While comparisons with Tesla’s Model Y are unavoidable, especially in the Chinese market, the YU7 carves out a space for itself through a unique blend of design, technology, and market positioning.

Here are five reasons why the Xiaomi YU7 isn’t just another car chasing Tesla.

It Has Better Specs Where It Matters

At the launch event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun directly compared the YU7 with Tesla’s Model Y. And on paper, Xiaomi’s car has the upper hand in some key areas.

The YU7 offers more range.

The Standard and Pro models come with a 96.3kWh battery, giving up to 835km and 770km of range (CLTC),

The Max model has a bigger 101.7kWh battery, with a 760km range.
In comparison, the Model Y tops out at 719km.

The YU7 is also faster.

The Max version, with two motors producing 690 horsepower, goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.23 seconds.

That’s faster than any Model Y and even some sports SUVs like the Ferrari Purosangue.

The Standard and Pro versions do 0–100 km/h in 5.88s and 4.27s, which is still very good.

So if you’re looking at numbers alone, the YU7 beats Tesla in both range and speed.

It Charges Faster With 800V Technology

Most electric cars today still use 400V systems, like the Model Y. But the YU7 uses an 800V platform with silicon carbide technology, which charges faster and handles heat better.

Xiaomi says you can add 620km of range in just 15 minutes of charging under ideal conditions. In comparison, the Model Y takes about 27 minutes to go from 10% to 80%.

For people who travel long distances or worry about charging time, this makes a big difference. It means less time waiting and more time driving.

It’s also cheaper

The YU7 starts at ¥10,000 less than the Model Y. But it’s not just about being cheaper.

Even the base model has good enough features for daily use, which makes it a great deal. And if you want more, the Max version adds real upgrades:

A more powerful battery,

Better suspension (for smoother rides),

Much faster performance.

There are also thoughtful touches inside:

An electric front trunk,

Magnetic charging spots for your devices,

A clean, modern interior that feels premium.

These are the features that make the car more enjoyable to live with.

Smart Driving Features Come Built-In

Xiaomi is known for its technology, and the YU7 shows that clearly.

The car comes with:

Nvidia’s latest Thor chip,

Lidar, radar, 11 cameras, 4D mm-wave radar, and 12 sensors—all included as standard.

Unlike Xiaomi’s first car, the SU7, the YU7 includes Xiaomi’s in-house assisted driving system right from the start. The system will be upgraded with Xiaomi’s in-house XLA large model AI, which is expected to receive updates later this year.

Xiaomi is also serious about self-driving tech. It has already invested 5.79 billion yuan in this area and has over 1,800 people working on it.

Stylish Design

The YU7 looks sporty and modern, with a long hood, sloped roof, and coupe-style body. Because of its shape, it gives up a bit of trunk space compared to boxier SUVs.

The YU7 is longer and wider than the Model Y,

But it offers 1758L of cargo space, while the Model Y has 2022L.

Still, Xiaomi believes that buyers will choose good looks over a few liters of trunk space. The folding rear seats help make the most of the available space.

A New Challenge for Tesla in China

It’s too early to say if the YU7 will sell more than the Model Y, but it’s clear that Xiaomi is now one of Tesla’s biggest local competitors.

Sales of the Model Y in China are slowing down, while Xiaomi’s first car—the SU7 sedan—sold over 258,000 units in less than four months.

If the YU7 sees similar success, Xiaomi could quickly become a major player in the EV world. According to Xiaomi, the YU7 has over 200,000 orders placed within five minutes of launch, and deliveries are starting soon.

Xiaomi’s YU7, a premium electric SUV, and the SU7 sedan now offer deep Apple ecosystem integration, catering to the 51.9% of SU7 buyers who use iPhones. Both vehicles support digital keys via iPhones with Ultra-Wideband (UWB), allowing users to unlock their cars effortlessly. Remote control features let drivers activate the air conditioning before entering, using the Xiaomi Auto app, which now leverages the iPhone’s Action Button and Dynamic Island for quick access to vehicle functions.

The infotainment system, powered by HyperOS, enhances Apple Music integration and supports wireless CarPlay, secured with PIN authentication for added safety. Apple Watch users can control select car features directly from their wrist, while iPads mounted on rear-seat extensions via the “Xiaomi Car Expansion Screen” app manage multimedia and climate settings.

Xiaomi YU7 interior

This mirrors Xiaomi’s broader vision of cross-platform compatibility, with CEO Lei Jun emphasizing a “connected and collaborative” tech future. The YU7’s 1.1-meter HyperVision display and 25-speaker Dolby Atmos system further elevate the experience, complementing CarPlay’s navigation and entertainment features like Apple Maps and Spotify.

Xiaomi’s YU7 and SU7, with their deep Apple ecosystem integration, set a new standard for EV connectivity, blending iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad functionality into a seamless driving experience. Will Xiaomi’s open approach challenge rivals like Tesla and BYD? This fusion of ecosystems could redefine the future of smart mobility.

The Xiaomi YU7 continues the brand’s focus on aesthetic appeal, evolving the design language seen in the SU7 while establishing its own bold identity. It blends refined styling with potent performance, generous interior space, and advanced comfort features.
An all-new electric-flush door handle system ensures a seamless body contour, retracting when the vehicle is in motion and extending automatically upon approach with the key. Aerodynamic efficiency is paramount, with 10 through-flow air channels, 19 optimized vents, a hollowed spoiler, and an active grille system, contributing to an impressive drag coefficient of Cd 0.245.

Intelligent Cabin Experience and Powerful Capabilities

Inside, the Xiaomi YU7 champions a “Dual-Zone Surround Luxury Cabin” philosophy, offering a harmonious blend of technology, luxury, and comfort. A standout feature is the Xiaomi HyperVision Panoramic Display, an industry-first mass-produced triple Mini LED screen array. This system projects information onto the lower windshield area, creating an expansive 1.1-meter ultra-wide display with high resolution and brightness, adapting intelligently to different user scenarios. Complementing this, a remote-control panel provides passengers with effortless command over car functions, navigation, and entertainment.

Despite its dynamic exterior, the YU7 offers remarkable interior spaciousness, thanks to advanced battery technology, providing ample headroom and legroom. It provides a total storage capacity of 1,970 liters, including a 141-liter front trunk and a 678-liter main cargo area.
Xiaomi has officially announced its 15th anniversary launch event scheduled for May 22 at 7PM (local time). Shared through multiple official channels including company founder Lei Jun, the event promises a lineup of high-impact products. Here’s a look at what to expect from the upcoming launch event.

Xiaomi Xring O1, Xiaomi 15s Pro, Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra, incoming

XIaomi May 22 launch event

The event will see the arrival of Xiaomi’s self-developed mobile chip, the Xring 01, a milestone product that signals the company’s re-entry into the mobile SoC space. The chip will debut inside the new Xiaomi 15S Pro, a performance-focused flagship phone.

Benchmark figures show the chip runs on a 10-core CPU layout (2 x 3.9GHz + 4 x 3.4GHz + 2 x 1.89GHz + 2 x 1.8GHz) and uses the Immortalis-G925 GPU. It scores 3,119 in single-core and 9,673 in multi-core Geekbench tests, placing it alongside Dimensity 9400 and Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Also launching is the Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra, a 14-inch premium tablet with up to 120W wired charging. It supports a 3.2K resolution display with LTPO tech and advanced multi-window features aimed at professionals. The device could be equipped with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chipset.

Xiaomi will also unveil Xiaomi YU7, the company’s first SUV. It is expected to feature a Saturn-ring style tail-light and dimensions of 4999mm x 1996mm x 1600mm. It includes high-speed performance and dual-motor options with peak output up to 390 horsepower.

Xring 01 is built with 3nm process

The main focus of the launch is undoubtedly the Xring 01 chip and the Xiaomi 15S Pro, the first phone powered by it. According to Xiaomi, this chip represents the company’s renewed ambition in the mobile chip market. Designed specifically for flagship-level smartphones, the development of the Xring 01 began after Xiaomi revived its SoC efforts in 2021.

The chip is part of a larger 10-year strategy, backed by an investment of at least 50 billion Yuan (approximately $6.9 billion). As of April 2025, Xiaomi has already invested over 13.5 billion Yuan (roughly $1.9 billion) into chip research and development. This significant financial commitment highlights Xiaomi’s long-term vision to become a serious player in semiconductor innovation.

Xiaomi’s upcoming sporty crossover, the YU7, is shaping up to be a formidable contender in the EV market, with recent certifications from China’s MIIT platform revealing a couple of impressive details. The YU7, set to launch between June and July, will reportedly offer a top-tier trim with a remarkable 770 km range.

The YU7 inherits its design language from the Xiaomi SU7

This crossover features sleek “teardrop” headlights, a streamlined front bumper, and an aerodynamic profile. Semi-concealed door handles, frameless mirrors, and a ducktail spoiler with distinctive “halo” taillights further enhance its modern aesthetic. Measuring 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,608 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase, the YU7 promises ample interior space for comfort.

On the inside, the YU7 breaks away from traditional designs with an ultra-wide dashboard screen that displays all essential driving information, including range, speed, and navigation. As a cherry on top, a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor hints at advanced autonomous driving capabilities. However, versions without LiDAR will still feature self-driving technology.

The YU7 will be available in single and dual-motor configurations. The top-tier dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant delivers a combined 508 kW (691 horsepower), which enables a top speed of 253 km/h. A lower-powered dual-motor option offers 365 kW, while the single-motor rear-wheel-drive version produces 235 kW and reaches 240 km/h.

Battery options include a 96.3 kWh NMC pack with ranges of 770 km, 760 km, and 675 km, and a larger 101.7 kWh NMC pack offering 670 km, 750 km, and 760 km. An LFP battery is also reportedly available for the single-motor variant.

The starting price of the Xiaomi YU7 crossover is expected to be around RMB 250,000, which is roughly around USD 34,562.

Redmi Turbo 4 Pro incoming in April

Xiaomi’s forthcoming devices officially confirmed

One of the biggest announcements was the upcoming launch of a new Redmi smartphone, expected next month. This device, believed to be the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro, is designed to cater to young consumers seeking high performance, quality, and extended battery life. The phone is rumored to feature the next-generation Snapdragon 8s Elite chipset, which could make it one of the first phones to run on this powerful new processor. Expect excellent performance, a long-lasting battery, and overall improved user experience.

Redmi K80 Ultra and next Xiaomi Civi phone confirmed

In addition to the Turbo 4 Pro, Mia revealed that Xiaomi is working on the Redmi K80 Ultra, with a release expected earlier than last year’s model. While the Redmi K70 Ultra launched in July 2024, the K80 Ultra could be unveiled in May or June. This device is likely to feature the Dimensity 9400 Plus chipset, which will also power future models from Vivo, Oppo, and iQOO.

For fans seeking a balanced flagship experience, the Xiaomi Civi series will also see a significant update. The upcoming Xiaomi Civi 5 Pro is expected to offer major improvements, all while maintaining its sleek and compact design. This model may include the Snapdragon 8s Elite SoC, delivering top-tier performance in a premium, smaller package.

Furthermore, Xiaomi is preparing to launch a new tablet aimed at users who demand both portability and power. This device is rumored to be the Xiaomi Pad 7s Pro, which was recently spotted at China’s 3C certification with a 120W charger.

Redmi K90 Series and Xiaomi YU7

Mia also mentioned that Xiaomi is working on the Redmi K90 series, focusing particularly on a major upgrade to its imaging capabilities. However, since the K90 is still in early development, she advised fans to focus on the Redmi K80 lineup for now. Based on Xiaomi’s usual release schedule, the K90 series could be announced in November 2025.

Finally, Xiaomi’s YU7 model, which is being hyped as a Tesla Model Y killer, is undergoing road testing. The test will be led by Xiaomi’s top executive, Wang Teng Thomas, with reports suggesting the device will debut in China in July.

Interestingly, there was no mention of Xiaomi’s foldable segment during the live broadcast. According to reports, the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2, which is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, is slated for a May release. However, it appears that there will be no new book-style foldable device from the brand this year

If you’re into electric vehicles, you’ve likely heard about Xiaomi‘s foray into the automotive world with the SU7 sedan. Now, the Chinese tech giant is upping its game by introducing the YU7, an all-electric SUV that’s set to hit the market in the summer of 2025.

The YU7 was unveiled quite literally under the regulatory spotlight. As part of the homologation process with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Xiaomi had to reveal key specs and the first official images of the YU7.

It’s a process that often irks automakers because it spills the beans on models before they’re ready to be officially launched, but for us, it’s a treasure trove of information. Here’s what we know about the YU7.

Design and build

It’s an all-electric SUV, stretching to 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and standing 1,600 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. This model isn’t playing around in terms of power either. It’s equipped with dual electric motors — one at the front with 220 kW and another at the rear with 288 kW, offering a combined output of 508 kW or 681 hp. That’s enough to push this SUV to a top speed of 253 km/h, which is quite the performance for an SUV.

The energy for the SUV comes from a lithium NMC battery supplied by CATL, though specifics on the battery’s capacity are still under wraps. Given Xiaomi’s partnership with CATL, we can expect some impressive range figures, although exact numbers will have to wait until closer to the launch.

Design-wise, the YU7 resembles the sleek aesthetics of the SU7 sedan. The YU7’s design has been teased with images shared by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun on Weibo which shows a vehicle that’s both sporty and modern.

Building on Success

The YU7 will be another offering from Xiaomi that will build on the success of the SU7 sedan. Launch in March for a starting price of 215,900 yuan (around $29,700), it has already surpassed 100,000 deliveries by mid-November 2024. And Xiaomi is aiming for 130,000 units by year’s end.

The SU7 was not only a commercial success, it also garnered praise from unexpected quarters. Ford CEO Jim Farley was so impressed after driving an SU7 that he reportedly didn’t want to return it.

Xiaomi YU7 has competitors to succeed

Unlike the SU7 which is a sedan, the upcoming YU7 will dive into a different arena — the burgeoning electric SUV market in China, where it will directly challenge the likes of Tesla’s Model Y.

The Model Y starts at 249,900 yuan in China, so it’s likely that Xiaomi will keep its price close to Tesla’s offering.

Interestingly, despite the homologation revealing all, Xiaomi has decided to keep the YU7 under wraps. However, the CEO has confirmed that the launch will happen in June or July 2025.

This timeline might seem a bit delayed given the regulatory clearance, but Lei Jun sees this as an opportunity for extended testing. He mentioned in a Weibo post that removing the camouflage early would allow for more “comprehensive, detailed, long-term and large-scale testing” to ensure the vehicle’s quality.

Context in the Tech-Driven Car Race

Xiaomi’s progress in the EV space is particularly noteworthy, especially compared to tech giants like Apple and Sony. Apple’s long-rumored car project has yet to yield tangible results, and reports suggest the company has scaled back its ambitions.

On the other hand, Sony has partnered with Honda to develop the Afeela EV, expected to debut in the coming years.

Xiaomi, however, has moved faster, with the SU7 and now the YU7 marking tangible entries into the market. Xiaomi isn’t alone either, though. It has teamed up with CATL for batteries and BAIC for manufacturing.

Challenges Ahead

Xiaomi has stiff competition in the EV market. Tesla is a dominant player, not just globally but also in China, where the Model Y SUV is among its top sellers. Then there are domestic rivals like BYD and Nio which have their own offering of performance-oriented electric SUVs.

So for Xiaomi, the price of the YU7 will be a crucial factor. Xiaomi has a history of undercutting competitors in the smartphone market, but building EVs is inherently more expensive, and achieving competitive pricing while maintaining quality will be another challenge for the brand.
