Xiaomi, Wednesday, held an event where it officially announced the Mi 10T series comprising the Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro and then the Snapdragon 750G-powered Mi 10T Lite. The company, during the event, equally announced the Mi Watch and its popular 65W GaN charger.

Both products have previously been launched in Xiaomi’s home market – China. The Mi Watch is no doubt one of the popular wearables the company has released this year. It runs proprietary software and is not a Wear OS watch. This is believed to help in battery life longevity.

The Mi Watch features a circular AMOLED display which has a diameter of 1.39 inches and a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. The display has a peak brightness of 450 nits and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

The watch comes with a staggering 117 exercise modes and even has a built-in GPS receiver, so it doesn’t need to be connected to your phone when you go for a run. It also has a 5ATM water resistance rating which means it can be taken for a swim in a pool.

Further, there is a heart rate sensor as well as blood-oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensor onboard. It also comes with ambient air pressure and elevation sensors. This model also features NFC along with voice control.

There is a decent 420mAH battery under the hood which promises up to 16 days of battery life and which can be fully charged in just 2 hours. It weighs just 32 grams.

Xiaomi launched its first smartwatch dubbed as Mi Watch in November of 2019. The Mi Watch received its first update in December, followed by another one in January, which brought several new features. Now, once again, Xiaomi is rolling out another update that adds XiaoAI virtual AI assistant related features.

The Mi Watch featured Xiaomi’s XiaoAI assistant since the launch but it is now getting an overhaul with the new OTA update that is being currently seeded out by the company.

First and foremost, XiaoAI can now speak in three different voices after the update. Users can select from two female voices and a male voice. Further, Xiaomi has enabled quick actions for XiaoAI on Mi Watch. This can be accessed by waking up the assistant and swiping up. Users will be welcomed with three quick actions based on their usage. The more they use their watch, the better the suggestions will get, says the company.

Also, Mi Watch gets a new XiaoAI skills menu with the new update. It can be accessed by swiping up two times after waking the assistant. Users can customize skills as per their choice to ease up their tasks. Last but not least, the update also brings new useful applications to the watch like a compass, barometer, calculator, and others.

As we reported yesterday, Xiaomi has now started rolling out second over-the-air (OTA) update for the Mi Watch in China. The company has also announced new features that have been introduced with this update.

Xiaomi says that it has added algorithmic body energy function and pressure detection feature which is powered by Firstbeat. Along with that, it has also added breathing training function to get relaxed, new dial designs, and fully-featured XiaoAI with functions like one-step voice taxi, among others.

The company had recently revealed that the new OTA rollout for the smartwatch will begin on 17th January and every user will get it by 22nd January.

The Xiaomi Mi Watch comes with a square touchscreen display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It features a 1.78-inch AMOLED curved display with 326 PPI pixel density and the back of the watch is made out of ceramic.

It has a crown on the right that can be used to navigate through the watch UI. Apart from the crown, there’s a multi-purpose button as well as a microphone on the right side. On the left side, you have another microphone hole along with a speaker vent.

The device comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 4G chipset featuring four Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. The watch features one of the biggest batteries ever seen on a smartwatch featuring 570mAh in capacity which the company claims can last up to 36 hours or up to two days on a single charge.

The wearable devices comes loaded with features such as NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi (n), GPS, an independent vibration motor, and a pretty large speaker. It also supports eSIM, which ensures you can connect to the internet via cellular network as well as make and receive calls independently.

Xiaomi has adopted Google’s WearOS platform for its new smartwatch. However, like its smartphones, the WearOS running on the Xiaomi watch will be customized with its own MIUI for Watch skin. It comes integrated with the company’s own XiaoAI smart assistant.

In a related news, the company has also launched a new application named Xiaomi Wear on the Apple App Store. However, the app currently supports only one wearable device from the company — Xiaomi Watch Color.

Earlier today (27th December 2019), Xiaomi went on its official Weibo account to share an apology. The show of sincerity was made after the Chinese tech giant stated that it had to delay the launch of the Mi Watch’s Exclusive Edition.

Xiaomi’s Mi Watch Exclusive Edition had an official launch date set in December 2019. However, the company has now said that the launch will be delayed due to certain reasons that include, insufficient stocks and more emphasis on improving the user experience in the UI department.

Reportedly, the delay of the Mi Watch Exclusive Edition will have it see a new launch date which is in February 2020, about two months from now. It gives the smartphone manufacturing company enough time to prepare as this move indicates that it expects a healthy sales number regardless of the fact that only limited units will be shipped.

Xiaomi yesterday unveiled the Mi Watch alongside the Mi CC9 Pro and Mi TV 5 in China. As usual, not all details would be disclosed during the event especially as three high-powered products were outed. So, there were many questions about the Mi Watch that was left off by fans. Xiaomi has now come out to answer some of the questions.

The response comes from Xiaoheng, the general manager of Xiaomi Ecological Chain via a Weibo post. One of the areas he talked on was the eSIM feature onboard the MI Watch. A number of fans were curious to know the cities in China where the eSIM feature could work. He disclosed that China Unicom users can use the e-SIM in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Zhengzhou, Changsha, Wuhan. On the other hand, China Mobile users in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Chengdu can use the e-SIM. Finally, China Telecom users can assess e-SIM service in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, and Wuhan.

Next, he spoke on the Mi Watch battery life, revealing that the watch can be used for 36 hours under normal usage. Compared to other competing products that use the Wear OS operating system, the Mi Watch battery life is significantly improved.

How about the waterproof level? Xiaoheng disclosed that the Mi Watch can be used in the swimming pool and other shallow waters.

In addition, the smartwatch can be used to control other smart home products as well as order a taxi, set reminders, read the live encyclopedia, listen to songs and listen to more than 100 kinds of smart voice scenes.

He also reiterated that the watch comes with support for several sports modes like outdoor running, outdoor walking, cross-country, mountaineering, indoor running, outdoor cycling, indoor cycling, swimming pool, open water swimming, free sports.

The Xiaomi exec clarified that the Mi Watch strap can be replaced but it has to be with a matching strap of the same size. He advised against using unofficial metal straps or other types of straps, as other features of the watch (communication, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) may malfunction due to mismatch.

Finally, on support for iOS, he disclosed that iOS users can temporarily download the WearOS app binding device through the App Store. However, functions such as NFC, which is dependent on Xiaomi’s app, and management of sports health data won’t be available for now. Apparently, they are still working on making all the features work.

Design and Display

Xiaomi’s Mi Watch draws a lot of design inspiration from the immensely popular Apple Watch Series 5. Both of these devices sport a 1.78-inch square-shaped display with a ceramic back. In contrast, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Huawei Watch GT 2 have a round-shaped display that measures 1.4 inch and 1.39 inch respectively. Consumers who prefer a smartwatch that is not very distinguishable from a conventional wristwatch can choose either of these two.

Chipset, Software and Features

The newly launched Mi is equipped with the Snapdragon 3100 series SoC which is developed by Qualcomm. Rest of the three smartwatches in this comparison pack a chip that is developed in-house by their respective manufacturers. In terms of OS, the Mi Watch and Apple Watch Series 5 have MIUI based on Google WearOS and Apple’s WatchOS, both of which can be navigated via a crown and multifunction buttons which are mounted on the sides of the two devices.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 runs on Samsung’s WearableOS 4.0 which is based on top of Tizen. Finally, the Huwaei Watch GT2 has a custom OS which has a very vanilla feel and looks similar to stock WearOS from Google.

All of these smartwatches support fitness tracking features like step counter, sleep tracker, and can display notifications from the smartphone. The Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch Active 2 support ECG functionality. Whereas one distinguishing feature of the Mi Watch is its SpO2 sensor which can be used to measure oxygen in the blood.

Battery

In terms of battery, the Mi Watch which is the most affordable smartwatch out of the bunch packs the largest battery which is rated at 570 mAh. In contrast, most expensive out of the pack, the Apple Watch Series 4 has the smallest battery which is rated at 296 mAh. The Huawei Watch GT 2 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 are also equipped with decent sized batteries which are rated at 455 mAh and 340 mAh respectively.

The non-cellular variant of the Apple Watch Series 5 (44mm) starts from $ 429 while the 4G enabled variant starts at $ 529. However, with premium strap options, it goes all the way upto $ 1399. The Mi Watch is currently limited to China and it is offered in two variants which includes standard and premium. The affordable variant costs Yuan 1299 (~$ 185) while the top of the line variant costs Yuan 1999 (~$ 257). Cheerfully, innards of both the variants remain the same but the premium variant has a stainless steel strap, sapphire glass protection, and a stainless-steel frame.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 (44 mm) starts at $ 299 for the non-cellular variant, whereas the variant with 4G is priced at $ 449. Last but not least, the Huawei Watch GT 2 is offered in just one variant that skips on 4G and it costs Euro 249 which roughly translates to $ 277.

All of these smartwatches have their own USP’s but the Mi Watch from Xiaomi seems like the most value for money offering in this competition. All in all, the support for e-sim, a large battery and a swift chipset makes it a praiseworthy product which the Chinese corporation has managed to price aggressively.

The price looks expensive but then, considering the topnotch features that are expected on board, it is reasonable. Besides, the design of the Mi Watch is heavily inspired by the immensely popular Apple Watch which costs twice as much.

On the 5th of November, Xiaomi will hold a launch event in China where it will lift covers from the Mi CC9 Pro, Mi TV 5 and it’s first WearOS powered smartwatch which is simply called the Mi Watch. Design, Display and Build

To begin with, the design of the Mi Watch is heavily inspired by the immensely popular Apple Watch. It features a curved sapphire glass which protects the square-shaped touchscreen display and sports a side-mounted crown which can be used to navigate through the UI.

The body/housing of the Mi Watch is made out of polished stainless steel which gives it a premium overall look. Apart from the crown, its right side features a microphone pinhole and a rectangular-shaped multi-purpose button. In comparison, the left side fo the smartwatch harbours the loudspeaker vent and a secondary microphone pinhole.

The rear of the smart wearable seems to be made out of plastic and it makes room for the charging dock and what seems like an HRM (heart rate monitor).

Moving ahead, the Xiaomi Mi Watch will come with a high-quality fluoro rubber strap which can easily be swapped accrediting to its quick-release mechanism. It has already been confirmed that these rubber straps will be offered in four colour options which include Blue, White, Grey, and Black.

Chipset, Battery and Connectivity Options

Under the hood, the Mi Watch will be kitted with the Snapdragon 3100 chipset revealed a previously shared official teaser. The chipset consists of a 4x ARM Cortex A7, 32 bit Quad-core CPU which is clocked at 1.2 GHz and Adreno 304 GPU.

While Xiaomi is yet to reveal the exact battery capacity of the upcoming smartwatch, it is said to have “pretty large” battery.

The company had already confirmed the Mi Watch will support NFC, the chipset’s spec sheet reveals it is equipped with Bluetooth 4.2 and low power 802.11n Wi-Fi and GPS which are presumed to make their way on the upcoming wearable.

Now that we have discussed the design and hardware aspects of Xiaomi’s upcoming wearable, let’s see what kind of features it will bring to the table.

Staple to almost every smartwatch out there, the Mi Watch will have have a built-in fitness tracker/activity tracker which can be used to track things like sleep, calories burned, different sports activity modes and the number of steps taken.

It will be able to display notifications from user’s smartphones which include text messages, emails, calendar alerts and app alerts. The smartwatch is also expected to support alarm clock functionality.

Xiaomi has already confirmed that the Mi Watch with built-in NFC will be capable of supporting AliPay. Likewise, in other countries, this might support Google Pay which is a globally accepted mode of digital payment.

It is also reported to support WeChat and we are excited to see how will its text input function work. Whether it will have an onscreen keyboard, will accept voice to text translation or both, is yet to be confirmed.

Xiaomi has also confirmed that the Mi Watch can store & play music independently which sounds like a praiseworthy feature. Therefore, users can leave their smartphone behind when going for a hike or while working out in a gym.

The smartwatch will supposedly be compatible with both Android OS and iOS, similar to what has been observed with Xiaomi’s previously launched wearables including the Mi Band 4. The device will run on a forked version of MIUI and it will also be capable of remotely controlling smart home appliances like Air Purifier, smart bulb or IoT devices.

Similar to the Apple Watch, it will also support e-sim which will allow it to make and receive phone calls and have access to the internet. Last but not the least, a senior Xiaomi official had shared a short clip of the Mi Watch which revealed that the device will also be capable of playing live TV via supported Apps.

Expected Price

The official price of Xiaomi’s latest wearable will only be unveiled at its official launch event which is scheduled for the 5th of November i.e tomorrow. However, a recently uploaded listing on Xiaomi’s TaoBao store suggests that it will carry a price tag of 1499 Yuan ($ 213).
