Just a few weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max started shipping, some owners started posting about what looked like weird color shifts around the rear camera module, especially on the new Burgundy models.

Turns out it’s not permanent discoloration or a finish defect. After digging through the Reddit threads and comments, it seems to be dust and fine debris collecting in the hard-to-reach spots between and around the camera lenses. Because the Burgundy finish is so deep and rich, that dust shows up much more clearly than it does on Silver or Glacier. A lot of people initially thought it was some kind of permanent mark because cleaning didn’t seem to fix it for good.

The reality is simpler: wipe it with a microfiber cloth or a bit of isopropyl alcohol and the marks disappear. But the second the phone goes back in a pocket or bag, the dust starts collecting again. That’s why it keeps coming back.
Constant wiping means you’re repeatedly rubbing any tiny grit that’s sitting there across the camera glass, which raises the risk of micro-scratches over time. And while alcohol works in a pinch, using it regularly could theoretically affect the adhesive holding the camera glass in place, and it’s probably not something you want to do if you’re worried about keeping the warranty clean.

So the real takeaway isn’t that Apple has a manufacturing problem. It’s that the Burgundy color, combined with the camera module’s design, just makes everyday dust a lot more visible. If you’re thinking about getting that color, you’ll probably need to wipe the camera area more often than you’re used to. If you already have one and the “discoloration” is bothering you, a proper clean will clear it up; just know it’ll likely return until the next wipe.
Not a defect. Just a color that doesn’t hide the mess as well as the others.
