Previously, it was reported that Apple is banking on iOS 18-loaded software and AI features for the next-generation iPhone 16 series. Now, the latest information from notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also strengthens the previous report. Next year’s iPhone 16 lineup is said to pack a significantly upgraded microphone. The Cupertino-based tech giant is lagging behind in the generative AI space and aims to compete against Google and OpenAI.

Kuo in a Medium post says that strengthening Siri’s hardware and software features and specifications will be the key to promoting AI-generated content. This means that all models in the next-generation iPhone 16 lineup will be equipped with upgraded microphones for better voice and speech integration for triggering Siri and other AI functions. The major upgrade to the microphone will offer a better signal-to-noise ratio for a significantly improved Siri experience. It is also said to have better water resistance.

The report indicates that Apple’s generative AI ambitions and large-language models will heavily rely on voice input processing. The company also aims to integrate more AI features into Siri. Kuo reveals that Apple reorganized its Siri team in Q3 2023 to integrate generative AI and LLMs.

The upgraded microphones on the iPhone 16 series are said to be a costly affair for Apple. The ASP of the iPhone 16’s microphones is expected to be 100 – 150 percent higher than the iPhone 15. Apple’s suppliers AAC and Goertek will benefit from the specification upgrade.
