Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics technology brand famously known for its globally best-selling smartphones, has expressed that the company is looking to make a foray into the automotive space with the brand’s first upcoming electric vehicle that is due to be announced in Chinese markets in 2024.

Leaked Xiaomi EV Render

And recently, it was spotted in China’s national patent database that a “Xiaomi Car” patent technology was approved by the country’s regulatory body on April 11, 2023. The patent technology’s name was phrased in quite a direct manner, as the patent tech approved is called “Car (Practical Use)”, and filed by the Xiaomi Car Limited Company, which is a subsidiary of the Xiaomi Group based in Beijing.

The “Xiaomi Car” patent has some very fascinating and exciting details, as shared by ITHome, a tech news organisation in the country. Most notably, the Xiaomi Car will apparently have a transparent display embedded under the glass front windshield, which in simpler terms means you’ll have a transparent TV as your windshield.

Transparent Car Screen Window Prototype by BOE, 2022

This new transparent screen windshield patent technology sounds futuristic, and in the patent description, the tech is said to facilitate drivers to view vehicle information easier and improve driving safety. To illustrate, most vehicles have instrument panels or dashboards in front of the steering wheel, and drivers need to look down to see vehicle information clearly, which is not conducive to safe driving. The Xiaomi Car is slated to have the info you need to be displayed directly on the windshield screen, to keep your eyes on the road whilst displaying important data such as the vehicle speed, notifications, and EV battery charge data to you as well.

According to Xiaomi’s official plan, Xiaomi Cars will officially start mass production in 2024. Recently, Lu Weibing said at a financial report conference that Xiaomi’s car development is progressing completely according to the previously set schedule. According to Lei Jun, the company is “exceeding expectations” and is said to be much ahead of the original schedule set. “Judging from the current situation, I feel that Xiaomi’s car business is still going smoothly according to the schedule,” said Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi.

In his latest Weibo activity, he conducted a QnA on Weibo where he answered the questions of several Xiaomi users in the community.

Lei Jun QnA on Weibo on 24 December 2021

Xiaomi 12 to come in two sizes

Lei Jun clarified in the QnA that moving forward, the Xiaomi flagship series in Winter(Xiaomi 12 series, Xiaomi 13 series and so forth) will announce two types of flagship smartphones for users, one compact flagship for those users who prefer great one-handed usability, and one giant flagship for those who want a bigger battery with a bigger screen for a better multimedia experience. He illustrates with an example that the smaller Xiaomi 12 is meant to rival Apple’s iPhone 13 while the Xiaomi 12 Pro is meant to rival Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro Max.

New Xiaomi Surge Chipset in development

As Xiaomi has successfully developed 3 in-house chipsets, namely the Surge S1, Surge C1 and Surge P1, Lei Jun mentions that Xiaomi will continue its own in-house chips in the future to drive the industry forward. As to whether they will release another Surge chip in 2022, Lei Jun answers that Xiaomi is doing its best in research and development to produce better products in the market as soon as possible.

Reaffirms self-developed smart car will launch in 2024

As for the rumoured Xiaomi self-developed automobile car brand, Lei Jun informs that there has been good news. Xiaomi will launch its first car in 2024, earlier than the projected 2026. As for rumors about Lei Jun leaving the Xiaomi smartphone division once Xiaomi’s Smart Car division has been set up, Lei Jun mentions that smartphones are still the core business of the Xiaomi company and as founder and CEO of the company, he always has a soft spot for smartphones in his heart forever.

Xiaomi 12 will come with MIUI 13 out of the box

As for improvements for the next iteration of MIUI, Lei Jun mentions that the MIUI team has taken much feedback from its users and public, to solve the problems within the user interface and to provide the best software experience for Xiaomi users worldwide. He hopes that everyone can provide their feedback and support to the MIUI team for their much-beloved work throughout these years. Both the Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro will come preinstalled with MIUI 13 in the box.

Now, a new report coming from China says that the firm is looking to expand its team.

Xiaomi has opened up several new positions in the company which include categories like Data Platforms, Vehicle-Mounted Infrastructure, Decision & Planning, Millimeterwave Algorithms, Development Tools, Front-End Development, Embedded Software, High-Precision Maps, Simulation, etc.

Further, the job listing for all the positions shows that the work address is based in Haidian, Beijing. Earlier, the company had said that the Xiaomi Research & Development Headquarters will be located in Beijing but this hasn’t been confirmed by the firm.

The company has set up a new wholly-owned subsidiary to work on electric vehicles and related business. Initially, it plans to invest around 10 billion yuan (~$1.5 billion) but over a period of 10 years, Xiaomi would have invested more than $10 billion for this new category of business.

Lei Jun, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Xiaomi Group, will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer for this new smart electric vehicles entity. It’s likely that the smart car from Xiaomi will be a consumer product and will be targeted at mass market.

The company was earlier rumored to partner with China’s Great Wall Motor Co Ltd and use its factory for building its own electric car. But after the company rejected to partner with Xiaomi, Lei Jun recently visited the Great Wall Motor’s Research and Development Center in China but the outcome of the recent visit has not been revealed yet.

Xiaomi, which is currently the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, has been itching to enter the smart vehicles market for some time. Today, the company has officially announced the commencement of its smart electric vehicle business.

The company has revealed that it is setting up a new wholly-owned subsidiary to work on the electric vehicles and related business. Initially, it plans to invest around 10 billion yuan (~$1.5 billion) but over a period of 10 years, the company would have invested over $10 billion for this new category of business.

Further, it has also been confirmed that Lei Jun, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Xiaomi Group, will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer for this new smart electric vehicles entity.

Recently, at the fifteenth annual meeting of the China Entrepreneurs Forum, Lei Jun had confirmed that Xiaomi has no plans for the release of an electric vehicle for the next three to five years as it plans to focus on its existing products.

A few days ago, it was reported that the China-based smartphone maker could partner with China’s Great Wall Motor Co Ltd and use its factory for building its own electric car. But both the companies had declined to comment on the matter.

Given the past record of Xiaomi, it’s likely that the upcoming smart car from the company will be a consumer product and will be targeted at mass market. We expect more details related to this new business to be revealed at the Xiaomi Mega Launch Part II event where the company is expected to launch the Mi MIX Fold smartphone.
