The Honor Magic 9 series is scheduled to launch on September 28 with a very different design from its predecessors. As expected, Honor has started teasing the series, and this article is about the camera samples from the standard Honor Magic 9.
Just like the camera module design, the optics also got a major refresh. Unlike last year’s Honor Magic 8, which came with a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 64MP 3x telephoto, this year’s standard Honor Magic 9 comes with a 200MP main sensor with a 1/1.4″ sensor size, compared to 1/1.56″ last year. So, it’s a little bit larger. Then, the periscope telephoto also has a 200MP resolution and a 1/1.56″ sensor size, compared to last year’s telephoto. The ultrawide camera retains the 50MP resolution of its predecessor.
The company shared quite a few high-resolution samples taken in both bright and low-light conditions, with key information such as focal length, shutter speed and ISO included, giving us an idea of the capabilities of those two 200-megapixel cameras.
Looking at the low-light samples first, we see eye-pleasing colors, good exposure, and dynamic range, with no obvious artifacts such as noise despite the lack of proper lighting. All three samples were taken at an 80mm focal length, meaning they’re from the 200MP 3.5x telephoto camera. Reports say this is a Samsung sensor, and the newly launched ISOCELL HP5 matches the 1/1.56-inch sensor size.
Daylight samples from that telephoto look even better, with plenty of detail, nice colors, and good dynamic range.
The daylight samples captured with the main camera show 50mm and 45mm focal lengths, which translates to roughly a 2x crop. Surprisingly, one of the three samples from the main camera shows some visible artifacts on the face upon closer inspection, which could be the result of imperfect noise removal, while another sample looks a bit softer.
