If you are searching for a phablet but you have a very low budget, these two handsets may be the best in the market for your needs. Seeing that they are very similar and we can say the same about their price, we think it is appropriate to make a Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Redmi Note 5A comparison, at least basing on specs on the paper, especially because they are entry-level phones.

The most evident difference between Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A is in their displays: the first has a borderless display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, while the second has a classic 16:9 screen. So, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 has smaller dimensions and more pixels, even if the size of the display is almost the same. SoCs are different as well, but Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 and 435 can provide similar performances, even if the first is slightly more powerful.

UNBOXING

The phone ships in a rather unusual for Xiaomi red box. Inside of it, you can find all the usual stuff, no extras included.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

As far as design goes, the Redmi Note 5a is kind of plain looking and it is very similar to the Redmi 4a. The phone is made entirely of plastic and while it does not look or feel premium, the build quality is excellent.

The 5.5” display sports only 72op resolution but it is still quite sharp for everyday use.

We do have an IR blaster, a notification LED light and 5MP selfie shooter but the buttons are not backlit.

There is no fingerprint scanner on this phone whereas the Prime model has this feature.

As for the camera, we have a 13MP shooter with a single LED flash.

The sound quality via the headset jack is pretty good and the loudspeaker is not bad at all for the price of the phone.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The hardware configuration is not really impressive on the Redmi Note 5a but this is what you have to expect at this price point.

The phone has a Snapdragon 425 chip, just 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. What is awesome, is that there is a dedicated microSD card slot along with a dual-SIM card tray. I think this should become a standard feature on each phone.

The gaming performance is pretty good overall. However, you should expect some skipped frames in some of the 3D games if you play them on the highest graphics settings.

BENCHMARKS

USER INTERFACE

My Redmi Note 5a shipped with the original Chinese ROM, meaning that I had to install Google Services myself but it takes just a minute to do that. MIUI 8.5 is based on Android 7.1 and if you used any Xiaomi phone before, you will feel right at home as nothing has really changed much. We have the same looks, features, customization options and little tweaks to make the phone look your own.

I’ve installed a lot of apps as usual and I found the phone to be snappy and responsive all the time and that’s the most important thing on any phone.

IMAGE QUALITY

The image quality is quite good considering the fact this is a $120 phone. However, even at this price point, I would love to see more detail and sharpness in the pictures.

The low-light camera performance is quite good but again, this is a budget phone camera after all.

The selfies look nice and clear, I don’t have many complaints here.

The 1080p video is above average as the footage could look sharper but that is the case with most of the phones in this price range.

The 1080p selfie video looks great. The sound recording quality could have been decent but there is a lot of background noise, which is caused by a poor implementation of noise reduction or other stuff.

CONNECTIVITY

As far as connectivity goes, I have no complaints.  Everything, including Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS works fine. Also, the call quality and signal reception are decent.

BATTERY LIFE

A 3080mAh battery performs very well, like on most of the Xiaomi phones. Depending on how you use the phone, you should expect to achieve 8 or 9 hours of screen-on time. Well, these were my results.

The phone supports Qualcomm® Quick Charge 2.0 technology but it ships just with a regular charger. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the device.

CONCLUSIONS

The Redmi Note 5a is another budget phone made Xiaomi. Again, it offers quite a lot of value for the price but honestly, I don’t see any significant upgrades over the last generation models.

I would love to see a slightly better camera and a fingerprint scanner even at this price point but overall,  I still think that the Xiaomi Note Redmi 5a is a solid phone for the price but you can also check out the older Xiaomi phones, as they are very similar to this one.

Xiaomi launched the budget Redmi Note 5A last month with a build quality which it touts to be of flagship quality. The mobile phone was made available in two versions; a standard version which is powered by a Snapdragon 425 and has 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. There was also a higher variant with Snapdragon 435 and a variant with 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and another variant with 4GB + 64GB storage. All versions come with dedicated microSD slots and dual SIM slot unlike in the past when the second SIM slot double as a microSD slot.

The Redmi Note 5A immediately went on sale the same day it was launched but the top-most variant packing a Snapdragon 435 chip, 4GB + 64GB  memory was not made available for purchase. But all that has changed as Xiaomi put up the 4GB + 64GB variant up on sale and it is priced at just 1199 Yuan (~$180). Xiaomi disclosed that the high-end version would be available for sale on September 15 at 0.00 hours. The sales apparently was a flash sale as the variant is no longer available on Mi Mall.

The tech giant is yet to disclose when next the variant would be available to buy but it obviously would be a while before this variant can be snapped up from online retailers outside of China. But as time goes on, Xiaomi will surely make it available in large quantity as it will be a hot selling product considering the price tag. For now, only the 2GB + 16GB and the 3Gb + 32GB variants are readily available.

Today, Xiaomi announced the latest super low-end smartphone in its Redmi Note series — the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A. We have already covered the launch in detail and you can read more about the phone from here. But here, let’s talk about the Redmi Note 5A variants. There are two major variants announced, a 2GB + 16GB model and a 3GB + 32GB model. The third variant just adds an extra RAM and storage — 4GB + 64GB to the 3GB RAM version.

So, what are the differences between Redmi Note 5A’s Low vs High version? As a matter of fact, quite a lot! In fact, given the differences, you can even consider them to be totally different models rather than just variants. It’s like the Redmi 4A vs Redmi 4, but instead of treating the two as different models, here Xiaomi has differentiated them as variants.

Xiaomi is expected to announce the Redmi Note 5A later today via a live broadcast which would be hosted by Xiaomi’s president Lin Bin. The Redmi Note 5A falls into the tech giant’s budget offering except that it is touted to come with a build quality whose standard is of flagship category. This assertion was made by Lin Bin himself on his official Weibo account who also shared a list of the quality tests the Redmi Note 5A was subjected to.

Among the quality tests listed include dust test, temperature impact test, SIM card plug test and a host of others which ordinarily are tests conducted on its Mi flagship models. The device is also revealed to be coming with a Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Lin Bin had also earlier revealed that the budget device will come with a front flash. In addition, the Xiaomi president also shared a list of suppliers of the different parts used on the Redmi Note 5A and on the list we can see top companies like Qualcomm, Samsung, Texas instruments, Bosch, Corning, and others.

Xiaomi has already revealed that it would be launching the Redmi Note 5A in an online conference that would hold at 19.30 on August 21 in China, with company’s president Lin Bin as the host. The device has over the past month been a frequent visitor on leaks and had even appeared on TENAA but not all the features are known. Today, yet another feature of the Redmi Note 5A has been teased by Xiaomi showing that the budget device will feature a soft flash along with its front-facing camera.

This will likely make the Redmi Note 5A Xiaomi’s first smartphone to come with a front flash. The front flash is a feature which is finding its way gradually into smartphones as the selfie rave spreads. A front flash would enhance illumination and make capturing selfies at night or in dark areas better. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun even shared a picture of the Note 5A shot while the soft flash was on.Apparently, it would be located on the opposite side of the ear piece from where the selfie camera is.

Apart from a selfie flash, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A is expected to feature a 5.5-inch HD display and will be powered by Snapdragon 425 chipset. don’t sulk, the Note 5A is a budget smartphone with a build similar to the Redmi 4A but having a larger display and so, would come with a cheap price tag. The device also features 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. There may be another variant with a Snapdragon 625 chipset as well as 3GB+ 32GB memory and 4GB + 64GB storage. It is expected to pack a 13-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing camera of 5-megapixels as well as a 3,000mAh battery and fingerprint scanner.
