Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi 17 in China, skipping the “16” branding entirely and going straight to its latest flagship. The device arrives as the first phone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the chipmaker’s newest high-end processor announced earlier this week.

The Xiaomi 17 weighs 191g and features a 6.3-inch flat display with very slim 1.18mm bezels. The screen uses Xiaomi’s Dragon Crystal Glass for protection and supports peak brightness of up to 3,500 nits. It’s also IP66, IP68, and IP69 certified, meaning it can handle both dust and water exposure. Four color options will be available at launch.

One of the main talking points is the battery. Despite the compact size, Xiaomi has fitted a 7,000mAh unit inside. The company claims this allows more than 12 hours of short-video playback, which it says outlasts even the iPhone 17 when paired with a 5,000mAh magnetic power bank.

Cooling has also been upgraded. The phone introduces a new three-dimensional ring cold pump system, which Xiaomi says is three times more efficient than traditional vapor chambers. This should help sustain performance during longer gaming or AI workloads.

The rear camera setup includes a 1/1.31-inch Light Hunter 950 main sensor, alongside 50MP ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. On the front, a 50MP sensor handles selfies.

Pricing and availability:

Pricing starts at 4,499 yuan (about $630) for the 12GB/256GB model. Higher configurations are priced as follows:

12GB + 512GB – 4,799 yuan (about $672)
16GB + 1TB – 4,999 yuan (about $700)

The Xiaomi 17 launches alongside Pro and Pro Max models, but this smaller version is clearly aimed at users who want flagship performance in a lighter, more compact body. Pre-orders are already live in China, with sales beginning at 10:00 AM local time on September 27. While no global launch date has been officially revealed yet, the phones are expected to cross borders sometime in early 2026.
