This means when you get your hands on a unit, you should have an update or probably event two waiting for you.

As reported by XDA-Developers, ASUS had pushed out one update to the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip shortly before it launched. That update arrived as version WW 30.10.46.64 for the Zenfone 8 and version WW 30.10.39.62 for the Zenfone 8 Flip. Now, another update is rolling out and it comes as version WW 30.11.51.41 for the former and WW 30.11.55.37 for the latter.

This new update brings priority mode, a feature that allows select contacts who call multiple times within a short interval to bypass a phone’s mute mode. It also adds the ability to search for an app under the Force Dark Mode feature. Below is the full changelog:

Improved system stability

Improved system performance

Improved camera quality

Added priority mode in ASUS Settings

Added search function in Force Dark Mode

Enabled VoLTE on Telia (Lithuania)

Enabled VoLTE & VoWoFi on ICE (Norway)

Updated Android security patch (April 2021)

It has become the norm for manufacturers to push out updates immediately after a device is launched. These updates usually fix bugs that may have been missed and optimize important features for a better user experience.

Featuring two phones – the Zenfone 8 and Zenfone 8 Flip, ASUS is targeting two different demographics with its new phones. If you want a compact flagship device, the Zenfone 8 is for you and if you want a phone that will turn heads when you try to take a selfie in public, then the Zenfone 8 Flip is the device to go for.

POCO UI is coming

POCO started as a sub-brand of Xiaomi but is now an “independent” brand. Its phones run a slightly tweaked version of MIUI out of the box but that may change soon as the company plans to launch its own UI which will be called POCO UI. It will still be an off-shoot of MIUI but with more features exclusive to POCO devices. POCO has also revealed it has no intention to launch an Android One phone.

A new Redmi Note 8?

The Redmi Note 8 was a pretty popular device, selling more than 10 million units. According to new info that surfaced last week, it appears Redmi plans to launch a new version of the phone with new specs. This new version has been seen at the FCC and is expected to launch as the Redmi Note 8 (2021). It is also expected to have a high refresh rate display, a MediaTek chipset, and a 4000mAh battery.

If you didn’t like that Google used the same design for the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5, then the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro should excite you. We got our first look at the upcoming phones last week and they bring an entirely new design to the Pixel line.

Meizu Watch

We thought Meizu would launch its smartwatch alongside the Meizu 18 series but that didn’t happen. An alleged render of the wearable surfaced a few days ago and it has a familiar design.

OnePlus has announced a special edition of the OnePlus Watch. The OnePlus Watch Colbalt Limited Edition is made from more premium materials such as sapphire glass, a cobalt alloy frame, and leather straps. Of course, it costs more too.

Save for the Snapdragon 888 inside these devices, the two phones are quite different.

While the Zenfone 8 is compact and has a design similar to that of the average phone in 2021, the Zenfone 8 Flip is much bigger and keeps the flip camera design of the Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7 series. There are other differences too such as an IP68 rating, audio jack, dual cameras, and a 120Hz refresh rate on the Zenfone 8 while the Zenfone 8 Flip has a lower 90Hz refresh rate, no waterproof rating or audio jack, but packs motorized triple rear cameras that double as the front-facing cameras, a dedicated MicroSD card slot, and a bigger battery capacity.

For this week’s poll, we want to know which of these two flagships you prefer. Is it the Zenfone 8 or the Zenfone 8 Flip? Please take the poll and also share a comment telling us why you prefer one over the other.

Zenfone 8 Flip Design

With respect to design, the Zenfone 8 Flip is practically the Zenfone 7 Pro with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Same screen size, same camera arrangement, and almost the same dimensions. It does come in new colors though – Galactic Black and Glacier Silver.

Zenfone 8 Flip Specs

The Zenfone 8 Flip’ 6.67-inch Samsung AMOLED display has a 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+. It also has a 110% DCI-P3 Color Gamut, a peak brightness level of 1000 nits, and a 200Hz touch-sampling rate.

As expected, there is a Snapdragon 888 processor under the hood with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. There is a dedicated MicroSD card slot for adding more storage along with Dual SIM support.

ASUS is not the only manufacturer that has had to postpone a launch event due to the pandemic. Realme was supposed to have a launch event on May 4 but announced a week before the event that it has been postponed. A new date is yet to be announced.

The Zenfone 8 series launch will still hold on May 12/May 13 in other countries. ASUS will announce two phones – the Zenfone 8 and the Zenfone 8 Flip. The former is a 5.92-inch smartphone with a punch-hole display and dual rear cameras while the latter keeps the flip camera design of the Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7 series. Both phones will have a Snapdragon 888 processor powering them and have support for 30W fast charging. They will also run Android 11 out of the box.

Ahead of the launch, renders of two expected models – the Zenfone 8 Flip and the Zenfone 8 have been published, giving us an early look.

Zenfone 8 Flip

ASUS is adding the suffix “Flip” to the name of this model to denote that it has motorized rear cameras that “flip” to double as front-facing cameras just like we have on the Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7 series.

As seen in the image above, the Zenfone 8 Flip looks a lot like the Zenfone 7 Pro, and based on the info provided by the source, most of the specs have been carried forward. Not only are most of the specs the same as those of the Zenfone 7 Pro, the dimensions (almost) and weight are too.

The Zenfone 8 Flip has a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It is powered by the Snapdragon 888 and has 8GB of RAM and 256G of storage. There are three cameras – a 64MP main sensor, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP macro camera that should also double as the ultrawide angle camera. The phone packs a 5000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging.

ASUS seems to have adopted an in-display fingerprint scanner this year as the power button isn’t recessed as on the Zenfone 7 series. We do like that ASUS has also given the power button a different color. The phone weighs 230 grams, measures 165×77.3×9.5 millimeters, and will come in two colors.

Zenfone 8

The Zenfone 8 appears to be the rumored Zenfone 8 Mini due to its size. This doesn’t have flip cameras, so you get a hole punch in the screen for the front-facing camera and a dual-camera array on the back for the rear cameras.

The display of the Zenfone 8 is 5.92-inches and it has an FHD+ resolution. It appears to be AMOLED too as there is no side-mounted fingerprint scanner neither is there a scanner on the back.

Just because this is a smaller phone means that performance has also been toned down. You get the same Snapdragon 888 processor and 8GB of RAM but 128GB of storage. There should be other RAM and storage configurations available depending on the market.

The main camera is a 64MP sensor too and you get that 12MP macro camera. The battery capacity is smaller at 4000mAh but it still charges at 30W. It also has an audio jack at the top.

The Zenfone 8 is also significantly lighter at 170 grams and measures 148×68.5×9 millimeters. It will come in two colors and both have a blue-colored power button. ASUS has also confirmed that the Zenfone 8 will have an IP68 rating.

The Zenfone 8 Flip is the most interesting device on this list as it hints at a foldable phone from ASUS, a first for the Taiwanese manufacturer. An earlier leak had revealed that ASUS is planning to announce a small-screen phone for the Zenfone 8 series. It has been reported that the phone will have a 5.9-inch OLED display and a 120Hz refresh rate.

However, this new leak from Google shows that a small screen phone is not the only thing we should be excited about with the upcoming Zenfone 8 series but also what may be a foldable phone. If the name is anything to go buy, the Zenfone 8 Flip should have a design similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

Unfortunately, Google’s list doesn’t include specifications, so we are in the dark about what features this phone and the other unannounced ones will have. Nevertheless, we expect more details will surface in the weeks/months leading up to their launch.
