Most of us will definitely remember the era when BlackBerry held sway and everyone wants to own a Blackberry smartphone. All that changed with the advent of Android phones and the fluidity it brought in terms of user interface. Well, Blackberry still controls a lot of patents to date and even though the company is out contention in the industry, it holds a number of patents. Blackberry has accused Twitter of infringing on six of its patents.BLACKBERRY KEY2 LE

Both companies are locked in a legal tussle, instituted by Blackberry which accused Twitter of infringing on some of its patents covering things like push notifications, silencing notifications for a message thread and mobile advertising techniques. In the suit, the Canadian company which referred to itself as a pioneer in mobile messaging,  alleged that Twitter “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative user interface and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”

This lawsuit is similar to the one Blackberry filed against Facebook last year. In the case of Facebook, BlackBerry cited seven patents that relate to security, user interface features, battery-efficient status updates, mobile messaging in games and, similarly to its issue with Twitter, silencing notifications. Facebook was later to file a countersuit where it alleged that Blackberry infringed on five of its patents. The two suits are still in litigation and so, we don’t expect a resolution to emerge from this new suit anytime soon.
