The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 comes with a Full HD+ display with screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 636 processor. It comes with AI Dual Camera that features a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a secondary sensor of 5-megapixel that captures depth.

The camera comes equipped with features like dual autofocus, EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization), HDR, Burst Mode and Panorama. It can capture amazing AI driven portrait shots by naturally blurring the background. Apart from shooting full HD videos, it can also record 720p slow-motion videos.

On the front side, there’s a 13-megapixel sensor with a Soft-LED flash that also carries support for AI portrait mode. The inclusion of pre-HDR allows it to intelligently detect the background light to capture selfie shots in dim-light conditions by configuring the front LED flash accordingly.

Xiaomi brands itself as an internet company but the Chinese giant is best known for its smartphones which have a durable build coupled with affordable pricing. The company has now made an official entry into Bangladesh and it is three of its latest smartphones that get launched first before any of its numerous products.

Bangladesh isn’t really a large market but Xiaomi phones are fairly popular in the market despite the lack of an official Mi Store there. Hence the decision to make an official entry coordinated by Mi India. Xiaomi India head, Manu Kumar Jain made the announcement on Facebook. The Facebook post reveals that the Chinese smartphone vendor was making its debut in Bangladesh with three of its latest smartphones namely the Redmi S2, Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5.

All three smartphones will be available in 463 Mi authorized offline stores across the country while Daraz Bangladesh will coordinate the sales online via its website – www.daraz.com.bd. However, only the pricing details of the Redmi S2 and Redmi 5 were unveiled in the post. The 3GB + 32GB variant of the Redmi S2 comes with a BDT 14,999 ($178) price tag while the 4GB + 64GB version comes with a BDT 17.999 ($213) pricing. On the other hand, the Redmi 5 will sell for around BDT 13,990 ($165). The online and offline sales will commence on July 26 at 2 PM local time.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 – the phone that costs just about $200 but it has a ton of premium features like an all-metal design, great specs, dual-cameras and much more. You can now get it for just $189.99 from Gearbest. 

As far as design goes, we have a typical Xiaomi phone that is made out of metal and the overall build quality is excellent.

As usual to Xiaomi, you get great specifications for the price. The phone ships with a Snapdragon 636, 3GB RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. In addition, the phone has a beefy 4000mAh battery. 

Screen-on time is always a really subjective method of testing the battery life but it seems that’s the metric everyone likes. I was able to achieve over 11 hours of SOT and my usage involved taking lots of pictures, using the phone with 100% display brightness setting a lot and so on. In other words, battery life is great and you may even achieve better SOT times.

I just love the new Snapdragon 636 chipset since it is both power-efficient and it can handle 3D games very well. I played a lot of different titles like Pubg, Injustice 2, Shadow Fight 3, Asphalt Xtreme and I didn’t see any lag, there were almost no skipped frames and the graphics looked great. Excellent performance for a budget phone.

For the price of about $200, you get a premium-looking phone with excellent display, great specs, very good overall performance, one of the best cameras, a fantastic battery and many extras like the IR blaster, a headset jack, very good loudspeaker and so on.

Overall, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is yet another great budget smartphone. Despite a few minor flaws, I can easily recommend this as one of the best budget smartphones you can buy at the moment.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 recently got a 100 yuan price cut for the 3GB + 32GB variant in China. Right now, the high-end 6GB + 64GB version has also gotten a 300 yuan ($47) price cut which brings its price down to 1,399 yuan (~$218) from 1,699 yuan (~$263). This latest price slash is exclusively on Jingdong (JD.com) and is part of its 6/18 shopping festival to mark the date of its founding. 

The current 1,399 yuan price tag for the Redmi Note 5 6GB + 64GB variant is an interesting offer considering that it places the variant at the same price the 4GB + 64GB variant sells on other e-commerce retail platforms, including Mi Home. The price cut may likely be time limited since the 6/18 shopping festival peaks on June 18. After that, the price will revert back to 1,699 yuan.

Asa reminder, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is a 5.99-inch FHD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) display packing mid-range smartphone with an affordable pricing. The phone comes with a layer of 2.5D curved glass to provide some bit of protection and aesthetics. It equally has a soft LED flash along with the 13MP selfie camera that carries support for AI portrait mode.

My fellow colleagues from Italy started buying Xiaomi phones by importing them from China since the past few years, all the while attracted by their amazing quality-price ratio. But from now on, it won’t be necessary for Italian people to buy Mi devices through online retailers that ship via China. The 4th best smartphone brand in the world has officially landed in the country and it has just announced its first Mi Store in Italy in an official event. At the event, Xiaomi’s VP Wanx Xiang highlighted all the important milestones achieved by the company in the past few years and he also unveiled the products that will be sold at the store.

The store will be officially open from May 26 at 11:30 a.m. GMT 1, at “Il Centro” shopping mall located in Via Giuseppe Eugenio Luraghi, 11 – 20020 Arese (Milan). Three products will be initially sold in the store: Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Redmi Note 5 and Mi Electric Scooter. The first is currently the best Xiaomi flagship. It comes with a ceramic back, an aluminum frame and a tri-bezel-less display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. It is powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset by Qualcomm, up to 8 GB RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage in the configurations available in Italy. The 6/64 GB configuration will cost just €499.90, while the 8/128 GB version will be available for €599.90.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (known as Redmi Note 5 (China) and Redmi Note 5 Pro in other markets) boasts a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display, a Snapdragon 636 SoC, and a 12 MP dual camera setup. It has been launched in two configurations in Italy: 3/32 GB with a price tag of €199.90 and 4/64 GB with a price of €249.90. At last, the Mi Electric Scooter will cost €349.90.

Xiaomi’s European expansion continues: the Chinese company has just made its way in France and in two days it will officially land in Italy with its first physical store in the peninsula. The company has just held a press conference announcing its plans in France and it officially brought three products in the market. The first and the most important product in France is the smartphone Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, which is the best flagship from the company alongside Xiaomi Mi 7 and Mi 8 which will be officially unveiled on May 31. Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is being offered with a price tag of €499,90 for the base variant with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, while it costs €599,90 for the 6/128 GB variant.

It comes with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display which sports a tri-bezel-less design and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it has an octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset by Qualcomm, while on its rear side there is a 12 MP dual camera setup and a fingerprint reader.

The SoC is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 running at a max frequency of 2.45 GHz, while the battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh.

Xiaomi continues its mission to infiltrate the whole of Asia with its products. Not only in Asia, the company says it intends to bring the smartphones, particularly the Redmi Note 5 to more regions around the globe. The Chinese tech giant has officially launched the Mi Mix 2S and Redmi Note 5 in Taiwan. Both models were announced in a ceremony held on Tuesday (May 8) and would go on sale on May 9. The prices in Taiwan is almost similar to what the models cost in China. 

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s is available only in the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and is priced at NT$16,999 (~3,600 yuan). The wireless charger is also available. On the other hand, the three variants of the Redmi Note 5 is available. As for the prices, the 3GB+32GB is priced at NT$5,499 (~1,200 yuan), 4GB+64GB is priced at NT$6,999 (~1,500 yuan) while the 6GB+64GB variant is priced at NT$7,999 (~1700 yuan). The device is available online at Xiaomi Mall and at Xiaomi’s physical store in Taiwan.

As a reminder, the Redmi Note 5 features a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The major marketing feature of the Redmi Note 5 is the AI dual cameras which it packs at the rear.  At the front, the phone features a soft LED flash-enabled 13MP selfie camera that carries support for AI portrait mode. Xiaomi recently updated its mid-range smartphones and up came the Mi 6X which is expected to hit the international market as Mi A2. Before the Mi 6X, the tech giant launched the Redmi Note 5 in China just a couple of months back. Even though the Redmi Note 5 is considerably cheap, it is interesting to note that the 6GB+64GB storage version has presently taken a cut and is available for 1489 yuan ($233) on Gome.

The Redmi Note 5 (China) was launched in three memory versions;  a 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM, 4GB + 64GB version and the 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM version.  The 6GB RAM version was priced at 1,699 yuan (~$268) when it was launched but that is what has taken a price cut right now. The price reduction seems to be a limited offer and so it is likely not going to be permanent. In another light, this price cut may be due to the Mi 6X which is also on sale.

However, this is some interesting news as it indicates that we may soon see the Redmi Note 5 being offered for way less. Even the 4GB RAM version had its price slashed slightly and is now up for 1,259 yuan instead of 1,399 yuan. (~221). Already, the price tag for the 4GB RAM version on GearBest is pretty affordable at  $229 while the 3GB RAM version is offered for $199. We hope to see the price come down some more as it is too close to the pricing of the Snapdagon 660-powered Mi 6X.

The Redmi Note series has always had an ardent fan following, thanks to its extremely value for money profile, giving the best hardware at the lowest price. But Xiaomi’s best sellers often have a less popular competition from Meizu. While it doesn’t look like this year’s Meizu E3 will overthrow Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 (Chinese Ver.), the former could be better than the Redmi model in some areas, especially in the camera department. On paper, the specs of the device looks pretty impressive, hence we decided to pit the Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 vs Meizu E3 to check out which one does a better job at capturing shots in different lighting situations.

In this article, we will compare the two cameras in detail, so we’ll pick out a few samples and talk about each one side by side. This way, you know which one does better in which department. So make sure to read the entire article to know the camera performance of both the handsets.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro vs Meizu E3 Camera: Daylight Performance

In general, both have pretty good cameras for its price. So, daylight photos are going to come out well. On paper, you might think that the 12MP + 20MP sensor on the Meizu E3 might perform better than the 12MP+5MP sensors on the Redmi Note 5 (China). However that’s not really the case in real life, especially in daylight.

Both phones manage to capture good quality pictures with decent levels of detail. However, Xiaomi Redmi Note 5’s camera has a wider dynamic range and it makes many of the samples look better than the ones from the Meizu model. Take the example of the samples down below.

In this sample, the Meizu E3 manages to capture better colors which result in bluer blues and greener greens. Having said that, the dynamic range of the Redmi Note 5 is better and it makes this sample from the Xiaomi model look slightly better than the Meizu one. Clearly, the darker areas in the image look better on the RN5’s sample.

Note that in the areas where there’s ample sunlight, Meizu captures better details. For example, just zoom into the building in the background and check out the outlines of the air conditioning. The Meizu E3 has managed to capture those areas with better detail. However, overall, I like Redmi Note 5 Pro’s sample here because of its wider dynamic range.

In another example, where the dynamic range wasn’t put to test, both managed to do quite well, but Meizu was a bit better in terms of capturing intricate details. For example, in the image of the toy gun below, the Meizu E3 captured slightly better details, which makes its sample look better than the one from the RN5. Just zoom into the image and you’d see the slight difference in the quality.

Portrait mode on both the phones are good, but RN5 seems to be slightly better in this department. We found the Meizu E3’s camera to capture brighter portraits but this makes the colors look washed out at times. On the other hand, the portraits from the RN5 look richer with better blur and focus. Just check out the below samples and you’d know what I’m trying to explain here.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 vs Meizu E3 Camera: Low Light Performance

This is really where Meizu’s camera shines. On most occasions, Meizu E3 managed to capture more saturated samples with less noise. Colors pop out much better than the samples from the RN5 as they look a bit washed out.

For example, let’s consider two cases here.

In the sample of the flower vase above, you can see that the Meizu E3’s sample looks more saturated which makes the yellow background pop out well. We do find the E3 to be a bit nosier than the RN5’s sample but it compensates that with better details. For example, you can see that the flower buds in the sample have better details on the Meizu E3’s sample. So, despite the slightly higher noise, the E3’s sample looks more detailed. Overall, I find the E3’s sample to be better than the one from the RN5.

Let’s take another example and this time at night. The image of the parking lot from the RN5 looks brighter but it comes at the cost of lesser details. On the other hand, the E3’s sample looks richer with better colors and higher details. Just take a look at the cars on the right side of the sample under the street light. E3’s sample shows better details on the cars as compared to RN5. Also, the blacks on the RN5 look a bit washed out. So, E3’s sample looks richer and better than the Redmi Note 5.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 vs Meizu E3 Camera: Conclusion

To conclude, it looks like the Redmi Note 5 does well in daylight and portrait shots. Meizu E3 is also pretty good, but the RN5 might have a slight advantage in many cases due to its wider dynamic range. Things get better with E3 when the sunlight is not that strong, like in the case of the sample of the pink flowers below.

As the light goes down, Meizu E3’s camera starts to shine. In general, the phone manages to capture richer photos with better details. So, when it comes to low light photography, it’s definitely better than Redmi Note 5’s 12MP+5MP dual camera setup at the back.

In short, both the cameras are pretty good. But if you want better low light shots, make sure to spend a little more and get the Meizu E3. However, that’s the only real advantage of the E3’s camera. If low light photography isn’t your primary concern, I would personally go with the RN5 as its camera is pretty good, is cheaper and has a larger battery too.

Apple just launched a special Red coloured edition of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, both which are now available. In a swift move, China’s tech giant Xiaomi has teased a red coloured variant of its latest premium midrange Redmi Note 5 smartphone. Xiaomi is well known as the Apple of China and has a long history of imitating the U.S tech giant. That is not to say Apple doesn’t tap from other companies but we could safely say most of Xiaomi’s products draw inspiration from Apple gadgets and this includes the MIUI  custom UI which resembles iOS in outlook. 

In this case, propping up a red colour variant for the Redmi Note 5 isn’t necessarily an imitation but sharing a teaser of a non-existent variant of its Redmi device immediately after Apple announced its own Red coloured variant reeks of imitation. The renders as shared on the official Redmi phones Weibo page shos the Redmi Note 5 rear coating in red while the front panel still retains its white outlook unlike the iPhone 8 Red special edition whose front panel is black.

Xiaomi‘s Redmi series has been one of its most successful product range. Xiaomi’s international Product and Marketing director, Donovan Sung has revealed that the Redmi Note5 would be launched in Indonesia on April 18. The Xiaomi exec made this disclosure o his official Weibo page. This announcement thus effectively confirms that China’s Redmi Note 5 is the global version. Recall that the Redmi Note 5 was first launched as Redmi Note 5 Pro in India with a slightly different specs line up.

The Redmi Note 5 line-up has been released with different names in the two best markets for Xiaomi: India, and China. In the Indian peninsula, the handset has been announced in two variants: Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. The standard variant is just a re-branded Redmi 5 Plus for the Indian market, while the Pro version is the real new phone. In China, the standard Note 5 is the Redmi 5 Plus, while the Note 5 Pro has been called Redmi Note 5. But keep in mind that it comes with two differences: a slightly different rear camera setup and a better version of the software based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Well, now there is good news for the owners of the Indian Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. A new firmware is available to download for this handset, and it is exactly the same firmware as the Chinese Note 5, based on Android 8.1 Oreo. It is not an OTA update but a firmware leaked on XDA Developers. But it is the MIUI 9.5 China Stable ROM and not a random beta firmware. Besides bringing the Android version number to 8.1 Oreo, this update brings the Project Treble support. According to XDA Developers, a member of their forums has tested the firmware through the Project Treble check app and found out that it is compatible with Project Treble.

In case you do not know, Project Treble can make the code of the Android operating system modular, allowing manufacturers to work directly and exclusively on certain parts of code instead of working on the entire operating system. This makes a lot easier to release software updates, which will be faster and more constant. Only a limited number of smartphones are actually compatible with Project Treble, and now Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro has joined the club. Xiaomi left a couple of fans in India with a red face by launching the Redmi Note 5 in China with somewhat improved specs than the Redmi Note 5 Pro with which it shares the same design. We bring you hands-on/unboxing photos of the Redmi Note 5 sourced from Chinese blog My Drivers.

The photos effectively confirm the device has the same design as the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The features include a similar 5.99-inch FHD+ display packing a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The display is placed under a layer of 2.5D curved glass to provide some bit of protection and aesthetics. The front panel of the Redmi Note 5 includes a soft LED flash-enabled 13MP selfie camera that carries support for AI portrait mode. This is distinctively different from the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s 20MP selfie shooter. The inclusion of pre-HDR allows it to intelligently detect the background light to capture amazing selfie shots in dim-light conditions by accordingly configuring the front LED flash. The front-facing camera can also capture full HD videos.

At the rear, the Redmi Note 5 features an aluminium unibody with an AI-driven dual rear camera arrangement at the top left corner. Xiaomi officially launched the Redmi Note 5 in China on March 16. The Redmi Note 5 was Xiaomi’s first full-screen smartphone that featured a dual camera setup. Apart from that, the Redmi Note 5 is the first smartphone in China to pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor. Apart from the Redmi Note 5, the only model using a Snapdragon 636 chip is the Redmi Note 5 Pro which was launched in India last month.

It is expected that both the Redmi Note 5 and 5 Pro would score the same on benchmark since both pack same processor. Interestingly, that isn’t the case as the AnTuTu benchmark score of China’s Redmi Note 5 has been revealed. Xiaomi shared the AnTuTu score of the SD636-powered device and it surpassed that of India’s Redmi Note 5 Pro. To compare, the Redmi Note 5 Pro scored 112,649 points while the newly launched Redmi Note 5 scored 115,247 points. The gap isn’t too wide to elicit much consideration. But the score edges closer to the 139,140 score of the Snapdragon 660 on AnTuTu. There is still enough gap, though, an indication the SD 660 is more powerful.

The Snapdragon 636 chipset onboard both models pack the same configuration. It is designed using the Octa-core Kyro 260 CPU architecture and is built on a 14nm silicon wafer. The mobile processor is clocked at 1.8GHz and is paired with an Adreno 509 GPU. The new processor also comes with support for Bluetooth 5.0. The CPU is composed of four large Cortex A73 cores and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.6GHz.

Next week will see the launch of the China version of the Redmi Note 5 which is billed to launch on March 16. China’s Redmi Note 5 is said to be the same as the Snapdragon 636-powered Redmi Note 5 Pro which was launched in India last month. A recent Weibo message by Lei confirmed the presence of a Snapdragon 636 processor on the device and even went further to hint that the device will have a 6GB RAM version. Xiaomi’s President Lin Bin had earlier hinted of a camera surprise on the device.

One major question that would be bugging the minds of fans is what price point the device would adopt considering the improved features touted to be onboard. A leaked document has revealed the likely price of the Redmi Note 5 China Edition and it is cheap! The Redmi Note 5 is quoted with a 1,499 Yuan (~$236) price tag which is very close to the RS 13,999 (1,400 Yuan) price tag its contemporary, the Redmi Note 5 Pro (4GB + 64GB) adopted when it launched in India. But the surprise here is that this price is for the 6GB + 64GB version! Isn’t that amazing if it turns out to be true?

Apart from the price, the sheet also contains the specs of the device which includes a 5.99-inch display with 2160 x 1080p (FHD+) resolution. The device packs a dual camera setup at the back and the configuration is given as a 12MP + 20MP sensors while at the front there is a 16MP selfie shooter. The Redmi Note 5’s dual cameras are AI dual cameras while the front camera equally supports AI Beauty feature. This will be the first Redmi series model with such AI capabilities. Other specs include an SD 636 chip, 6GB of RAM, 64GB storage and a massive 4000mAh battery capacity.

In addition, the leaked sheet also contains the price of the Meizu E3 as well as its key specs. The Meizu E3 isn’t in the thousand Yuan category if we are to believe the leaked document. The device is listed with a 2,299 Yuan (~$363) price tag. It comes with a 5.99-inch display with a 1080p resolution which should be an FHD+ resolution. The device will be available in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants while there will be 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage versions. We believe the listed price would be for the topmost 6GB + 128GB variant. Further, the Meizu E3 will be powered by a MediaTek Helio P60 chip and will get its juice from a 3300mAh battery. The E3 is equally a dual-camera phone configured as 12MP + 20MP while for selfies, there is an 8MP sensor.

Xiaomi took the wraps off the much-anticipated Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro on February 14 in India. Now Xiaomi has revealed that the Redmi Note 5 China version will have an artificial intelligent (AI) smart beauty camera. This disclosure was made by Xiaomi’spresident Lin Bin via his Weibo page. The Xiaomi exec did not elaborate but we believe that is the surprise he had earlier hinted will be on the China version of the Redmi Note 5.

Xiaomi touts the Redmi Note 5 Pro which is expected to launch as the Redmi Note 5 in China India’s camera beast. The device features a 12MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and an individual pixel size of 1.25μm. It comes with features like fast autofocus and PDAF.

At the front, the Redmi Note 5 Pro features a 20MP Sony IMX376 camera sensor that is equipped with front LED flash and Beautify 4.0 for capturing for AI-driven beautified photos based on the skin tone of the subject. Xiaomi has optimized the selfie snapper to shoot impressive images in dim-light conditions. We don’t know what other feature Xiaomi would throw in the mix on this China version but the AI feature may likely be on the selfie camera and would offer features such as face recognition as well as recognition of various scenes. Already, the Redmi Note 5 Pro was announced to also have an AI-based Face Unlock feature which would be added at the end of March. So, this could just be it. We really don’t expect something very spectacular from what we had been announced in India but then, you never can tell the surprise Xiaomi is going to spring up.

Several users of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro have reported an audio-related issue with their new device on the Mi Community. Last month, Xioami launched its latest phones in the Indian market — Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. At the time of launch, the devices were launched in two color variants — Midnight Black and Gold.

Recently, it was revealed that the company could launch a new color option, Lake Blue. As it turns out, the company is introducing two new color variants for both devices — Lake Blue and Rose Gold. These both new color options have been listed on online retailer Flipkart as well as company’s official online store.

Further, in a response to a comment on Facebook, the company has promised some surprise in the upcoming sale on 7th March. This hints that the company could start selling all four color models of the phone from 7th March in India.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro went on sale in India for the first time on 22nd February. According to the company, it sold 300,000 units of the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in under 3 minutes.

While the Redmi Note 5 series is currently available in India only, Xiaomi’s Product Marketing Director Zang Zhiyuan had recently confirmed that the company would be launching the Redmi Note 5 in China in March. It has now been confirmed that the devices will be will be unveiled in China on March 16th.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, which is the successor to the Redmi Note 4 — is priced at Rs 9,999 for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant and Rs 11,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant. On the other hand, the Redmi Note 5 Pro costs Rs 13,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB variant and Rs 16,999 for the 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM option.

The Redmi Note 5 is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 625 processor and features a 12-megapixel rear camera with a f/2.2 aperture along with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The Redmi Note 5 Pro packs Snapdragon 636 processor and features dual camera setup of a 12-megapixel Sony IMX486 sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. On the front side, it features a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 camera sensor.

As a reminder, the Redmi Note 5 features a 12MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and an individual pixel size of 1.25μm. It comes with features like fast autofocus and PDAF. At the front, there is an 8MP camera which has been optimized to capture good quality selfie shots in low-light conditions. The front camera is equipped with an LED flash and Beauty 3.0 for snapping enhanced selfie shots. Going by the Xiaomi exec’s statement, we expect the China version of the Redmi Note 5 to come with a different camera specification but what would change is still not known. We expect the model to go official soon in China.  We’ll find out when it does.

The Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has just published a new teaser on Twitter which refers to the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. It has already been confirmed that the most awaited Xiaomi midrange of H1 2018 is launching in India on Valentine’s Day (February 14), but it is speculated that it will just be a re-branded version of the Xiaomi Redmi 5, and it is also expected to arrive in a Prime variant which could be a re-branded Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. The teaser comes with an image attached and it contains the #GiveMe5 hashtag. The image is taken from a teaser video published by Xiaomi India, according to which Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 will have a display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and narrow bezels.

From a drawing showed in the image, the handset does not look identical to the Xiaomi Redmi 5, and this makes us think that we may be talking about a different device. In the teaser video, we can read that “5 lets you see more, 5 gives you the widest perspective, 5 is an all-rounder device, and 5 makes colors come alive”. From these words, it seems that the midrange will have a very wide screen and a high resolution as well. At last, according to the video shared by Flipkart the phone will be officially announced on February 14, just like the previous rumors suggested.

Previous leaks suggested that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is going to be launched with an octa-core Snapdragon 636 chipset by Qualcomm, which is the successor to the power-efficient Snapdragon 630. The SoC is expected to be paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. On the rear side, we expect to see a dual camera configuration with resolutions of 16 and 5 MP, while the selfie camera is rumored to have an 8 MP resolution. Xiaomi is soon expected to launch a new device in the Redmi 5 series — the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. Contrary to previous reports, it almost seems like the Redmi Note 5 smartphone is coming given. However, the company has not yet confirmed anything.

After the phone’s render, the pricing information of the device has now surfaced online. The phone was mentioned among the list of prizes for a contest that the company is hosting on its China MIUI forum. In that forum post, the price of the Redmi Note 5 has been listed at 699 Yuan (approximately $107).

This could mean that the Redmi Note 5, which is expected to make its debut soon, could start at a price of 699 Yuan and go up based on the memory configuration. Notably, this is the first time the Redmi Note 5 smartphone has been mentioned. However, there’s a possibility that this could be a typographical error and the company intended to write Note 5A, which is also priced at 699 Yuan.

Recently, a new render of the phone surfaced online with few differences compared to the earlier image. The new leak shows the phone’s full-screen display surrounded by very thin bezels, much thinner than what we saw on the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

The bottom bezel on the phone is even thinner than that of the Mi MIX 2. Thus, the front-facing camera sensor sits on the top bezel along with the speaker. On the back, there is a dual camera sensor stacked vertically and a fingerprint sensor. It this design turns out to be legit, then the Redmi Note 5 will be amongst the mid-range phone with the highest screen-to-body ratio.

According to the previous leaks, the phone is expected to feature a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s yet announced Snapdragon 632 processor along with 4GB RAM.

Contrary to previous reports which suggested that there will be no Redmi Note 5 phone, we now have the first look at the Redmi Note 5 smartphone, which is currently being tested internally by the China-based company.

The phone is expected to be launched officially by the company in the second half of the year. Interestingly, it is said to be powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 632 processor, which has not been announced yet. The Redmi Note 5 will be the first phone to be powered by Snapdragon 632 SoC.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is expected to feature a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It will carry on the trend of full-screen display with minimal bezels surrounding the display. Recently, Xiaomi jumped the full-screen display bandwagon with the launch of Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

The Snapdragon 632 processor, which will be powering this upcoming smartphone, will reportedly be a toned-down version of the Snapdragon 636 processor from Qualcomm. Its clock speed will be reduced to around 1.8GHz and the accompanying GPU will also take a hit. However, it will come with better support and optimisation for dual camera setup.

As of the memory option, the smartphone will have 4GB RAM. While the internal storage of the device is not yet known, we are expecting it to be 64GB, with support for expanding storage capacity through microSD card. Coming to the camera, the phone will have a dual camera setup at the back, featuring two 12-megapixel sensors.

Earlier, there were reports suggesting that the China-based smartphone manufacturer won’t be launching Redmi Note 5. It was said that the Redmi Note 4’s successor will be the full-screen Redmi 5 Plus which already launched last month.

The Redmi Note 5 smartphone is expected to be priced around 1,599 Yuan, which roughly converts to $245. While we known that the phone will debut in the second half of this year, there is no information about the exact launch timing. Given that the there is still time in phone’s launch, we are expecting to get more information regarding Redmi Note 5 in coming months.

This year has so far been a successful year for Xiaomi and the company would want to continue riding on that wave of success. As the year draws to an end, the Redmi series will likely get some new models launched under it and one of the models is the Redmi Note 5. Although, news has been sketchy surrounding the Redmi Note 5, a newly leaked image purported to be that of the Note 5 has appeared online. The image shows some details of the Redmi Note 5 but unfortunately, we can’t verify its authenticity.

The leaked image only shows the rear view of the purported Redmi Note 5 but even at that it is encased in a protective casing, thus shielding the Mi logo from view which could have authenticated if this really is a Xiaomi model. However, we can still grab a thing or two from the rear aspect and one of such thing is the dual camera setup the device packs at its rear. The dual cameras are aligned in a vertical direction with the LED flash located at the side of the camera. Earlier rumours had tipped the main camera to be composed of a 16MP main shooter and a 15MP secondary sensor. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor situated just beneath the rear cameras.

We must point out that the image looks nothing like the Redmi Note 5A or the Redmi Note 4 which the device will take the reins from. We can’t guarantee the authenticity of the leaked image , though, so take it with a pinch of salt.

UNBOXING

The phone ships in a rather unusual for Xiaomi red box. Inside of it, you can find all the usual stuff, no extras included.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

As far as design goes, the Redmi Note 5a is kind of plain looking and it is very similar to the Redmi 4a. The phone is made entirely of plastic and while it does not look or feel premium, the build quality is excellent.

The 5.5” display sports only 72op resolution but it is still quite sharp for everyday use.

We do have an IR blaster, a notification LED light and 5MP selfie shooter but the buttons are not backlit.

There is no fingerprint scanner on this phone whereas the Prime model has this feature.

As for the camera, we have a 13MP shooter with a single LED flash.

The sound quality via the headset jack is pretty good and the loudspeaker is not bad at all for the price of the phone.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The hardware configuration is not really impressive on the Redmi Note 5a but this is what you have to expect at this price point.

The phone has a Snapdragon 425 chip, just 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. What is awesome, is that there is a dedicated microSD card slot along with a dual-SIM card tray. I think this should become a standard feature on each phone.

The gaming performance is pretty good overall. However, you should expect some skipped frames in some of the 3D games if you play them on the highest graphics settings.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

My Redmi Note 5a shipped with the original Chinese ROM, meaning that I had to install Google Services myself but it takes just a minute to do that. MIUI 8.5 is based on Android 7.1 and if you used any Xiaomi phone before, you will feel right at home as nothing has really changed much. We have the same looks, features, customization options and little tweaks to make the phone look your own.

I’ve installed a lot of apps as usual and I found the phone to be snappy and responsive all the time and that’s the most important thing on any phone.

IMAGE QUALITY

The image quality is quite good considering the fact this is a $120 phone. However, even at this price point, I would love to see more detail and sharpness in the pictures.

The low-light camera performance is quite good but again, this is a budget phone camera after all.

The selfies look nice and clear, I don’t have many complaints here.

The 1080p video is above average as the footage could look sharper but that is the case with most of the phones in this price range.

The 1080p selfie video looks great. The sound recording quality could have been decent but there is a lot of background noise, which is caused by a poor implementation of noise reduction or other stuff.

CONNECTIVITY

As far as connectivity goes, I have no complaints.  Everything, including Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS works fine. Also, the call quality and signal reception are decent.

BATTERY LIFE

A 3080mAh battery performs very well, like on most of the Xiaomi phones. Depending on how you use the phone, you should expect to achieve 8 or 9 hours of screen-on time. Well, these were my results.

The phone supports Qualcomm® Quick Charge 2.0 technology but it ships just with a regular charger. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the device.

CONCLUSIONS

The Redmi Note 5a is another budget phone made Xiaomi. Again, it offers quite a lot of value for the price but honestly, I don’t see any significant upgrades over the last generation models.

I would love to see a slightly better camera and a fingerprint scanner even at this price point but overall,  I still think that the Xiaomi Note Redmi 5a is a solid phone for the price but you can also check out the older Xiaomi phones, as they are very similar to this one.

Xiaomi recently unveiled Japanese cartoon character Hatsune Miku as one of its brand ambassadors a couple of days back and just recently the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Edition was unveiled in China. The device starts selling on Valentine’s day when the price has been pegged.

While we are yet to fully digest the news, a new set of images said to be a fan-designed concept of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Hatsune Edition. Xiaomi has said nothing about a Redmi Note 5, perhaps due to the poor outing of the Redmi Note 4. The Redmi Note 4 has been relaunched in a Snapdragon version and now a Redmi Note 4X variant with touched up features.

However, that doesn’t mean we aren’t expecting to see a Redmi Note 5 anytime soon. But before then, we’ll just have a look at the concept images which looks more like the Sony Xperia in its design style than a Xiaomi smartphone. Just a few weeks after we got wind that the Xiaomi Redmi 4X was in the works, leaked details have also revealed the existence of a new Xiaomi model, most likely a new version of the Redmi Note 4 smartphone. This Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 could be a Snapdragon-powered version of the Redmi Note 4 that was released in August 2016.

The new Xiaomi Redmi Note 4  is said to have appeared on the US FCC website where it received certification. The certification website reveals a basic image of the device, which is similar to the Redmi Note 4. According to the information, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 will sport a 5.5-inch display with a rear fingerprint sensor. The device will also pack a large 4,000mAh battery under its hood with 5v, 2A charging support but no fast charging technology.

The phone could come with a Snapdragon chip like Snapdragon 652. However, at this moment, the specs of this particular are not very clear.

Xiaomi’s Redmi series have a trademark of being thousand yuan smartphones with studded features. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 came as a successor to the highly successful Redmi Note 3 which dominated the domestic thousand yuan smartphone category in China back then, but the Redmi Note 4 was unable to match the success of the Redmi Note 3. Perhaps the new Redmi Note 4 version can re-capture the thousand yuan smartphone category for Xiaomi. It is not known when the device will be released, but popping up at FCC perhaps indicate a release outside China. The device may likely be launched at the MWC 2017.
