A new report from Strategy Analytics has revealed that the Global smartphone Applications Processor (AP) market has grown by 6 percent in terms of revenue in the first quarter of 2020 despite the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the report from Strategy Analytics’ Handset Component Technologies (HCT), the global smartphone Applications Processor market now sits at 4.7 billion US Dollars. In the market, Qualcomm maintained a dominating lead with a market share of 40 percent. Huawei’s HiSilicon came in second with 20 percent, while Apple made accounted for 15 percent.

“Qualcomm’s 5G-centric flagship smartphone AP Snapdragon 865 and its 5G SoCs Snapdragon 765/G were off to a great start and featured in multiple high volume smartphones from top smartphone manufacturers,” said Sravan Kundojjala, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics. In other words, 5G had a big role in help growing the market revenue for this quarter.

Samsung LSI and MediaTek came in third and fourth places respectively, rounding up the top 5 market revenue holders. For Qualcomm, its 5G enabled APs accounted for over 20 percent of the company’s total smartphone AP shipments in Q1 2020. Meaning, the newer and faster bandwidth saw notable growth during this period which is reflected in the overall market as well.
