Xiaomi continues its mission to infiltrate the whole of Asia with its products. Not only in Asia, the company says it intends to bring the smartphones, particularly the Redmi Note 5 to more regions around the globe. The Chinese tech giant has officially launched the Mi Mix 2S and Redmi Note 5 in Taiwan. Both models were announced in a ceremony held on Tuesday (May 8) and would go on sale on May 9. The prices in Taiwan is almost similar to what the models cost in China. 

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s is available only in the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and is priced at NT$16,999 (~3,600 yuan). The wireless charger is also available. On the other hand, the three variants of the Redmi Note 5 is available. As for the prices, the 3GB+32GB is priced at NT$5,499 (~1,200 yuan), 4GB+64GB is priced at NT$6,999 (~1,500 yuan) while the 6GB+64GB variant is priced at NT$7,999 (~1700 yuan). The device is available online at Xiaomi Mall and at Xiaomi’s physical store in Taiwan.

As a reminder, the Redmi Note 5 features a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 3GB or 4GB of RAM. The major marketing feature of the Redmi Note 5 is the AI dual cameras which it packs at the rear.  At the front, the phone features a soft LED flash-enabled 13MP selfie camera that carries support for AI portrait mode. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor as well as a Face ID technology to unlock the device.

The Mi Mix 2s, on the other hand, utilizes a 5.99-inch LCD display having an FHD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The device features an 18:9 display aspect ratio with support for DCI-P3 colour gamut. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Xiaomi’s latest devices – the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus have made their way out of China to neighboring country, Taiwan. This is the first market outside China to sell both phones.

The Redmi 5 launched in Taiwan is the 3GB RAM + 32GB variant and is priced at NT$3,999 (~¥870/$138). On the other hand, the larger Redmi 5 Plus that will be available in Taiwan is the high-end 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM model. It is priced at NT$5,999 (~¥1305/$207).

Sales will commence at 12 noon on January 30. Interested buyers will be able to purchase a unit on the official Mi website, Mi Home stores, and PCHome stores. All color variants will be available for both phones on the Mi store.

On February 1, Taiwanese carriers Chungwa Telecom, Far EasTern, and Taiwan Star will begin selling the Redmi 5 while the Redmi 5 Plus will be exclusive to Far EasTern.

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are the first Redmi phones to come with a full-screen display. The Redmi 5 features a 5.7” HD+ display, a Snapdragon 450 processor, and a 3300mAh battery.

The Redmi 5 Plus squeezes a 5.99” FHD+ display into its metal frame and a Snapdragon 625 and 4000mAh under its hood.

Xiaomi has released a poster that teases a launch event which is scheduled to take place in Taiwan on February 21. This is perhaps a realization of the tech giant’s bid to take its products outside China in order to help rejig its finances and position in the market.

Xiaomi has been experiencing some decline in sales and revenue figures of late, losing out on the top three spots in smartphone shipments in the last few quarters. The company has indicated it would ship more units outside China and even open more physical stores, shifting from the usual online sales model.

Although the poster didn’t specify which smartphone(s) the company would unveil on that day, it is believed that Xiaomi will be bringing the international version of the Redmi Note 4X in Taiwan, as well as the Mi Note 2. Two marvelous smartphones which would no doubt be fast sell outs but we are not entirely sure about that. The Redmi Note 4X was unveiled in china a few days ago with a premium design and well-packed specs lineup for a budget smartphone. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the International version of this great smartphone on February 21 in Taiwan. Watch out!
