While the strategy has served the company quite well since its advent, Xiaomi knows that in order to keep up growth, it has to rise above the competition. And what better way to do so than improving research?</p>
<p>With that likely in mind, Xiaomi chairman and founder Lei Jun yesterday announced that the company&#8217;s goals for investment into R&amp;D in the next 5 years have been increased to 100 billion Yuan or around $15 billion. The company&#8217;s previous announcement from a couple of years back had set the amount at 50 billion Yuan, so the upgraded plans impart a perfect two-fold increase.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-large wp-image-433863 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-764x1024.jpg?x44794" alt="lei jun xiaomi R&amp;D investment" width="696" height="933" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-764x1024.jpg 764w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-224x300.jpg 224w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-768x1030.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-696x933.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-1068x1432.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment-313x420.jpg 313w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/lei-jun-xiaomi-RD-investment.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></p>
<p>The CEO further revealed under the same post that 22 billion Yuan had already been invested over the past two years and that Xiaomi now has 16,000 engineers, meaning things have been going smoothly and in accordance with plans. He says that all of it is being done to &#8220;live up to the expectations of Mi Fans.&#8221;</p>
<p>And it&#8217;s not like all the money flowing into R&amp;D has been fruitless as results have indeed been reflecting on its latest products &#8212; a good example being the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/28/xiaomi-12-xiaomi-12-pro-and-xiaomi-12x-phones-officially-launched/">Xiaomi 12</a>&#8216;s self-developed CyberFocus and Image Brain tech on its cameras that promises strides in object tracking and image processing speeds. The investment also very likely has a major role to play in getting the company to diverge into other businesses including <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/12/27/deal-get-xiaomi-mijia-pocket-photo-printer-for-55-retail-price-90/">smart home products</a> and even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/10/19/xiaomi-shares-jump-5-following-electric-cars-production-announcement/">EVs</a>.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-290231 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi" width="600" height="450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/xiaomi-logo-560x420.jpg 560w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>The Chinese tech giant made the announcement earlier this week, marking a year after the company made an entry into the Japanese market. Furthermore, Xiaomi even plans to relocate to new offices in Japan to double its overall employee count in the region. At the moment, Xiaomi is the world&#8217;s fourth largest smartphone manufacturer, but it aims to surpass Apple and Huawei in terms of global output next year, as per a <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/China-tech/Xiaomi-to-double-Japan-R-D-staff-as-Huawei-stumbles" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>NikkeiAsia</em> </a>report.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/10/oppo-reno5-5g-and-reno5-pro-5g-launched-in-china-with-snapdragon-and-mediatek-processors-respectively/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OPPO Reno5 5G and Reno5 Pro 5G launched in China with Snapdragon and MediaTek processors respectively</a></strong></h6>
<p>Thus, the company is focusing on the Japanese market, which it believes has a potential for growth. It even plans to roll out more than 15 consumer electronic appliances and other gadgets in the country as well, which can be paired with smartphones in the arriving year. At the moment, Xiaomi has not disclosed the exact number of engineers that it employees. Notably, the Chinese competitor Huawei arrived in the Japanese market before Xiaomi, although, it is currently on uneven grounds as it struggles after the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/17/us-reinforces-restrictions-on-huaweis-access-to-chips-and-other-tech/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> impacts of the US sanctions</a> that have disrupted its supply chain.</p>

<p>Back in 2019, Huawei only held a 5 percent market share in Japan, which leaves a lot of space for other Chinese tech giants to capitalize on. Since it has arrived in Japan, Xiaomi has offered products like budget friendly handsets, rice cookers, and even air purifiers. It even launched its first 5G enabled handset in September 2020. As the company is expanding its production capacity, we can expect it to rival if not beat Huawei, which is in dire straits.</p>

The new complex would be devoted to research and development (R&amp;D) for its mobile phone business. Xiaomi&#8217;s president Lin Bin recently visited the new R&amp;D complex at Shenzhen and shed some light on the company&#8217;s plans for the centre.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-29763" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/xiaomi-service-center-001_thumb.jpg?x44794" alt="Xiaomi to open R&amp;D Center in India" width="590" height="436" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/xiaomi-service-center-001_thumb.jpg 590w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/xiaomi-service-center-001_thumb-300x221.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px" /></p>
<p>Lin Bin hinted that the R&amp;D centre would be tailored towards conducting research and developing innovative and high-quality products for Xiaomi&#8217;s smartphone division. The smartphone arm is unarguably the most successful aspect of Xiaomi&#8217;s growing business concerns so, the tech giant strives to boost the quality of its products in order to attract more patronage. Lin Bin also disclosed that his company would recruit 1000 technical experts this year ad some of them would be deployed to the Shenzhen R&amp;D centre which it hoped to build into one of its strongest R&amp;D centre, second only to the Beijing Headquarters. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/xiaomi-rd.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-169245" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/xiaomi-rd.png?x44794" alt="Xiaomi R&amp;D" width="600" height="391" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/xiaomi-rd.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/xiaomi-rd-300x196.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>

<p>It could be recalled that Xiaomi recently invested hugely in the building of a new complex in Wuhan which would no doubt also house an R&amp;D centre among others. The company recently went global with its IPO listing which would attract more investors. If this pace is sustained, we could be looking at Xiaomi emerging as one of the world&#8217;s top 500 companies very soon.</p>
