Qualcomm recently confirmed that it will hold the 2025 Snapdragon Summit in September this year. This gave birth to rumors that the Xiaomi 16 series equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chip will debut by the end of the said month. Xiaomi’s upcoming 16 series smartphones are making headlines again, with official confirmation from Xiaomi and Qualcomm shedding light on the chipset strategy for their next-generation devices. The announcement not only dispels ongoing speculation but also provides a clearer picture of how Xiaomi will integrate its self-developed Xring chip alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs.

Xiaomi 16 series will debut with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2

Qualcomm’s press release

Xiaomi and Qualcomm have signed a new multi-year partnership agreement, reaffirming their long-standing collaboration. Under this agreement, Xiaomi will continue to launch multiple flagship models featuring Snapdragon 8 series chipsets. As part of the arrangement, the Xiaomi 16 will be among the first to ship with the next-gen Snapdragon 8-series chip (Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 – tentative name), expected later this year. This confirms that Xiaomi is not breaking ties with Qualcomm, as previously rumored, but is instead reinforcing its alliance for future product generations.

CEO Lei Jun remarked that Qualcomm remains a key partner in Xiaomi’s global growth story, emphasizing their shared commitment to high-quality, innovative products. Xiaomi aims to strengthen its position in the premium smartphone segment by combining Snapdragon’s performance with its own hardware-software synergies.

Xring may power Xiaomi 16S Pro and Xiaomi 16 Ultra

The Xiaomi 15S Pro, launching tomorrow in China, will debut with the company’s in-house Xring O1 chip. It’s likely that its successor will continue this trend, integrating Xiaomi’s own chipset. While the standard Xiaomi 16 and 16 Pro will feature the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 processor, Xiaomi’s in-house SoC, however, is expected to be reserved for select high-end models like the Xiaomi 16S Pro and Xiaomi 16 Ultra.

This selective deployment suggests that the Xring chip is designed to complement, not replace, Snapdragon solutions. As production capacity for Xring is still ramping up, Xiaomi will continue relying on Snapdragon for volume flagships.

After years in the making, this chip marks a significant milestone for Xiaomi, positioning them as the fourth global smartphone brand and the second in China to develop its own System on Chip (SoC). So here’s everything you need to know about this proprietary chipset.

XRing O1 is built with 3nm process

A Decade in the Making

The development of the XRing O1 represents a substantial investment and commitment by Xiaomi to enhance its technological capabilities. As per recent reports, the chip has been in development for 10 years now. In other words, this is a long project that showcases Xiaomi’s efforts in getting more control over its supply chain and optimizing its products.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The XRing O1 is apparently built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm node. The advanced process suggests that the Chinese tech giant aims on offering performance, whilst not compromising on power efficiency. It is an octa core processor with a 1+3+4 configuration:

One high-performance Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.2GHz.

Three Cortex-A725 cores at 2.6GHz.

Four Cortex-A520 efficiency cores at 2.0GHz.

For graphics, the XRing O1 uses an Imagination Technologies IMG DXT72 GPU clocked at 1.3GHz. This GPU is rumored to outperform the Adreno 740 found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, indicating a strong emphasis on gaming and visual performance.

Performance Benchmarks

While the Xring has yet to be seen in action in real world tests, a recent GeekBench sighting hinted at its horsepower. However, the popular benchmarking platform painted a slightly different picture regarding the core configuration and GPU:

2x high-performance cores at 3.90GHz

4x performance cores at 3.40GHz

2x efficiency cores at 1.89GHz

2x additional efficiency cores at 1.80GHz

GPU: Mali-G925 Immortalis

The Xring O1 also managed to get a score of 2413 points in the single core test and 8068 points in the multi core test.

So what phone will it debut on?

The XRing O1 will debut in the Xiaomi 15S Pro, a which is an upcoming flagship phone designed for performance. This model was spotted in China’s 3C certification, and it was later confirmed by the brand’s official teasers. As Xiaomi moves to its in-house smartphone chip, it might be able to offer more competitive pricing on this device or in future models as it bypasses established chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Xiaomi has officially announced its 15th anniversary launch event scheduled for May 22 at 7PM (local time). Shared through multiple official channels including company founder Lei Jun, the event promises a lineup of high-impact products. Here’s a look at what to expect from the upcoming launch event.

Xiaomi Xring O1, Xiaomi 15s Pro, Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra, incoming

XIaomi May 22 launch event

The main focus of the launch is undoubtedly the Xring 01 chip and the Xiaomi 15S Pro, the first phone powered by it. According to Xiaomi, this chip represents the company’s renewed ambition in the mobile chip market. Designed specifically for flagship-level smartphones, the development of the Xring 01 began after Xiaomi revived its SoC efforts in 2021.

The chip is part of a larger 10-year strategy, backed by an investment of at least 50 billion Yuan (approximately $6.9 billion). As of April 2025, Xiaomi has already invested over 13.5 billion Yuan (roughly $1.9 billion) into chip research and development. This significant financial commitment highlights Xiaomi’s long-term vision to become a serious player in semiconductor innovation.
