For about a decade now, YouTube is known to release a special video at the end of the year called Rewind that features creators from the platform as well as clips and trends that were popular that year. For those looking forward to this year’s version, YouTube says it will not be happening.

The official YouTube account put out a statement announcing that “2020 has been different” and “it doesn’t feel right to carry on as if it weren’t”, hence they will be taking a break and won’t make a rewind video this year.

The first rewind video was released in 2010 and each edition garners millions of views with 2016’s edition having 239 million views. However, for a few years now, the videos have gotten a lot of flak with the 2018 edition being the most disliked video on YouTube with 18 million dislikes.

The news of Rewind not happening this year has been received positively by some while others are sad about it. Also, YouTube not explicitly saying if they will make one next year has some folks speculating that Rewind may be canceled permanently. Nevertheless, we expect some creators will make their own compilations by the end of the year highlighting important events and trends.
