The Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro/Mi Note 10 launched as the first phone with a 108MP camera sensor. The phone now sits at the top of DxOMark’s smartphone camera ranking alongside the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. Next year, more phones with a 108MP sensor should launch but do not expect one from Honor.

The president of the Huawei sub-brand, Zhao Ming, said at a press conference that the company will not be joining the bandwagon. He explained that the improvement of mobile photography isn’t limited to just more pixels but a combination of hardware and software.

He also cited some disadvantages of the 108MP sensor. First, he said there is a delay when you take a photo due to the high resolution of the camera. He said this delay of a few seconds is unacceptable. Another disadvantage he mentioned is the size of the photos. They take up more space which means storage quickly gets used up.

For future Honor phones, the focus will be on pushing the combination of software and hardware to the extreme for a better camera experience.
