YouTube is expanding its Premium Lite pilot to India, giving viewers a lower-cost option to watch most videos without ads. The plan is priced at ₹89 per month.

Premium Lite works across phones, laptops, and TVs. It removes ads from most videos but does not cover everything. Ads will still appear on music content, Shorts, and when users search or browse. Those who want ad-free music on YouTube and YouTube Music, along with offline downloads and background play, will need the full YouTube Premium plan.

The rollout comes as YouTube Music and Premium together have reached more than 125 million subscribers worldwide, including trial users. YouTube says Premium Lite is meant for viewers who mainly want ad-free video streaming, while keeping the price more affordable than the full plan.

Since launching YouTube Music and Premium, the company has been adding options to suit different viewing needs. Premium Lite continues that approach and also creates more ways for creators and partners to earn revenue.

YouTube says the platform offers a wide mix of content, including dramas, podcasts, and live gaming streams. With Premium Lite, users in India can watch most of this content without interruptions while choosing a plan that fits their budget.

The service is being rolled out now and will be available across India in the coming weeks.

The feature appears to be very similar to Twitter’s Community Notes Feature

The pilot program is currently limited to a select group of users in the United States who will be invited via email or through YouTube Creator Studio. To participate, users must have an active YouTube account in good standing. During this initial phase, YouTube will rely on “third-party evaluators” to assess the helpfulness of submitted notes. This feedback will be used to train the system and ensure that only the most valuable contributions are displayed publicly.

Once the pilot expands beyond the initial group, viewers will be able to rate the helpfulness of Community Notes using a three-tier system: “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful.” They can also provide specific reasons for their ratings, such as whether the note cites credible sources or is written in a clear and concise manner.

A unique “bridging-based algorithm” will determine which notes appear under videos. This algorithm prioritizes notes that receive positive ratings from a diverse range of viewers, even those with differing viewpoints. TikTok says it is testing 60-minute video uploads on its platform, after testing 30-minute video uploads in January this year. The 60-minute video upload feature is currently available to a group of TikTok users in some selected markets. The company however says that it doesn’t have any immediate plans to make this available to all users.

The new moves mark a shift from TikTok’s original strategy in which it created a niche for short video uploads. Originally, the app only allowed users to upload 15-second videos, with the threshold being increased severally. It is quite evident that TikTok has slowly embraced the option of a longer content upload. This duration restriction is not there on the foremost media content platform YouTube.

TikTok says that its creators have continued to yearn for greater width to allow them to tell their messages more poignantly if needed. Some content such as cooking demos, educational lesson plans, comedy, and much more, may require more than the current limit to pass the message. The arrangement will also allow full-episode TV shows to be uploaded on the platform.

While TikTok had encouraged its content creators to tell the viewers to go to the next part of the story, it is not always the case that the viewer gets the second part. In such scenarios, the overall message is lost because of seemingly incomplete content. The increased time limit therefore allows creators the opportunity to experiment with new or expanded types of content with greater flexibility. TikTok may be hoping to draw creators to post their longer content on YouTube to also post it on TikTok.

TikTok has also been tinkering with other features to enhance the user experience on the app. It has been reportedly testing a horizontal full-screen mode and video scrubbing thumbnails. It currently features the fast-forwarding function on the app, allowing the user to fast-forward a video by holding down the right side of the video. This person is wanted for money laundering and running an illegal money transmitting business. To find him, authorities had undercover agents to send out tutorials via YouTube on mapping via drones and augmented reality software. You might think this is normal for catching criminals. But, the videos were public and for example on of them was watched by over 30,000 people.

That means the data of potentially tens of thousands of users was exposed through these videos, which were accessible to anyone, including you. This tactic raises questions about the balance between online investigations and user privacy. Unfortunately, Google had to disclose those data. That’s precisely why if privacy of personal data matters to you, the only thing you can do is to live in a hut deep in the forest.

In an unexpected move, Xiaomi is removing that popular feature. Users will be looking for the background video playback option that came with MIUI 12 and will no longer be available in HyperOS. The Chinese brand has decided to remove it, probably after Google’s warning.

Because the ability to play videos in the background with the screen off was only available for premium users. This feature, which previously existed in applications such as YouTube, even users without a premium subscription could easily listen to the music they wanted in the background.

Xiaomi will gradually remove this feature from the video toolbox with new updates. The video toolbox was highly praised for its useful features and was added to MIUI 12. Now in MIUI 15 ( HyperOS as Xiaomi calls it), there will be no option to play videos with the screen off. Those who still want to use this feature will have to subscribe to YouTube’s Premium subscription.

Attention users of MIUI 12, MIUI 13, MIUI 14 and HyperOS (MIUI 15) interface! If you upgrade the security app to the above-mentioned versions, the ability to play videos with the screen off will be disabled. This is not a problem and is officially stated by the brand itself.

ByteDance is preparing TikTok to take on YouTube by bringing 30-minute-long videos to the platform. This marks a departure from the platform’s original format of short-form videos. The new feature is spotted on the iOS Beta App and Android App too in the UK by social media consultant Matt Navarra.

TikTok is widely known for its short videos. It initially started with 15 seconds and later updated the video limit to a minute. In recent years, considering the demand, the limit was revised again and expanded to three minutes, and later to 10 minutes. Before the 30-minute video limit, the company had already tested the 15-minute videos, but the limit is currently not effective on TikTok.

TikTok’s 30-minute Limit Coming Soon

Now, to attract more users and content creators to its platform, Tiktok is testing a 20-minute limit. It could be seen as a direct competition for YouTube, which allows any duration of video. This expansion could open up opportunities for posting full episodes of TV shows and other long-form content on TikTok.

Being a platform popular for its short videos, TikTok will offer the ability for users to fast-forward videos by tapping and holding the right side of the video. A similar feature was seen when TikTok debuted the 15-minute videos a few months ago. Moreover, TikTok has already prepared for longer videos with the recent addition of horizontal full-screen mode.

It would be interesting to see how the users react to the long videos on the platform, which is popularly known for short videos. However, it remains uncertain when or if this feature will be widely launched for all users.

Back in September, Google announced it would be shutting down its dedicated podcast app, Google Podcasts. Now, they’ve confirmed the official date: April 2024. This move follows the inclusion of podcasts into YouTube back in 2022, streamlining Google’s audio offerings under one roof.

Google launches migration tool ahead of Podcasts shutdown

To assist users with the transition, Google has launched a new migration tool. This tool allows users to easily transfer their existing podcast subscriptions from Google Podcasts to YouTube Music. Currently, the migration tool is only available for users in the United States but is expected to be rolled out globally soon.

Google says the new migration tool will appear within the Google Podcasts app in the coming weeks which can be accessed through a banner at the top of the screen. Additionally, step-by-step instructions on the migration process will be available on Google’s support website.

While the Google Podcasts app itself will cease to function in April, US users can still listen to their podcasts within the app until March 2024. Additionally, both migration and subscription export will be available until July 2024, allowing ample time for everyone to make the transition.

However, if you’re wary of Google’s history of shuttering podcast apps (a nod to the discontinued Google Listen and Google Play Music Podcasts), you have another option. You can export your subscriptions as an OPML file at podcasts.google.com/settings until August 2024. This allows you to import them into a different podcast app of your choice.

These are all the important dates to remember for Google Podcasts shutdown:

• March 2024: Last month to listen to podcasts within the Google Podcasts app.
• April 2024: Google Podcasts app officially shuts down.
• July 2024: Deadline to migrate or export subscriptions.

In an effort to entice users to subscribe to its paid Premium service, YouTube is rolling out a new feature called Playables. Playables is a standalone section within the YouTube app or desktop website that allows users to play arcade games without having to download anything.

YouTube launches Playables for premium users

Upon entering Playables, users are presented with two tabs: Home and Browse. The Home tab displays a list of recently played games and a curated selection of popular titles. The Browse tab, on the other hand, offers a wider range of games, currently numbering around 37.

The key selling point of Playables is that all games are playable directly within the YouTube app or website, eliminating the need for downloads. This makes it incredibly easy for users to jump into a game without any hassle.

Currently, Playables is in beta testing and is only accessible to a limited group of Premium subscribers. However, YouTube intends to gradually expand access to Playables over the coming months.

The initial selection of games on Playables includes popular titles like Angry Birds Showdown, Brain Out, and Daily Solitaire. While the current library is relatively modest, YouTube is expected to add more games in the future.

YouTube is not the first streaming service to offer a game arcade to its subscribers. Netflix introduced its own game arcade in November 2021, but it has not gained significant traction. It remains to be seen whether Playables will fare better than Netflix’s game arcade.

YouTube plans to continue offering Playables until March 28, 2024, after which the company will assess its performance and make a decision about its future. If Playables proves to be popular, it could become a permanent fixture on the platform.

A privacy consultant named Alexander Hanff has filed a criminal complaint against YouTube in Ireland for using scripts that detect and restrict ad blockers on the platform. 

Hanff alleges that YouTube’s use of these scripts violates EU law, which requires consent for non-necessary interactions with users’ devices. He also argues that the scripts amount to spying on EU citizens.

“I consider YouTube’s script to be spyware — aka surveillance technology, as it is deployed without my knowledge or authorization to my device for the sole purpose of intercepting and monitoring my behavior (whether or not ads load in my browser or are blocked by an ad blocker),” he told The Register.

“I chose to go down the criminal complaint route because historically, EU regulators have been absolutely terrible at enforcing the ePrivacy Directive,” he added.

Hanff’s complaint comes on the heels of YouTube’s recent decision to block ad blockers on the platform. The company has said that the move is necessary to protect its revenue from advertising. However, many users have criticized the decision, arguing that it infringes on their privacy and right to control their online experience.

In addition to the criminal complaint, Hanff has also filed a civil complaint against YouTube with the Irish Data Protection Commission. The regulatory authority is currently investigating the matter.

Now, the circumstances have “equalized” for everyone once again. Here are the details…

YouTube Premium Price Hike to Go Into Effect in November

Starting November 1, 2023, YouTube Premium prices are increasing in the following countries:

• Argentina
• Australia
• Austria
• Chile
• Germany
• Poland
• Turkey

Existing subscribers will start to see the new pricing with their next billing cycle. However, in Australia, existing subscribers will be able to keep their current pricing for at least three more months. YouTube says that the price increase is necessary to “continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.” YouTube also says that it wants to help creators earn more money, and that increasing the price of Premium will help it do that.

The price increase will make YouTube Premium more expensive for users in the affected countries. However, users who value the features that Premium offers, such as ad-free viewing and background play, may still find that it is a good value. YouTube has recently taken a more aggressive stance against ad blockers. In some cases, YouTube has even blocked users from watching videos if they have an ad blocker installed. YouTube confirms crackdown on ad-blockers

YouTube started blocking ad-blockers earlier this year as a part of its small experiment. The popular video-sharing platform is now intensifying its global effort to take a stance against the practice of blocking ads via various tools. Despite receiving backlash from users during the small experiment, YouTube aims to convince users to either go for a Premium subscription or disable ad-blockers. 

In a statement to The Verge, YouTube Communications Manager Christopher Lawton said “The use of ad blockers violates YouTube’s Terms of Service. Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube.”

If a user uses ad-blockers, they will get a notice that says “video playback is blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled”. Users will also be prompted to allow ads or try YouTube Premium. Additionally, the video-sharing platform will warn that the video player will be blocked entirely if users continue to use ad-blockers after three videos. 

YouTube’s stance on ad blockers is understandable considering that ad revenue is the biggest source of revenue for the platform. The company introduced 30-second unskippable ads to its TV app earlier this year and also experimented with longer but less frequent ad breaks on TV.

The most used Browser – Chrome is receiving new features that will enhance the user’s ability to multitask. Developers are working on a new feature in Chrome that will automatically play YouTube videos in Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode once the user switches tabs. The video will automatically move to the corner and will keep playing until the user pauses it.

The Auto PiP feature is currently present in the development and may the part of the next Canary build. It may debut on the Stable build by the end of this year. It is quite a helpful feature offering more convenience to the user.

Auto PiP feature will turn into a productive feature under various circumstances. For Eg: It can be helpful to watch a tutorial video in the corner while performing the steps in another tab or window.

This CL adds a draft of the allow / block content setting UI for AutoPiP windows. It doesn’t try to match any UI mocks; it just adds
some scaffolding to use while we build out the functionality and the UI itself. Right now, it’s triggered for any document PiP window if blink feature that corresponds to AutoPiP is enabled, even for pip windows that aren’t opened because of AutoPiP. Video PiP windows are never affected, though that will be added in the future.

The feature will be compatible with Windows 11, Windows 10, macOS, and ChromeOS. A similar feature is already present in Microsoft Edge Canary which is labeled as  “Automatically turn on picture in picture for video sites.” 

Apart from the Auto PiP feature on Chrome, Google is working on several other enhancements that will surely enhance Chrome’s feature set. The developers are working on a new incognito mode for better “Tracking Protection”. Some design changes related to the Material theme are also in the works and will soon see the light of day via a new update.

Instead of peppering viewers with frequent but short ad breaks, YouTube is testing fewer, longer breaks on these platforms, often referred to as connected TV or CTV experiences.

The pivot stems from some intriguing viewer behaviors and preferences. YouTube found that the average U.S. CTV viewer is committed to their content for at least 21 minutes—about the duration of a typical sitcom. Research also suggests that a substantial 79% of viewers would rather endure a long, one-time ad break than have their video interrupted multiple times.

This “fewer but longer” ad strategy appears to be inspired by UK television’s approach to advertising, which often leaves viewers with ample time to fetch a cup of tea. In contrast, American TV shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” are infamous for short, frequent interruptions that make you wish you had that pause button.

While YouTube has not fully detailed how it intends to implement this, questions abound. Will a four-minute break replace four one-minute breaks? And crucially, will the total ad time per hour increase?

It’s clear YouTube is rethinking how ads fit into our binge-watching sessions, aiming to minimize disruptions and elevate our CTV experiences. Whether this will prove to be a win-win situation for both advertisers and viewers remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: YouTube is open to aligning its digital platform with tried-and-true TV traditions in a bid to keep us hooked for longer periods.

Massively popular YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast, has lodged a lawsuit against Virtual Dining Concepts (VDC), the firm behind his delivery-only fast food chain, MrBeast Burger. The issue stems from an alleged disregard for quality in favour of rapid expansion by VDC, ruining the popular YouTuber’s brand that sells burgers throughout the States.

Reports suggest that the company’s focus on swift growth led to substandard food that negatively impacted the brand’s image. The suit filed by MrBeast aims to dissolve the licensing agreement and shut down the operation altogether, citing egregious flaws in food quality and service.

Negative reviews of the brand abound, with customers labelling the burgers as “inedible” and “revolting.” A multitude of customer complaints revolve around raw meat, cold fries, missing ingredients, and orders that never materialized. Some of the ghost kitchen locations botched the branding aspect, delivering food in generic packaging or even 7-11 bags.

The YouTube star’s legal team asserts that VDC failed to rectify these quality issues despite being approached. Further, they contend that MrBeast has not been compensated despite being owed royalties. Adding fuel to the fire, the suit also alleges that VDC often registers trademarks and uses branding without prior approval.

The lawsuit indicates that VDC is exploiting the MrBeast brand to lure in other celebrities while neglecting support for new brick-and-mortar establishments that could potentially slice into its profits.

In 2020, the collaboration was initiated as a pandemic response strategy to boost delivery services and aid fans and restaurants when dining in wasn’t viable. Unfortunately, the business model’s weaknesses have been exposed as ghost kitchens aren’t held to the same regulatory standards as traditional restaurants.

Google has raised the price of YouTube Premium in the US. According to 9to5google, the new cost for both new and existing customers is $13.99 per month, up from $11.99. If you subscribe through the iOS YouTube app, the price goes up to $18.99 per month.

A Closer Look at YouTube Premium’s New Pricing Structure

According to a YouTube spokesperson, the price increase is necessary to maintain the quality of service and features provided to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers. They also stated that the new price better reflects the value offered by YouTube Premium, including ad-free streaming, offline and background play, and access to over 100 million songs on the YouTube Music app.

In late 2022, the price for YouTube Premium family plans increased to $22.99 per month. The annual subscription, introduced in 2022, is now $139.99, saving subscribers $27.89 compared to monthly payments.

The cost of YouTube Music Premium will also rise from $9.99 to $10.99 per month, aligning with similar price increases by Apple and Amazon.

Existing customers will see the new pricing reflected in their next billing cycle and will receive emails explaining the changes. Subscribers who were grandfathered in from Google Play Music and/or YouTube Red will enjoy an additional three months at their current rate.

YouTube Premium offers an ad-free viewing experience on YouTube, allowing users to watch videos without interruptions. It also includes the ability to download videos and playlists for offline viewing and play videos in the background. Additionally, YouTube Premium provides access to YouTube Music, an ad-free music streaming service, with offline playback and background listening.
