, it is just a matter of tastes, the fact I like the Mi Mix 3 5G does not mean it has the best design.

Display

If you are a multimedia/gaming/photography lover and you need the best display, go for the OnePlus 7 Pro without thinking twice. First of all, it features a higher Quad HD+ resolution with 1440 x 3120 pixels. Further, it has a wider diagonal (6.67 inches) as well as a higher refresh ratio (90 Hz). And even its colors are a lot better thanks to the HDR10+ technology and high DCI-P3 coverage. Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G are more or less at the same level when it comes to display quality, but note that Mi Mix 3 5G does not feature an in-display fingerprint reader.

Hardware/Software

The most advanced hardware configuration (on the paper) belongs to the Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition which has a Snapdragon 855 chipset paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. But if we dig deeper, despite it has less internal storage (up to 256 GB), OnePlus 7 Pro 5G provides better performances thanks to better software optimization and a faster UFS 3.0 internal storage. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G loses the comparison as it only comes with 6 GB of RAM, while its rivals go up to 12 GB. All run Android 9 Pie, but only OnePlus 7 Pro has a nearly-stock user interface.

Camera

OnePlus 7 Pro wins even when it comes to camera quality. Its amazing main sensor with f/1.6 focal aperture captures a huge quantity of light and it supports OIS and records 4K videos at 60 fps, with an outstanding stabilization. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is the winner when it comes to front cameras, as it features a dual selfie camera and a front-facing LED flash. Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition looks better than Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G if we talk about rear cameras, but worse than OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.

Battery

As these are 5G smartphones, they will have a much higher battery drain than traditional ones. But it should not be a huge issue as they are equipped with big batteries. We still had no chance to test all of them, but we can currently say that OnePlus 7 Pro and Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition will probably last more. OnePlus 7 Pro 5G has a bigger display with a higher resolution, so it may encounter more difficulties at keeping the battery life long, compared to the Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition. But for now, we can only speculate.

Price

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is actually available only in a single European nation: the UK. It starts from £59 a month for 24 months with £170 upfront cost (mobile plan included), for a total of £1586/€1767/$2000. It is the best phone in this comparison, but it is currently too expensive. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G costs just €600/$682, while price and availability of the Lenovo Z6 Pro 5G Edition are still unknown.

Now, Xiaomi’s Vice President Lu Weibing has shared some updates related to this new wireless communication technology and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G smartphone.

He says that 5G technology is moving rapidly and will cover all the cities by the end of next year. He also claims that by the second of next year, the price of 5G devices will come close to around 2,000 yuan (approximately $291).

Along with all these 5G-related predictions, Lu Weibing also revealed that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G will soon be launched in the Chinese market. The phone, which is the company’s first 5G smartphone, has already been launched in Europe.

Coming to the specifications, the Mi MIX 3 5G has a 6.39-inch Full HD+ display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 93.4% screen-to-body ratio. It is able to achieve this as a result of its slider (magnetic) design.

When it is pulled down, the user is greeted by a dual front-facing camera, which consists of a 24-megapixel primary lens and a 2-megapixel secondary lens. The slider also houses the earpiece, and LED flash; parts that will usually be housed on a bezel.

On the back side, there are dual 12-megapixel cameras with one being a wide-angle lens and other being a telephoto lens. It comes with support for 960fps super slow-motion recording, 4-axis image stabilization, scene recognition, Night Mode and HDR photography.

The smartphone has a single SIM slot, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner for added security. It runs Android Pie with MIUI 10 and is powered by a 3,800mAh battery along with support for Quick Charge 4+ and 10W wireless charging.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G is priced at €599 (€699.90 in Italy) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage variant and is offered in two color options — Sapphire Blue and Onyx Black. However, there’s no information about variants for the Chinese market.

Later on, the Redmi K20 Pro was also included in the Android Q beta program. Today, the Chinese firm has confirmed the roadmap of Android Q beta testing schedule for as many as 11 smartphones through its MIUI forum.

Xiaomi will begin with the beta testing of Android Q update for 9 smartphones like Xiaomi Mi 9, Xiaomi Mi 9 SE, Redmi K20 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Xiaomi Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and Redmi K20 in the last quarter of this year.
As far as Android Q update for other Xiaomi devices, it will be rolled out after the best testing is successfully completed and all the bugs are ironed out. Probably, the stable version of Android Q update for the first 9 Xiaomi phones mentioned above could be made available in first or second quarter of 2020. The Redmi K20 Pro was made official yesterday through a launch event in China. Soon after it was unveiled, the handset has been added to list of Android Q beta upgradable devices.

Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had claimed earlier this month that a new flagship phone is arriving with Android Q. Keeping true to the promise, the Redmi K20 Pro has become eligible to receive the Android Q beta even before its first sale.

The official website states that only the Redmi K20 Pro users in China can update to Android Q beta. In order to install, users are required to seek permission through the MIUI website and then go ahead with the process of flashing the ROM. Since the OS is still in its beta stage, there are some issues that are yet to be resolve. Some of which include no support fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth search cannot find some keyboards, and only some videos appear in Google Drive.

Xiaomi had claimed in March this year that the Mi Mix 3 5G had been successfully tested using China Unicom’s 5G in Shanghai and that the phone can play 8K ultra-high definition videos online. It also says that the end-to-end 5G network solution provided by Nokia Bell is the first multi-vendor 5G live network communication base on the 3.3GHz frequency in China. The tech giant had also on different occasioned demoed video calling and smart home IoT gadget control using the Mix 3 5G over a 5G network. What is left is for Xiaomi to release the Mix 3 5G for sale even though 5G connectivity is not yet widespread. A recent survey revealed that most fans would prefer to upgrade to a 5G phone now, even before widespread connectivity is achieved.

The company also revealed a list of around 21 partners that will be adopting this new Android Q version. Among them is Xiaomi, which has adopted this new version for the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G.

Xiaomi’s Director of the Smartphone Software Department, Zhang Guoquan, has shared an image which shows the Xiaomi Mi 9 flagship smartphone running the all-new Android Q operating system. It seems that the phone is running the International version of the ROM.

Along with this, the company has also shared a list of bugs that come with the Android Q system for the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Mi MIX 3 5G version. Here’s the list:

Design

For these three smartphones, manufacturers opted for three different ways in order to get rid of bezels around the display. Oppo Reno 5G comes with a pop-up front camera embedded in a shark fin-shaped motorized slider. The Huawei Mate 20 X has a classic waterdrop notch with a selfie snapper inside, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G uses a manual pop-up slider which contains selfie cameras. While Huawei Mate 20 X is nothing surprising, Oppo Reno 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G come with very innovative and stunning aesthetics. Whether you should go for the Oppo Reno 5G with its incredible motorized slider or the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G with its ceramic body is up to your tastes.

Display

Coming to the display, if you love multimedia or you are productivity users, go for the Huawei Mate 20 X without thinking twice. At least if you do not mind about having a big phablet. With a diagonal of 7.2 inches, Huawei Mate 20 X has one of the biggest displays ever seen on a phone. Further, it provides a very high color accuracy with its high DCI-P3 coverage, and it is HDR10-compliant. Unfortunately, the OLED panel does not have an in-display fingerprint reader, but this does not affect the quality. On the other hand, it comes with stereo speakers which enhance the multimedia experience.

Hardware/Software

If having the best performances is your main concern, then Oppo Reno 5G is the right choice for you. It is powered by the most powerful Qualcomm’s chipset of 2019: the Snapdragon 855. Even the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G comes with the same chipset, but Oppo Reno 5G has 8 GB of RAM instead of 6 GB, as well as a higher amount of internal storage: 256 GB. And you even get a micro SD slot to expand the internal storage which is not present on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G. Huawei Mate 20 X has a lower-end Kirin 980 chipset, but it can provide a better 5G connectivity thanks to the Balong 5000 modem that reaches speeds up to 6.5 Gbps with mmWave.

Camera

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and Oppo Reno 5G have undoubtedly the most stunning camera departments. They are equipped with similar setups as they both come with rear triple cameras including an ultrawide lens and a sensor with 5x optical zoom. I personally prefer the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G due to its stunning photos with low light conditions, but Oppo Reno 5G performs very well in a lot of scenarios and it is not so distant. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is more interesting when it comes to front cameras: it is equipped with a dual selfie camera including a depth sensor, and it even comes with a front-facing LED flash.

Battery

Given its way bigger 5000 mAh capacity, Huawei Mate 20 X wins the battery life comparison. And it also supports a faster charging technology with a 22.5W power.

Price

Oppo Reno 5G and Huawei Mate 20 X carry a listing price tag of about 999 and 997 Swiss francs respectively (€880), while Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G costs 847 Swiss francs (€740). I personally prefer the Huawei Mate 20 X for its bigger battery, a faster 5G connectivity, its huge displays and awesome cameras. But it is not a phablet for everyone, and if it is your case, then you should go for the Oppo Reno 5G.

Besides being a 5G phone, it is also a Chinese flagship which, (despite still being expensive) will carry a not extremely high price tag. At least not as high as the Galaxy S10 5G and Huawei Mate X. That is why we think there is nothing better than comparing it with all the other Chinese “affordable” flagships sporting a 5G modem. So here we go: Oppo Reno 5G against ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G.

Design

If you want the most amazing design with the most stunning aesthetical features, your best choice is either the Oppo Reno 5G or the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G. While the ZTE Axon 10 Pro comes with a classic waterdrop design, Oppo Reno 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 have a display with a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without a notch. Instead, they rely on pop-up cameras. I personally prefer the Oppo Reno 5G because it has a motorized pop-up mechanism, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G has a manual pop-up slider. However, if we consider the whole design, I would go for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G due to its amazing ceramic body and its sturdier 7000 series aluminum frame. On the other hand, ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G remains quite interesting because it has incredibly narrow bezels and it is waterproof with the IP68 certification.

Display

Judging from the specs on the paper, ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 look like the devices with the best displays due to a higher color accuracy provided by the HDR technology. On the other hand, Oppo Reno 5G has a slightly bigger display with a 6.6-inch diagonal that is not easy to find in affordable flagship phones. All come with an AMOLED display, but the Oppo Reno 5G seems to have the most resistant one as it features a Gorilla Glass 6 front panel. However, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is not far away with its Gorilla Glass 5 protection. In each case, you get an in-display fingerprint reader.

Hardware/Software

Coming to the hardware, Oppo Reno 5G is the winner, but only for a slight margin. Indeed, they all come with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, but the Oppo Reno 5G sports 8 GB of RAM instead of just 6 GB like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the ZTE Axon 10 Pro. Further, its internal storage is 256 GB and it is furtherly expandable with a micro SD, while Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and ZTE Axon 10 Pro stop at 128 GB and the former does not even have a micro SD slot. Android 9 Pie is installed out of the box, customized with a proprietary user interface for Oppo Reno 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G.

Camera

We doubt that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G and ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G are as amazing as the Oppo Reno 5G in terms of camera potentialities, but we can not tell it for sure as we did not test all of these handsets’ cameras thoroughly. Oppo Reno 5G is the first phone to come with a 10x hybrid zoom technology, and it also comes with an optically-stabilized main sensor sporting a 48 MP resolution and a bright f/1.7 focal aperture. The third sensor is a useful ultrawide lens.

Battery

We see quite big batteries on each of these devices, with Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G having a slightly smaller 3800 mAh unit. What makes the real difference on the battery side is the support to Qi wireless charging that is present only on the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G.

Price

Oppo Reno 5G will soon be available in Switzerland with a €900/$1000 price tag, Xiaomi Mi Mix 5G will cost just €600/$670, while the price of the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G is not known yet. In conclusion, Oppo Reno 5G looks like the most amazing handset because of its innovative design, a more powerful hardware side and better camera potentialities. But some may prefer the ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G due to its waterproof certification and Qi wireless charging.

The company says that it has successfully tested using Unicom 5G in Shanghai that the phone can play 8K ultra-high definition videos online. It also says that the end-to-end 5G network solution provided by Nokia Bell is the first multi-vendor 5G live network communication base on the 3.3GHz frequency in China. With the ultra high-speed provided by the 5G network, its possible to stream 8K UHD videos on a smartphone.

As said, the Mi Mix 3 5G is Xiaomi’s first 5G smartphone and one of the few 5G phones that have been released so far. While the company has announced the pricing and release itinerary for Europe during MWC 2019 in Barcelona, it is expected to soon launch the smartphone in China.

The smartphone features a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED with a 1080 x 2340 resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 93.4 percent screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood, it is powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC, coupled with Snapdragon X50 modem, Adreno 630, and 6GB RAM.

It comes with a dual rear camera setup which consists of two 12-megapixel sensors with AI-based features. On the front side also, it features dual cameras – a 24-megapixel primary snapper and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front-facing cameras are placed on a pop-up magnetic slider.

China may soon get the Mi Mix 3 5G, going by a recent speech by Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun. The CE recently granted an interview to the media where he spoke extensively about 5G. Lei Jun stated that this year is the first year of 5G launch and also on how the new technology will affect communication, IoT applications, driverless cars, smart transportation and even TV station. Lei Jun believes the 5G era will be a revolutionary one He also added that the 5G Mi Mix 3 will soon be released in China. Naturally, all of them are flagships and here is an in-depth comparison between their specs.

Design

While LG V50 ThinQ 5G comes up with a standard notched design and it is nothing special in the looks department, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G both come with very original aesthetics. The former has in-display cameras in order to minimize bezels, while the latter opts for a slider design. I would personally prefer the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G simply because it is much more compact than the Galaxy S10 5G, which is definitely too big due to its huge display. In case you are looking for the best build quality, then LG V50 ThinQ wins with its military and IP68 certification making it waterproof and drop resistant.

Display

There is definitely no challenge: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is a clear winner. First, it has a much bigger display, excellent for productivity and multimedia. Second, it comes with the new Dynamic AMOLED technology that enhances color reproduction, and it is even HDR10+ compliant, unlike LG V50 ThinQ 5G and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G. Last but not least, it has a more resistant panel thanks to the Gorilla Glass 6 protection. At the second place of the multimedia ranking, there is LG V50 ThinQ with its high QHD+ resolution, HDR and loud stereo speakers with Quad DAC. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G has an above-average display, but nothing so surprising.

Hardware/Software

With up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G boasts the most advanced hardware department. And in its European version, it can even deliver better performances with 5G. Indeed, the European version is equipped with the Exynos 5100 modem that is more advanced than the Snapdragon X50 found on the U.S. version, as it is a multimode modem (supporting FDD and TDD, as well as mmWave). Samsung Galaxy S10 5G also boasts a very advanced Android customization: the new One UI based on Android Pie. Not saying that MIUI is inferior, but it is still an added value.

Camera

According to the first tests, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G also comes with a more advanced camera department. It is equipped with a quadruple camera on the back consisting of a main 12 MP sensor with a variable aperture, a telephoto lens, an ultrawide lens, and even a TOF camera. It shoots amazing photos in most of the conditions. Even the front cameras seem to be the best out there. LG V50 ThinQ should come right after with its rear triple camera (telephoto + ultrawide lens) and a dual wide-angle front camera. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G is an outstanding camera phone, but it is nowhere able to compete with the quadruple cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, neither with its dual camera setup on the front side. And it may not even be at the same level as the LG V50 ThinQ 5G.

Battery

There are no big differences between the battery capacities of these flagships, just 300 mAh between the smallest and the biggest one. So what will really make the difference? Obviously the hardware and software optimization. Samsung is usually very good at optimizing its phones energy consumption, as well as Xiaomi. So, it will be a hard battle. However, I would choose Samsung Galaxy S10 5G because it supports a faster wireless charging technology as well as reverse wireless charging (it can be used as a wireless power bank to charge other devices).

Price

Given that these devices are still not in the market, do not expect to know all their prices soon. We already know that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G will cost €600/$683 globally, while we do not know anything about LG V50 ThinQ and Samsung Galaxy S10 5G pricing. We expect the first to cost at least $900/€790, while the second will surely go on sale for more than $1000/€880.

We think so because 5G will take centre stage at MWC 2019. Also, a leaked invitation which was spotted online recently shows the tech giant will hold an event on February 24 which is the eve of MWC Barcelona 2019. The invite featured in a tweet by popular tipster Venya Geskin but it was quickly deleted after posting. This wasn’t before some users picked up the post. Unfortunately, there is no screenshot of the post but the leaked poster is already in circulation.

The poster contains the text; “We make it happen,” with the Mi logo but it doesn’t explicitly point at anything. Geskin’s deleted tweet had read, “Exclusive: Xiaomi will hold an event on February 24, possibly for Mi Mix 3 5G.” The reason for deleting it is still unclear but we believe the company want to keep the topic at bay until it is ready to promote the launch event. And so, may have prevailed on Geskin. In another light, the tipster may have discovered the news is fake hence the removal.

Read More: Xiaomi president Lin Bin posts an image of Mi MIX 3 connected with a 5G network

However, there is no doubt Xiaomi has got a 5G version of the Mi Mix 3. The device was showcased at the China Mobile Partner Conference a couple of months back. Xiaomi has also released a video demonstration of the Mi Mix 3 5G in action alongside the Mi smart bedside lamp. The Mi Mix 3 5G version features a Snapdragon X50 modem and was said to have download speeds of up to 2 Gbps. The device is identical in design and other aspects to the 4G version in existence presently.
