Last week, Google announced that it has just fired a senior software engineer after he began claiming that the company’s AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot was a sentient being (became self aware).

According to a Reuters report, the Search Engine giant had placed software engineer Blake Lemoine on leave last month after he had violated certain company policies. Furthermore, the brand also found that his claims on LaMDA chatbot being sentient was also “wholly unfounded.” A company spokesperson told Reuters that “It’s regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information.”

For those unaware, Google had announced last year that LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) could basically be trained on dialogue that will enable it to learn to talk about essentially anything. The company and many leading scientists have also come forward to dismiss Lemoine’s claims. The LaMDA is simply a complex algorithm designed to generate convincing human language. So unfortunately, it appears that the day that AI take over the world is still a little while away.
