Xiaomi brands itself as an internet company but the Chinese giant is best known for its smartphones which have a durable build coupled with affordable pricing. A new report by the popular research firm Counterpoint has just revealed the top-selling smartphones of April 2018 in the global market. The top 10 published by Counterpoint highlights the supremacy of Samsung and Apple in the mobile sector, and Xiaomi is the only other brand which appeared in the ranking. At the first place, there are Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, followed by Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 8.

The second half of the ranking starts with Xiaomi Redmi 5A, which is the most entry-level and affordable smartphone by the Chinese hi-tech giant. At the 7th place, there is again Apple with its older iPhone 6, while at the 8th place there is Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus that is known as Redmi Note 5 in India.

Design

Their designs are pretty good for $150. Both feature a full metal unibody design which is not the most original one, but grants a solid build quality and a sleek body. Xiaomi Redmi 5 is the more compact device, while the K5 Note is the one with a wider display which is more suitable for productivity. Aesthetically, the K5 Note reminds of the latest Honor mid-rangers due to its dual camera setup positioned near the top right corner, while Redmi 5 is a bit more original because of its design and the available color variants.

Display

Both the devices come with a tall 18:9 display, but as said above, Lenovo K5 Note has a bigger panel. The resolution is the same (HD+), so you will get a slightly higher detail on the Redmi 5 due to its higher pixel density. The HD+ resolution is not the max on a 6-inch display, but the wider panel makes it more comfortable to use with complex apps. We will not choose a winner on the display side, it is up to you to decide if you want a bigger but less detailed display or a smaller but more detailed one.

Hardware/Software

We got exactly the same SoC on these devices: the Snapdragon 450. It is an octa-core chipset for the low-end sector, but it is not the most entry-level Qualcomm’s chipset. Indeed, it is the best one from the 4xx series, so you will get a pretty decent performance if you choose one of these devices. Further, you can get up to 4 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB on the K5 Note (4/32 GB for the Redmi 5), that is a high-end memory configuration which is very good in multi-tasking. In my opinion, the MIUI found on the Redmi 5 is definitely a better user interface than the one of K5 Note. It has tons of additional features and stunning performance, so I would pick the Redmi 5 for the software. Note that K5 Note has a micro SD dedicated slot (you can use the dual SIM slot and the micro SD one at the same time).

Camera

Photos shot from the Xiaomi Redmi 5 did not surprise us too much and we believe that Lenovo K5 Note will be able to do better. Xiaomi Redmi 5 shoots detailed photos in good light conditions, but not impressive ones, and a lot of digital noise starts appearing with low light. Lenovo K5 Note has an interesting dual camera with a 16MP resolution capable of calculating depth for an excellent bokeh effect. We are yet to see the first camera samples, but it seems better on the paper.

Battery

The battery side is another victory for Lenovo K5 Note. It features a massive 3760 mAh unit. Paired with very efficient components such as the Snapdragon 450 SoC and the HD+ display, we believe it will provide a full day of battery life even with a stressed use. Xiaomi Redmi 5 still has a satisfying battery life, but it isn’t as good as its opponent.

Price

The best thing is that both Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Lenovo K5 Note are sold at the same and very affordable price tag. In their 3/32 GB variant, both start from 799 Yuan in China (roughly $124/€106). Xiaomi is always the king of quality-price ratio, but this time it has a very good competition. According to us, Lenovo K5 Note wins the comparison thanks to its bigger battery and potentially better camera department.

When it comes to the price range under $200 or €200, you’ll probably end up buying a Xiaomi phone in the current market standing. But Meizu is putting a lot of efforts in this price range and to some extent, the company’s devices have started to get attention. This week, the company announced the new Meizu M6T, a device which will cost around €100 and is expected to affect the sales of Xiaomi Redmi 5. Here’s an in-depth comparison between the Meizu M6T vs Xiaomi Redmi 5.

Design

Despite the fact that it was launched in elegant shades, Meizu M6T is not really the best phone that you can get when it comes to aesthetics and build quality. It has a cheap plastic design, but this will hopefully make the signal stronger. Xiaomi Redmi 5 has a higher quality metal back, it is more compact and even thinner, even though displays come with the same size. However, Meizu M6T is the only one among the two coming with a comfortable mBack fingerprint reader which can help you navigate in the UI through gestures.

Display

Two 5.7-inch panels with an HD+ resolution and the IPS technology. With these specs, do not expect to see a noticeable difference between the viewing quality of these two panels. HD is the minimum resolution you can get in this price range, but it is also rare to find a Full HD phone under $120. Further, the low resolution helps a lot with the energy consumption.

Hardware/Software

There is nothing to compare when it comes to hardware: Xiaomi Redmi 5 wins. It sports an octa-core Snapdragon 450 SoC by Qualcomm which can run at a max frequency of 1.8 GHz. And it is a much better processor than the octa-core Mediatek MT6750T present on the Meizu M6T. It is faster and way more powerful. On the other hand, note that Meizu M6T has a variant with 64 GB of internal storage which is not available with the Redmi 5. Both phones come with Android Nougat out of the box, but given that they are heavily customized with Xiaomi’s and Meizu’s own user interfaces it does not have a strong impact. Both these devices are full of additional features and when we talk about software it is all about individual tastes, even though we prefer MIUI as its a bit more functional and user-friendly.

Camera

Given that these are devices sold for less than $150 we can not define them camera phones, but Meizu M6T has a camera which seems very interesting for this price range. It is a dual setup with 13 + 2 MP resolution which can calculate depth for the portrait mode. Further, it has a good 8 MP selfie camera with a decently-bright f/2.0 aperture. We believe Meizu M6T is a better camera phone than its opponent.

Battery

3300 mAh batteries in each case, so we will have to test them to know exactly which one will last more. However, we are kinda sure that, just like Xiaomi Redmi 5, Meizu M6T will provide a great battery life. It has low-energy hardware components and an above-average battery capacity which should allow it to last up to 2 days with a low/moderate use, just as Xiaomi Redmi 5 does. Note that only Xiaomi Redmi 5 supports fast charging technology, so you will probably have to wait for a bit more in order for the Meizu M6T to charge to 100%.

Price

Price is not really the element which establishes the winner as they are very similar.

In China, Meizu M6T starts from €108/$125 for the base configuration, while Xiaomi Redmi 5 starts from €103/$120. You should go for the Meizu M6T if camera and selfies are your main concern. Otherwise, Xiaomi Redmi 5 is a better choice. For now, the availability of Meizu M6T has been announced only in China and we do not know if and when it will be available outside the country. So it looks like the Redmi 5 is the only choice if you do not live in China.

Xiaomi, which has been aggressively launching devices in the Indian market since past few months, is now gearing up to launch yet another smartphone in India. While the company has not yet revealed which phone it plans to launch, it is believed to be the Redmi 5.

During the launch of 32-inch and 43-inch models of the Mi TV4A in India a couple of days ago, Xiaomi India teased a new smartphone launch. Now, Amazon India has put on a teaser image on its website revealing that the upcoming smartphone from Xiaomi will be an Amazon Exclusive device. The phone will be launched in India on 14th March.

Recently, Manu Kumar Jain, Global VP, and MD of Xiaomi India posted a teaser on Twitter with the caption, “#CompactPowerhouse is launching on 14th March! Slim, sleek and compact! Yet a true super powerhouse! Guess what this is?”

The Redmi 5 was launched in China in December 2017 along with Redmi 5 Plus, making them the first smartphones from the China-based company to feature a full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch IPS HD+ display with 1440 x 720 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass protection on top.

Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz along with Adreno 506 GPU. It comes in two variants based on the memory configuration — 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB onboard storage. There’s also a microSD card slot, which enables users to expand the storage capacity up to 128GB.

The phone comes with a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera sensor with an individual pixel size of 1.25µm, phase-detection autofocus, ƒ/2.2 aperture, LED flash, HDR, and Full HD video recording support. On the front side, there’s a 5-megapixel camera sensor with a fixed-focus lens and 1080p video recording support.

It also comes with a fingerprint sensor placed on the back panel, for added security. The dual SIM smartphone’s connectivity options include 4G LTE, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, FM Radio, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, IR blaster, micro USB 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The phone runs on Android Nougat-based company’s own MIUI 9 operating system. The phone is powered by a 3,300mAh battery which supports 5V/2A charging.

The Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has just published a new teaser on Twitter which refers to the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. It has already been confirmed that the most awaited Xiaomi midrange of H1 2018 is launching in India on Valentine’s Day (February 14), but it is speculated that it will just be a re-branded version of the Xiaomi Redmi 5, and it is also expected to arrive in a Prime variant which could be a re-branded Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. The teaser comes with an image attached and it contains the #GiveMe5 hashtag. The image is taken from a teaser video published by Xiaomi India, according to which Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will have a display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and narrow bezels.

From a drawing showed in the image, the handset does not look identical to the Xiaomi Redmi 5, and this makes us think that we may be talking about a different device. In the teaser video, we can read that “5 lets you see more, 5 gives you the widest perspective, 5 is an all-rounder device, and 5 makes colors come alive”. From these words, it seems that the midrange will have a very wide screen and a high resolution as well. At last, according to the video shared by Flipkart the phone will be officially announced on February 14, just like the previous rumors suggested.

Previous leaks suggested that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is going to be launched with an octa-core Snapdragon 636 chipset by Qualcomm, which is the successor to the power-efficient Snapdragon 630. The SoC is expected to be paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. On the rear side, we expect to see a dual camera configuration with resolutions of 16 and 5 MP, while the selfie camera is rumored to have an 8 MP resolution. Meizu M6s has been made available for pre-orders in China with a price of about $186/152€, while Xiaomi Redmi 5 can be found at €140-150 with a bit of luck, thanks to online street prices. Meizu M6s is definitely a better device and we suggest to spend a bit more to get it, or to go for the larger Redmi 5 Plus model.

Xiaomi continues to add more features to its latest MIUI 9 ROM, the latest being  Smart Gesture. MIUI 9 Developer ROM has now gotten a new update that brings onboard full-screen smart gestures which could completely replace onscreen navigation buttons or serve as an alternative form of navigation.  The new update has been pushed to the present crop of Xiaomi full-screen models including the Mi Mix, Mi Mix 2, and the recently launched Redmi 5, and Redmi 5 Plus running MIUI 9 Development version. 

Smart Gestures is not a new feature as it is already available on the Android operating system but this is the first time it is available to Xiaomi models running its custom ROM based on the Android kernel. Smart Gestures are made available as a result of the touchscreen display available on smartphones. The smart touchscreen can identify the palm and finger contact. The user and the system become integrated as a result of the feature, making the system more intuitive, resulting in faster response times and increased productivity.

In the case of MIUI 9, the update that brings the Smart Gesture is version 7.12.25 and after the upgrade, users will need to go to navigation settings and switch from full-screen to full-screen gestures. Basically, there are three operational methods available. To go back to home screen (desktop), you just slide up from the bottom of the screen. This is especially useful since there is no physical home button on the full-screen models. Also, if you slide a little from the bottom edge of the screen and then pause, it reveals your recently opened or running apps. Finally, to return to the previous screen, you just slide from the left or right edge of the screen.We believe that more Smart Gestures features would be made available as time goes on.

Earlier this month, Xiaomi joined the growing list of smartphone manufacturers who have launched a smartphone will a full-screen display. The company launched two phones — Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, featuring an 18:9 aspect ratio display.

At the time of announcing the smartphones, the company revealed that it will be available in four colour options — Gold, Rose Gold, Blue and Black. The Redmi 5 went on sale last week, but the Black colour option was not available.

Today, the company has announced that the Black colour variant for the Redmi 5 will now be available from 25th December, at the same price — 799 Yuan (approximately $122) for the 2GB RAM model while the 3GB RAM will be available for 899 Yuan (approximately $137).

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 sports a 5.7-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz, along with Adreno 506 graphics.

The phone, which has a full metallic body, comes in two options — 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB onboard storage. There is also a microSD card slot, allowing users to further expand the storage capacity.

There is a 12-megapixel rear camera sensor with a f/2.2 aperture with 1.25 µm pixel size that is equipped with a Soft-LED flash. It comes with features like phase detection auto-focus (PDAF), dark light enhancement technology, facial recognition, HDR, Panorama and Burst mode.

It also comes with a 5-megapixel selfie snapper that is coupled with features like Smart Beauty 5.0, facial recognition, and full HD video recording at 30fps. The device is running on Android Nougat operating system based MIUI 9.

A week ago, Xiaomi unveiled its first affordable phone with an 18:9 near-borderless display. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 was also announced alongside Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. Someone might already think that the Plus version, due to its mid-end specs and its wide display, will replace the Redmi Note 5. In this article, you can find our first Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Hands on pictures to see its design in a detailed way.

The screen is surely the biggest innovation of this phone if we compare it with its predecessor. While Redmi 4 Pro had a small 5-inch panel, this handset offers a huge 5.99-inch display (just like Xiaomi Mi Mix 2!) with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Even though the display is big, the phone remains quite compact due to its narrow bezels which reminds me of LG G6 (dimensions: 158.8 x 75.45 x 8.05, weight: 179.5 grams). If you buy the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, you will have to say goodbye to capacitive keys outside the screen, while the front camera remains at the same place, alongside the front speaker for calls.

The body of Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus is entirely made of aluminum and it is not so different from the one of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, but the look and the ergonomics have been improved with more rounded borders. The rear side houses a single camera with a resolution of 12 MP which has a gold rim as you can see in the photos, but it is not gold-plated like the one of Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Under the camera, you can find a dual LED, dual-tone flash, and a circular fingerprint reader just like other midrange Xiaomi phones. On the upper side, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus has a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones and an IR sensor to use it as a remote.

On the left side, there is a dual SIM tray: the phone sports a hybrid dual SIM slot, you can choose to use the second slot as an additional SIM slot or a micro SD slot to expand the internal storage. On the right side you can find the volume rocker and the power key, while on the lower part there is a micro USB port to charge the battery (yes… still micro), the mono speaker and the microphone. The Gold variant in the photos is not the only color option, there is also a Rose Gold variant, a Black, and a Blue one. Other specs include a Snapdragon 625 SoC, 3 or 4 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage (depending on the variant) and a 4000 mAh battery. The listing price in China goes from 151 to 196 dollars.

The camera department has never been a very strong point of Xiaomi phones, but with the latest devices launched by the Chinese giant, things are seeming to change. Look at the Mi Note 3 for example, which has been the first phone to enter the top 10 best camera phones by DxOMark. Now, thanks to our Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Camera samples, you can check if the quality has improved even on the affordable phones, besides high-end and flagship ones.

On the rear side, for photography, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus sports a single camera with a resolution of 12 MP and a f/2.2 aperture. It supports phase detection autofocus and HDR, and below the sensor, there is a dual LED dual-tone flash. It can record video at a max resolution of 1080p at 30 fps. The front camera has a 5 MP resolution and it can record videos in 1080p too. Photos shot in good light conditions show a pretty nice level of detail and also with a nice color accuracy. However, when it comes to low light conditions (indoor and at night), the level of noise increases in a noticeable way and there is a consistent loss of detail. Its not something that’s unacceptable for a phone on its price range, but we are definitely far from top camera phones.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus can shoot acceptable photos, but it is not a phone which is mainly focused on the camera. So if your main concern is the camera department, you’d better go for the Xiaomi Mi A1 which can be found at a similar price. Regarding other specs, the handset sports a near-borderless display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a size of 5.99 inches, and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. Under the hood, there is an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor by Qualcomm, which can run at a max frequency of 2 GHz.

The SoC is paired with 3 or 4 GB of RAM depending on the variant that you choose to buy, and 32 or 64 GB of internal storage which you can expand with a micro SD. The battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh, which is way more than Xiaomi Mi A1 (3080 mAh). The body is entirely made of metal and it has been announced in four different hues: Gold, Rose Gold, Blue, and Black. In China, the device has been launched with a price tag of about 151 dollars for the base variant and 196 dollars for the 4 GB RAM version.

But it is costlier. It has been launched in the Asian market with a price tag of 150 dollars (126 Euros), while Xiaomi Redmi 5 is available starting from just 120 dollars (101 euros) in the base version.

Xiaomi launched its latest smartphones — Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus last week. Today, the phones will go on sale for the first time in China. The phones are the first devices from the China-based smartphone manufacturer to feature a full-screen display.

The first sale will begin today, i.e. December 12 at 10 AM in China. Both the devices will be available through retailers like Xiaomi Mall, Jingdong Mall, Suning Tesco and Lynx.

The smartphone features full metallic design body and will be available in four color options, including Gold, Rose Gold, Blue and Black.

Since the device comes with full-screen display, it lacks capacitive touch buttons. Instead, the company has opted to provide on-screen buttons on Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

The Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels and 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor, clocked at 1.8GHz and coupled with Adreno 506 graphics.

The device will be available in two variants based on memory configuration — 2GB RAM with 16GB internal storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB onboard storage.

The camera specifications of the Redmi 5 Plus model are same as the Redmi 5. This model also comes with MIUI 9 pre-installed, which is based on Android Nougat operating system. The phone is fuelled by a 4,000mAh battery, which according to Xiaomi, provides battery life of around two days on single charge.

Both smartphones features a fingerprint sensor at the back of the device for added security features. The fingerprint scanner is placed just below the camera module.

If you are searching for a phablet but you have a very low budget, these two handsets may be the best in the market for your needs. Seeing that they are very similar and we can say the same about their price, we think it is appropriate to make a Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Redmi Note 5A comparison, at least basing on specs on the paper, especially because they are entry-level phones.

Xiaomi finally took the wraps off the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus, its first full-screen model in the mid-range segment. Xiaomi’s concept Mi Mix which was released last year can be credited to be the catalyst that spurred the trend we are presently witnessing in the smartphone industry. However, the Samsung Galaxy S8 played a great role and since the launch of the flagship Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus this year, we haven’t been able to keep count with the stats of models with such design.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus utilises the full-screen design but some might not be too impressed with it because it looks like Xiaomi just slightly reduced the bezels around the screen. However, there is still a considerable and noticeable amount of bezels on all four sides. The large screen form factor makes the reduced bezels quite obvious, though. The Redmi 5 comes in at 5.7 inches HD+ (1440 x 720p) screen while the Redmi 5 Plus has a display size of 5.99 inches with FHD+ (2160 x 1080p) resolution. Both models have a rear design similar to the Redmi 4X. There is a single camera and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor under the camera.

Apart from the full-screen design, one other aspect the Redmi 5 models tickle is their prices. The Redmi 5 starts at just 799 Yuan ($120) for the base 2GBRAM + 16GB storage variant. On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus comes with a bigger 5.99-inch 18:9 display. It is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor and also comes with a selfie soft flash. The Redmi 5 Plus is also listed with a 12MP rear camera and a 17 days standby time which suggests it is coming with a larger battery. Xiaomi is all set to launch its new smartphones Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus tomorrow, i.e. December 7. But, ahead of the official launch, both the devices have been listed on online retailer Aliexpress.

The seller, who goes by the name “Xiaomi Online Store” has listed Redmi 5 in Black and Gold colour options for $199 while the Blue and Pink colour models are priced at $209. On the other hand, the bigger sibling of the smartphone — Redmi 5 Plus has been listed at a price of $249, while the Pink and Blue colour options will cost $10 more.

The seller doesn’t seem to have any connection with Xiaomi. On the listing, there is a disclaimer stating that the phone is still in “pre-sale” stage, hence the specs and pricing listed are official.

We had earlier reported that the smartphones will go on sale from December 12, with Redmi 5 starting at 699 Yuan (approx. $106) and the Redmi 5 Plus start at 999 Yuan (approx. $151). While the smartphones will be launched tomorrow, we already know the specifications of the devices, thanks to several previous leaks.

Recently, Xiaomi revealed an official sneak preview of the upcoming Redmi 5 duo. In the images, we can clearly see the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus sporting full-screen design with narrow bezels. It seems that the devices come with full metallic chassis with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 will feature a 5.7-inch HD+ display with screen resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor, which is the first chipset in the Snapdragon 400 series that is using a 14mm process technology.

The standard variant will come with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The smartphone will be fueled by a 3,300mAh battery.

On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus is expected to feature a 5.99-inch screen that will carry support for FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, the same processor that is powering the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.

It will be available in two variants — 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage. The device will come with a dual camera setup at the back, featuring a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The Redmi 5 Plus will pack a 4,000mAh battery.

A new Xiaomi smartphone with a 5-inch display has been certified by China’s telecoms regulatory body TENAA. The phone was spotted on TENAA yesterday accompanied by a set of cool renders of the device.

The Xiaomi smartphone is identified with the model number MAE136 and strangely packs just a few specs, unlike the usual TENAA listings. Xiaomi is becoming synonymous with large capacity batteries and the new device is listed as having a large 4000mAh battery under its hood. It also has a dimension of 139.24 x 69.94 x 8.65 mm.

Speculations are rife that this could be the Redmi 5, but it only bears a very slight resemblance to the Redmi 4. The device lacks a physical home button under the display and at the rear, there is a fingerprint sensor at the middle while the rear camera is tilted to the top left corner of the phone. The edges of the phone are more rounded than that of the Redmi 4 and there is a unique antenna band design at the back. There is a SIM tray slot at the side of the phone, indicating that it would be a dual SIM phone.

The phone is listed as coming with a host of network bands including LTE. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the processor it features or the camera sensors or memory. Hopefully, some more details would emerge in the near future.
