Google is bringing more AI creativity to your photo library. US users of Google Photos can try out a new feature powered by Veo 3, the company’s latest AI video generation model. The update lets you turn still photos into short, four-second clips straight from the app’s Create tab.
The Veo3 video generation model launched in July, and it delivers sharper and more realistic results than its predecessor. Under the Create tab inside Photos, users can choose between two modes — “Subtle Motion” or “I’m Feeling Lucky” — both designed to add a touch of movement without going overboard. According to Google spokesperson Michael Marconi, Veo 3 produces a more lifelike effect compared to what came before.
Veo 3 was first introduced at Google I/O back in May alongside Flow, a text-to-video tool, and Vids, an AI-powered video editor. While the most advanced features, like its ultra-realistic voice generation, remain locked behind the $250-per-month AI Ultra plan, Google Photos users now get limited daily access to video generation for free. Those on paid AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions will see higher usage limits.
The Create tab also houses other AI tricks, including turning photos into 3D animations or automatically assembling highlight reels based on keywords. Together, these tools make Google Photos more than just a storage service — it’s edging closer to a creative suite for casual users and content creators alike.
By putting Veo 3 directly in the hands of free Photos users, Google is making its AI experiments far more accessible. And with the quality boost this update brings, short-form creators and everyday users may find themselves reaching for Photos as more than just a backup app.
