Baseus has launched a new audio device in China aimed at a very specific use case: listening to audio in bed without wearing earbuds or bothering the person next to you. The Baseus Sleep SK1 is a flat Bluetooth speaker designed to slip directly under your pillow. It is currently listed on JD.com for 184 yuan, which converts to roughly $28.
Baseus Sleep SK1 Specifications
If you are putting electronics under your head, the physical dimensions are the most important factor. The SK1 is 14mm thick, 16.5cm long, and weighs 44 grams. It has a flat profile so it shouldn’t create a noticeable lump under your pillow, even if you sleep on your side or move around during the night.
The casing has a matte finish and is made from fire-resistant materials, which is a practical safety inclusion for a battery-powered device that will be sandwiched in bedding. There is also a small digital display on the side that shows the time in a 24-hour format, the remaining battery life, and the current operating mode.
Instead of standard speaker drivers pushing air into the room, the SK1 uses a micro-vibration transmission system. It features symmetrical dual vibration drivers that send sound waves through the pillow.
This directional audio approach means you hear the sound clearly when your head is down, but audio leakage is kept to a minimum to avoid waking up a partner or roommate. Baseus says that this works best with pillows that are less than 8 cm thick, though you can adjust the volume if your pillow is thicker.
The device supports Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity for streaming music, podcasts, and audiobooks from your phone. It also features an offline mode for phone-free listening.
The companion app offers over 100 white noise tracks, including rain, campfire sounds, and ASMR, along with 30-120 minute sleep timers and up to 10 customizable alarms. Its directional audio technology is designed to wake you without disturbing others.
The speaker packs a 300mAh battery that delivers over 10 hours of continuous playback. It charges through a USB-C port and takes approximately two hours to reach a full charge.
