Both phones actually share a lot in common save for the processor, RAM + storage configuration, and fast charging technology. However, while the Zenfone 5z has gotten the Android 10 stable update since last year, ASUS is yet to roll it out to the Zenfone 5.

A new report says ASUS has now released an Android 10 beta update for the phone but one that is based on AOSP. While that may be sad news for owners of the phone who like the customizations ZenUI offers, it is good news to know it won’t be stuck on Android Pie.

ASUS advises users who prefer ZenUI to stay on their current build and not switch as the custom features it offers will not be available in the new update.

There is no changelog yet for the update but expect features such as Dark Mode, Smart Replies, new gesture navigation, and new Digital Wellbeing features.

The beta update is available for download here but you have to backup your device first as installing it will wipe your data. Also, the beta update is available for those with the WW SKU only. ASUS is yet to reveal a date for the stable update but we do not expect it to take long.

In related news, ASUS is yet to reveal any info on a successor to the Zenfone 6/ASUS 6z.

UP NEXT: Asus ROG Phone 3 expected to launch in Q3 of 2020, may feature Snapdragon 865 Plus

The Zenfone 5 is a really nice looking phone and it uses some premium materials like Gorilla Glass on the front and rear and a metal chassis. In addition, the device has a large 6.2″ display with the notch and 19:9 aspect ratio.

Looking past the design, camera tests by DxOMark have revealed the phone actually has very impressive cameras.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 is a mid-range phone powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor. It has dual rear cameras – a 12MP 1.4µm f/1.8 primary sensor and an 8MP 1.12µm f/2.0 secondary camera. The performance of both cameras combined is flagship-level.

DxOMark has given the phone an overall score of 90 points. It is said to perform excellently when taking still photos in all scenarios and even gets an above average performance in low-light conditions.

Its photo score is 93 points which is an average of its scores in areas such as Exposure and Contrast (92), Color (86), Autofocus (98) and more.

Video performance isn’t very great as the Zenfone 5 scored 86 points. Autofocus is still its strongest point here but it doesn’t do very well in capturing fine detail and textures.

Nevertheless, the ASUS Zenfone 5 seems to be a great choice if you are looking for a mid-range device with great cameras. DxOMark doesn’t have test results of other mid-range phones like the Nokia 7 Plus or Mi 6X, so we can’t say how their cameras compare to that of the Zenfone 5.

However, the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 is another device reviewed by DxOMark that offers a similar camera performance. It also has a more powerful processor than the Zenfone 5 and currently sells for less.

The Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5Z are nearly identical devices that differ only in processor and storage configuration. So we’ll only mention the Zenfone 5 except in cases where the Zenfone 5Z has a different specification.

Zenfone 5 Design

The Zenfone 5 has a double-sided glass design. Both are 2.5D curved Coring Gorilla Glass with a metal frame in between them. Like the leaks revealed, the Zenfone 5 has a notch in the display and ASUS isn’t ashamed to say they copied it from Apple, though they justify their action by saying their own notch is smaller.

Zenfone 5 And Zenfone 5Z Specs

The Zenfone (and 5Z) has a 6.2” FHD+ Super IPS display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, 95.4% color gamut and support for DCI-P3. Thanks to the bezel-less display, the Zenfone 5 boasts a 90% screen-to-body ratio giving it the form factor of a 5.5” phone.

Powering the Zenfone 5 is a Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 4GB or 6GB of ROM. Storage is 64GB on both variants but unlike the Zenfone 5 Lite, it doesn’t have a dedicated MicroSD card slot. So you either put a second nano SIM or add up to an additional 2TB of storage.

The Zenfone 5Z on the other hand is powered by the Snapdragon 845, the current Qualcomm champion. ASUS says there is an AI engine and a feature called AI boost which is just marketing for processor and software optimizations. It also comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB of storage.

There are stereo speakers and each has a NXP smart amplifier. There is also NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio, an audio jack, and support for Hi-Res audio and DTS. A new ZenUI based on Android Oreo also comes pre-installed.

The camera and notch are not the only things ASUS has copied from Apple’s iPhone X. The ASUS Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5Z also have their own version of Animoji called ZeniMoji.

Battery capacity on the Zenfone 5 is 3300mAh with BoostMaster (fast charging). ASUS said it has added a new feature called AI Charging which helps double the lifespan of the battery.

According to ASUS, leaving your smartphone plugged in overnight when it is full degrades the battery. With AI Charging, you can still leave your phone plugged in. The phone studies your sleep pattern, so when you plug in before going to bed, it charges the battery up to 80% and leaves it there. Just before you wake up, it then resumes charging so you can wake up to a full battery.

Zenfone 5 Cameras

The Zenfone 5 has a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a F/1.8 aperture and an 83° FOV. It is paired with a 120° wide-angle camera that allows for up to an extra 200% area into your photos.

The camera also comes with AI scene detection that can identify up to 16 different scenes and objects such as lakes, animals, sunsets, plants (flowers) and humans. There is also HDR and portrait mode.

Up front is an 8MP F/2.0 camera with Night HDR and portrait support, selfie panorama, and GIF animation.

Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5Z Price and Availability

Both phones will be available in Midnight Blue and Meteor Silver when they launch. The Zenfone 5Z will have a starting price of $479, making it the cheapest Snapdragon 845 phone at the moment. ASUS has not revealed the price of the Zenfone 5 neither has it announced a release date for both phones but when they go on sale, they will come with Hi-Res earphones in the box.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 series has been a regular on leaks lately and more keeps coming out. The latest leak is the live image of the Zenfone 5 and it sort of confirms the presence of a notch in the display similar to the iPhone X.

A couple of days back, popular Twitter tipster @RQandt shared some details of the Zenfone X with us, including the presence of an iPhone X-like display notch. The tipster also unwrapped a set of renders of the device which he claimed were from a manufacturer. Looks like the tipster was right after all as the live image shows a sleek device saddled with a design that includes a notch on the display similar to the design which Apple used on its commemorative iPhone X.

Read Also: Asus To Reportedly Launch A Gaming Smartphone At MWC 2018 Alongside Zenfone 5

The notch on the Zenfone 5 is shown to house the selfie camera lens, earpiece on the leaked live image but the renders we have seen previous showed the presence of a sensor on the left side of the earpiece. Apart from the notch, the live image shows the Zenfone 5 will indeed have a bezel-less design with a high screen-to-body ratio. The device also looks to have an 18:9 aspect ratio and that is evident in the elongated display. Furthermore, there is no physical home button at the front which is an indication the device will likely have a rear-mounted sensor or perhaps, an in-display fingerprint sensor. The renders leaked previously point at a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. We can also see the power button and volume rocker at the right side of the display.
A few weeks ago, ASUS released an official teaser poster with the hashtag – BackTo5, confirming that its next line of smartphones will indeed be called the Zenfone 5 just like the Zenfone 5 released in 2014. However, this time instead of just one phone, there will be multiple devices with the Zenfone 5 name.

For those of us who won’t be at MWC, the launch will be live-streamed here, so we shouldn’t miss much other than a hands-on experience with the devices.

So far, there are three confirmed phones in the lineup – the Zenfone 5 Max, Zenfone 5 Lite, and Zenfone 5. From the tweet we can tell that all the phones will launch with an 18:9 display. Will there be more devices? There is a high chance if we are to go by ASUS’s tradition but we may only get the above mentioned three at MWC.

Last year, ASUS released no less than 8 phones for the Zenfone 4 Series. We think that number could have been halved if ASUS didn’t release Lite, Pro, and Plus variants for each phone. Aside from the Zenfone 4 series it also launched other phones like the Zenfone AR, Zenfone Live, and Zenfone Max Plus.

Some may provide the explanation that releasing lots of phones helps a brand to stay “relevant” but we also know that quite a number of these devices may never get updated.

Don’t be, as more details have surfaced and this time they include images of the main Zenfone 5 with its iPhone-X style notch in addition to more info on the Zenfone 5 Lite. The fresh details come courtesy of Roland Quandt and Evan Blass.

Zenfone 5

A few days ago, Roland Quandt revealed in a tweet that a number of phones released this will have a notch in its display including the Zenfone 5. To back up his claim, he has released renders of the Zenfone 5 from a manufacturer’s manual.

ASUS Zenfone 5

The Zenfone 5 (ZE620KL/X00QD) shares a lot in common with Apple’s iPhone X. The display has a similar-sized notch but houses just the camera lens, earpiece, and sensor.

Although it doesn’t have the iPhone X’s IR sensor for Face ID, we can be sure it will have its own face unlock technology. The lower bezel is shown to be slightly thicker but is no longer home to a fingerprint scanner.

On the rear, the ASUS Zenfone 5 continues its imitation of the iPhone X with the design of the dual rear cameras. The setup is slightly raised and houses just the two camera lens. The LED flash is outside and a few centimeters to its right is a fingerprint scanner.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 has a metal frame that lies between two sheets of glass. Volume rocker and power button are on the right, SIM tray is on the left, and the bottom is home to an audio jack, USB-C 2.0 port, microphone and speaker grille. At the top is a secondary microphone for noise cancellation.

Zenfone 5 Lite in black, white, and red

Zenfone 5 Lite (ZC600KL/X017DA)

We already saw an official render of the Zenfone 5 Lite yesterday thanks to Evan Blass. In addition to that is another official render (above) that shows the phone in two new colors, and a 2D render that reveals some angles not visible in the official renders.

ASUS Zenfone 5 Lite

The display has an 18:9 aspect ratio but with thicker bezels compared to the Zenfone 5. There are two cameras on opposite sides of the earpiece at the top which are said to both be 20MP sensors. There is also a LED flash and a LED notification lite at the far right corner.

The Zenfone 5 Lite also rocks dual rear cameras (16MP + 16MP) which sit in the middle of the device. One of the sensors is said to be a 120° lens for wide-angle shots. A LED flash flanks it on the left and a fingerprint scanner is below the camera setup which is shown to have a small bump.

ASUS has settled for a micro USB port for the Zenfone Lite and have put the audio jack at the top.

According to a Geekbench listing, the Zenfone 5 Lite will have a Snapdragon 660 processor and 4GB of RAM which puts it in the upper mid-range category. It will come in moonlight White, Midnight Black, and Rouge Red.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 5 Lite should launch at MWC 2018 along with a Zenfone 5 Max variant.

There are multiple devices reported to be coming with the new display style and more will join as the year rolls by. According to popular leaker Roland Quandt, the ASUS Zenfone 5 will be joining the bandwagon.

2018 will be the "year of the notch". (Just not for Samsung.) You'll see at MWC. #ZenFone5

— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) February 7, 2018

For those who are confused, this is most definitely another member of the Zenfone 5 series seeing as renders of a Zenfone 5 surfaced last week and that didn’t sport a notch. Or to better explain it, this is the Zenfone 5 being referred to while last week’s model will likely launch with the Max suffix.

Like last year’s Zenfone 4, the Zenfone 5 should sport mid-range specs such as a Snapdragon 660 processor and dual rear cameras. However, it will ditch the traditional 16:9 aspect ratio.

READ MORE: Alleged ASUS ZenFone 5 Max Has Received Certification from Wi-Fi Alliance

Other phones that are expected to feature a notch include the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, the Huawei P20 Lite, Doogee V, and Vivo X30. There is an unconfirmed Nubia phone too but with a notch like that of the Essential PH-1.

The new Zenfone series are scheduled to arrive at MWC 2018. It should include Pro, Max, and Selfie versions.

The aforementioned of the ZenFone 5 concept model differs from the recently spotted ASUS ZenFone 5 X00PD model that features a larger 5.7-inch display. It includes Snapdragon 430 and 3 GB of RAM. Last year, ASUS had launched the ZenFone 4 with Snapdragon 630 whereas the Snapdragon 430 chipset were present inside ZenFone 4 Max and ZenFone 4 Selfie. Leaked information has revealed that the ZenFone 5 Max has a model number of X00QD. Hence, the X00PD phone could be ZenFone 5 Selfie as it features dual selfie snappers.

It was powered by an Intel processor and had a PowerVR GPU. Thanks to ASUS’s messed up naming scheme, the Zenfone 5 will be returning this year.

The Zenfone 5 series will likely be announced at MWC 2018 unlike last year’s Zenfone 4 series that was announced much later in Q3 2017.

A few specification details in addition to photos of one of the Zenfone 5 series has leaked online ahead of the late February/early March launch.

According to Winfuture.de who first reported the news, their source is a manufacturer’s manual and it only lists the phone’s model number as ASUS X00PD.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 X00PD is said to have a 5.7” display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The smaller bezels have led to the removal of the home button/fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint scanner now resides at the back. The top bezel houses the usual arrangement of notification LED, camera, earpiece and sensors.

Moving the fingerprint scanner to the back is not the only big change in the phone. ASUS has also changed the design of the dual rear cameras.

Rather than its former top left horizontal position, the cameras are positioned vertically in a style that reminds you of the iPhone X. However, the LED flash is below the camera setup and not in the same housing.

ASUS has also employed the U-antenna line design for this phone and its quite visible at the top and bottom. Power button and volume rocker line the right side of the phone while the SIM tray and secondary microphone are on the left.

The ASUS Zenfone 5 X00PD has a micro USB port at the bottom flanked on both sides by speaker grilles while a 3.5mm audio jack sits at the top.

This ASUS phone is said to be powered by a Snapdragon 430 processor paired with at least 3GB of RAM. The rest of the specs are currently unknown but should surface as the launch date approaches.

The company has announced that it will hold an event on 27th February and has started sending out media invites. It seems that Asus is gearing up to launch Zenfone 5 series at the event.

The Asus event will take place at 7.30pm CET and currently, there is no information available regarding the live streaming of the event. The company has announced that ASUS executives including Jerry Chen – CEO, Bryan Chang – GM of Mobile Business Division, and Marcel Campos – Global Marketing Head of Systems Business Group, will be present at the event.

While the company has not revealed what it plans to launch at the event, we expect the company to launch the Zenfone 5 series. The number “5” in the press invite suggests that the brand could unveil its ZenFone 5 series smartphones at the event.

According to the reports, the company could announce three devices at the event — the ZenFone 5 (2018), ZenFone 5 Lite and ZenFone 5 Max. In the invite, there’s also Qualcomm branding, suggesting that the devices will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Further, the invite also says #BACKTO5 along with a tagline “We Love Photo” — same as the ZenFone 4 series.

Recently, a new Asus smartphone with codename ASUS_X00QD was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance. The phone, which is believed to be the Zenfone 5 Max, runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system and has dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac support. Another phone with model ASUS ZC600KL has been certified in Russia, which is said to be the ZenFone 5 Lite.

Going by the current trend, we expect the upcoming Zenfone 5 series from Asus to come with a full-screen display with 18:9 aspect ratio as well as dual camera setup. The device could come pre-installed with Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box.

We expect more details related to this next-generation Zenfone series in the coming weeks. For the official confirmation, we’ll have to wait till the company takes the stage on 27th February at MWC 2018 in Barcelona.

The certification of the smartphone has revealed that it has a model number of ZC600KL where “KL” confirms that it would be fueled by Snapdragon chipset and it carries support for LTE connectivity. The number “60” present in the model number suggests that it would be packed with a 6-inch display. There is no confirmation on whether it will be supporting an aspect ratio of 18:9.

It is unclear whether the Taiwanese tech company will be unveiling the ZenFone 5 lineup at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 tech exhibition in the next month. There is a possibility that the company may hold a dedicated launch event for unleashing the new ZenFone 5 series of smartphones. The rumor mill is expected to reveal more information on the forthcoming ASUS phones in the coming weeks.
