The race is on for Xiaomi’s next big automotive reveal. Xiaomi YU9, the company’s third car, has broken cover in Xinjiang, China, sparking a wave of buzz across the industry. What makes this test stand out is not just the extreme mountain terrain, but the fact that CEO Lei Jun himself is on site, fueling speculation that the YU9 could be nearing a major milestone on its road to a 2026 launch.

Spy photos of a camouflaged SUV believed to be the YU9 surfaced online during testing in Xinjiang. The site, located at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains, is known for its high elevation and extreme weather conditions. These factors make it an ideal location for endurance testing of powertrain systems and overall vehicle performance.

The focus of the current test phase is on battery life, charging performance, and sun protection, key elements for electric and hybrid vehicles operating in harsh environments. This kind of high-altitude testing mirrors the process Xiaomi followed for its earlier models, the Xiaomi SU7 and Xiaomi YU7, shortly before their official launches.

Top Executives on Site

Lei Jun confirmed his arrival in Xinjiang through social media posts, sharing photos taken near the Kunlun Mountains. Other top executives also participated in the testing process. This level of executive involvement highlights the strategic importance of the YU9 project for Xiaomi’s growing automotive business.

Hybrid Powertrain and Long EV Range

Although official specifications have not been released, leaked and rumored details suggest that the YU9 will use an extended-range hybrid powertrain. It is expected to feature an 80 kWh battery, offering more than 400 km of pure electric range. The SUV’s expected length is over 5.2 meters with a height of around 1.8 meters, placing it in the large D-segment category.

Spy photos also suggest that the YU9 may not use a dual-screen layout in its central control area but is likely to feature lidar sensors for advanced driver assistance functions.

Market Launch Expected in 2026

The first spy photos of the YU9 appeared in late 2024, and according to a report from Deutsche Bank, Xiaomi plans to launch a large hybrid SUV in 2026. Given its size, powertrain, and testing timeline, the YU9 fits this description closely. This suggests that the vehicle is moving toward pre-production testing, with a formal debut likely in the near future.

Xiaomi Auto’s Rapid Growth

Xiaomi’s entry into the automotive sector began in March 2021, and progress has been rapid. The company completed its first trial production car in August 2023 and launched the SU7 in March 2024. The YU7 followed in May 2025, marking Xiaomi’s second major EV release. The company also secured its own manufacturing qualification in July 2024 and expanded its retail and service network across China.

By July 2025, cumulative deliveries of Xiaomi vehicles exceeded 300,000 units. Alongside new model development, Xiaomi is also investing in advanced autonomous driving technology through its Xiaomi HAD system, set to launch by the end of 2024.

A Strategic SUV Launch Ahead

With high-altitude testing underway, executive presence on site, and a clear product roadmap, the YU9 is shaping up to be a major addition to Xiaomi’s automotive lineup. Its extended-range hybrid powertrain and large SUV profile suggest the company is aiming to compete strongly in China’s high-end SUV market segment starting in 2026.

Xiaomi Group has reached a major milestone as its market value surpassed HK$1 trillion for the first time. The company’s stock closed at HK$39.85, marking its highest price ever. This surge comes after a strong performance in recent months, with the stock rising over 7% on January 24, 2025, to close at HK$37.1. Earlier in the month, on January 3, it had already hit HK$36.25, the highest since 2021.

Xiaomi’s financial performance

Xiaomi first went public on July 9, 2018, with an IPO price of HK$17. However, the stock initially fell below its IPO price and later dropped to an all-time low of HK$8.28 in September 2019. Since then, Xiaomi’s stock has made a remarkable recovery, reaching its record high in January 2025.

Xiaomi CEO – Lei Jun

Xiaomi’s financial results for Q3 2024 exceeded market expectations. The company reported revenue of RMB 92.51 billion, surpassing the estimated RMB 90.28 billion. This represented a year-on-year growth of 30.5%. Net profit stood at RMB 5.35 billion, also above the forecasted RMB 4.73 billion, with a year-on-year increase of 4.4%. However, the company faced losses of RMB 1.5 billion in its innovative business segment, which includes IoT, electric vehicles, and emerging technologies.

Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, chairman, and CEO, described the company’s latest performance as its best in history. Xiaomi is focusing on strategic investments in high-end smartphones, AIoT, and smart electric vehicles. With strong financials and a clear vision, Xiaomi continues to establish itself as a global technology leader. Investors are now looking forward to the company’s Q4 2024 earnings to see if it can maintain its growth momentum.

How has Xiaomi become a global tech powerhouse?

Xiaomi Group is a leading electronics company headquartered in Beijing, China, founded by Lei Jun in April 2010. Recognized as the largest smartphone company in China in 2014, Xiaomi is now among the top five smartphone vendors worldwide. The company offers a diverse range of smartphone series, including Mi, Redmi, Blackshark, and Pocophone, catering to different user preferences.

With approximately 291.6 million active MIUI users, Xiaomi has built a strong ecosystem beyond smartphones, manufacturing laptops, mobile accessories, wearables, home appliances, and smart-home devices. In 2019, the company expanded into lifestyle accessories such as bags, glasses, and even umbrellas. Xiaomi also ventured into financial services with Mi Credit in India (2018), providing easy access to personal loans. Additionally, it offers value-added internet services like Mi Music, Mi Video, and Mi Game, further enhancing its digital footprint.

According to the man himself, both variants will carry the same 4030mAh battery while still retaining slim builds despite the large batteries. On top of that, he also confirms that we’ll be seeing an in-display fingerprint sensor on both devices as well.

According to Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun, CC stands for Colorful & Creative and it is developed by the Chic & Cool 90 team. This team is composed of people born in the 90s who work at Xiaomi and Meitu’s research and development department. These devices are both very design oriented, so it makes why Xiaomi wouldn’t want to make these bulkier than need be.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi Mi CC9 Series Rumor Roundup

This also explains why we’re getting in-display fingerprint sensors on both versions of the device. It makes sense to add new and cool features to a device focused mainly on being trendy and fresh. How the actual product will turn out remains to be seen, though we’ve got high hopes for this one. We’re also eager to know how it’ll turn out as the Mi A3 overseas.

Xiaomi Mi CC9 is supposed to be the mid-tier smartphone of the Mi CC series, while the CC9e is the elite variant. It will come in at least two vibrant color variants: White Lovers and Dark Blue Planet. The CC9e on the other hand, we’re not too sure about. There’s not a huge amount of news on it like there is about the CC9, though we do know it’s the elite variant. The recent teaser is coming on the heels of the one earlier teased by Xiaomi VP, Hugo Barra. Mr Barra’s teaser did no good in enabling us know what the product will likely be.

Going by the information contained in the teased post, the new technology from Xiaomi would be unveiled officially on January 6, 2017 at 3.00 for the world to witness. While we cannot really pinpoint what the so called new innovative technology from China is, we can only take a cue from the content of the teased image.

The poster contained some set of programming code using the C programming language which means the product has something to do with computer programming, perhaps on mobile devices. Perhaps this could be a new operating system, it could be AI, it could be something out of this world!

Read More: Xiaomi to Unveil Yi Erida Drone and Yi 4K+ Action Cam at CES 2017

Xiaomi is an innovative start up, so it is always striving to improve its standing and considering the company’s interest to enter the US market, this could be a perfect spring board to achieve that. Already the company has got the Yi Erida drone an Yi 4K+ action cam under its sleeves for release in CES 2017. However, as to what the product really is, we’ll have to wait till January 6 to find out.

Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun was in defence mode on his microblog this week; trying to persuade people that the huge price cut was not a last ditch attempt at meeting its own sales expectations. Xiaomi has cut the price of its third generation model by 25%, and this is rumoured to be because of the need to clear excess inventory and give the firm a chance of meeting their target of selling 60 million smartphones in 2014. Lei’s blog responses were apparently amused by the insinuations but there was no direct denial to any of the claims except to say that Xiaomi is aggressively expanding capacity to meet demand. Although with the huge competition from the many new high quality and cheap smartphones, it seems plausible that Xiaomi are beginning to feel the strain and possibly take steps to compete more effectively.

JD.com spent the week waxing lyrical about its annual promotional event which took place on June 18th; featuring some memorable photographs of JD’s founder Richard Liu delivering products around Beijing on a motor scooter. The first event of this kind took place in 2010 and this year JD reported its order intakes had doubled from last year’s figures. Liu’s personal blog was strangely silent regarding the promotion, but other JD executives were sufficiently indulgent about it on their microblogs. Vice President Xu Lei, apart from hyping JD’s own promotional event, pointed out the other companies who used June 18th as a day for promotion. Suning and Alibaba representatives were tweeting about their own events so it seems June 18th is becoming a major sales event for all.

Also, there has been much cynicism regarding the role of Tencent in bringing about a record fine for piracy for rival company Alibaba in relation to the recently acquired UCWeb web browser. It has been reported that Tencent was a major force pushing for the fine of 260 million yuan. He has been roundly criticised by executives of both Alibaba and UCWeb, which seems a little odd given that piracy is something that harms all of the big players and all stand to benefit from harsh sanctions in the end.
