Lenovo may have rested the ZUK brand but the flagship model among the lot seems not to have been forgotten. Some users of the ZUK Edge in China have reportedly received the update to ZUK’s ZUI 3.1. This should come as a surprise because the brand has been rested and Lenovo seems not to be interested in pushing updates to the models. Instead, the tech giant uses the ZUI custom ROM for its revamped Moto line in China. The Moto Z2 Play in China was launched pre-installed with ZUI 3.0 and the company had hinted earlier on that it would utilise ZUI ROM for the Moto line in China were custom ROM reigns supreme.

The ZUK Edge comes pre-installed with ZUI based on Android Nougat, perhaps that is why it still gets updated. Instead of ZUI 3.0 which the Moto Z2 Play runs, the new update is named differently as ZUI 3.1. We don’t expect the previous ZUK models like the ZUK Z1 and Z2 to get this same update. For one, the ZUK Z1 has remained stuck on Android Lollipop-based ZUI 2.1 and outside China, on stock Android 5.1 Lollipop while the ZUK Z2, fair enough, has got the update to Android Nougat but both may never get updates especially the ZUK Z1 that never got updated out of Android Lollipop.

The ZUI 3.1 update brings on new features like a richer display screen, security centre search, memo cloud sync, U health access interrogation capabilities and lots more. It also includes large and small bug fixes and optimization. This latest update could be an indication that the last may not have been heard of the ZUK brand. Could there be a possibility of Lenovo launching a second-gen ZUK Edge model? We somehow hope that happens soon.

Meizu‘s beautiful Flyme OS interface was announced to become available for third-party models last month with the OnePlus 3T, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Nexus 6P, ZUK Z2 and a host of other Qualcomm phones billed as the first set of models which will have compatible versions of the new Meizu interface. Today, Meizu’s Flyme 6 OS has the honour of welcoming a new third-party model, the ZUK Edge.

Although Lenovo refuted claims that it is killing its own brand for the Motorola brand, the company indeed disclosed that it would be resting the ZUK brand. What this means is that the ZUK Edge is the last model that would be released under the ZUK brand. Although the ZUK Edge comes pre-installed with the latest Android Nougat the chances of regular updates hitting the model is low, even though Lenovo promised it would continue providing updates. However, the Flyme ROM for ZUK Edge gives users of the ZUK model sort of a lifeline, a second option of changing the interface from the company’s ZUI to Meizu’s latest Flyme 6.0.

Flyme 6 stable ROM for Lenovo’s ZUK Edge is available on the Flyme website but it must be noted that it requires some bit of expertise on flashing a phone’s ROM to do this. Also, it is important to note that Flyme 6 downgrades the ZUK Edge to Android 6.0 Marshmallow which the Flyme 6 is based on whereas the ZUI is already on Android 7.0 Nougat. Lenovo’s ZUK may have been a short-lived brand but during that period, it made a name as one of the cheapest flagship brands in the market. The last phone to come out of its factory is the ZUK Edge and there are still a number of stores that have it in stock. Jingdong Mall is an example and there is a huge discount available.

The ZUK Edge has a 5.5-inch FHD Super AMOLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass with an 86.4% screen-to-body ratio. It is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor, paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The rear camera is a 13MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and a 1.34 µm pixel size and the front camera is an 8MP f/2.2 aperture and 1.12 µm pixel size. The ZUK Edge run Android 7.0 out of the box and has a fingerprint scanner under its home button. Its 3100mAh battery is non-removable but supports Quick Charge 3.0.

When it launched, the ZUK Edge was priced at 2,299 Yuan (~$338) for the 4GB RAM variant and 2,499 Yuan (~$367) for the 6GB model. Right now, JD.com (Jingdong mall) has the white 6GB RAM variant for ¥1799 (~$264). That’s almost $75 off.

There is currently no Snapdragon 821 phone with 6GB of RAM priced under $300 neither is there one that has support for LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 20. If you are interested, you can pick up a unit here.

ZUK officially released the ZUK Edge after weeks of teases and leaks. Although it doesn’t have a bezel-less display like the Xiaomi Mi MIX, the ZUK Edge holds the title of the phone with the highest screen-to-body ratio in the company’s lineup.

Sporting the same 5.5-inch display as the ZUK Z2 Pro and a thinner body than the ZUK Z2, the ZUK Edge comes with the new ZUI 2.5 OS based on Android Nougat. It also features a Snapdragon 821 processor and an under-glass fingerprint scanner.

Available in Titanium Black and Ceramic white, I’m sure most will agree that the black is the more beautiful one, as it does a great job in highlighting the high level of craftsmanship of the device.

The ZUK Edge has a 2.5D glass in front. Underneath it lies the fingerprint scanner. The 8MP front facing camera sits a few millimeters from the top right corner. In the top part of the phone is the speaker grille which surprisingly doesn’t take up the whole length but just the right half.

The back has a simple design. All you have is a single camera followed by the LED flash and heart rate sensor and the ZUK branding close to the bottom. The ZUK Edge has its audio jack and main speaker at the bottom. You should get great sounds from it due to the built-in Dirac HD Sound which enhances the quality of the HiFi audio. The USB Type-C 3.1 port sits in the middle and the primary microphone flanks it on the left. The top is bare save for the noise cancelling microphone and antenna lines.

On the right hand side is the volume rocker and power button which are considerably thin. The left side houses the SIM tray which supports dual-nano SIM cards. It’s nt a hybrid slot so you can’t use a SD card. ZUK ships the phone with a pretty small charging adapter and a flat wire cable. You also get a SIM ejector tool and some paper work.

The launch for the ZUK Edge has been teased a couple of times in the past few weeks. Today, the Vice-President of Lenovo Group has announced that the phone will now launch on the 20th of December. The event will take place at Wuhan and will kick off at 1400hrs (GMT+8).

The ZUK Edge has generated a lot of controversy based on the fact that leaked images of the device does nothing to justify the ”Edge” name. And we can’t blame those who are displeased since the word Edge in a device has become synonymous to a curved display, a feature the ZUK Edge clearly lacks.

ZUK is redefining the word ”Edge” by launching a phone with a flat screen and slightly thinner bezels than usual. Images of the ZUK Edge leaked in the past have shown a device that does look sophisticated in black but lacks that wow factor in the white version.

When it launches next Tuesday, the ZUK Edge is expected to feature a 5.5” FHD screen, a snapdragon 821 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and Android 7.0 Nougat. It will also sport a 13MP rear camera, an 8MP front facing camera, and a fingerprint scanner.

The Lenovo ZUK Edge is expected to be launched sometime this week and just before that happens, there has been another leak of the device’s render. Not that this is the first we’ll be seeing but this new render leaked via Slashleaks is an high-definition image of the front view of the ZUK Edge. Indeed it shows all the front features and design clearly as opposed to previous renders.

Lenovo‘s ZUK Edge flagship is one of the devices currently making waves even before they are released. The device wasa recently spotted on AnTuTu where it was revealed to have the Snapdragon 821 chip onboard. Images of the sleek and stunning looking device had appeared online before now, revealing its unique design. Again, renders of the device has leaked right from the doorstep of Lenovo’s vice-President on Weibo.

The images further reveal the ZUK Edge’s design captured from both the front and back sides of the device. The most stunning feature should be the ultra thin bezels at the sides of the display which make the device looks like the Xiaomi Mi Mix concept phone. That is because the device is composed almost entirely of the display at the front as a result of the tiny bezels. There is a physical home button up front, though, which also functions as a fingerprint sensor. The flagship device also has a front camera at the top.

There is no doubt this is the real device as the paper box casing bears the name of the device. The box casing comes in the same black color as the device but we had earlier seen the white colored variant. The ZUK Edge also seem to come with a protective casing which is likely because of the large display that may be prone to damage easily.

The vice-President of Lenovo Group, apart from gifting us these stunning renders, also hinted that the device would be officially released next week. The ZUK Edge comes packing a 2.35GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip with Adreno 530 GPU, and back by 6GB of RAM. There is also 64GB of internal storage on the device that would run on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box.

Further, the device is said to feature a 5.5-inch display with Full HD resolution (1980 x 1080 pixels) and at the rear there is a 13MP camera. While there is an 8MP front-facing camera.
