Pixel 8a leaks again, this time in an official carrier listing

The Pixel 8a has been the subject of rumors for a while now, with leaks popping up left and right. Even Google Fi itself accidentally spilled some beans on what we can expect from the upcoming device. Most recently, a tipster caught a glimpse of the phone on a US carrier’s website.

Leaker Evan Blass was quick to spot the Pixel 8a on UScellular’s website. Apparently, the carrier had uploaded a tutorial for the device before swiftly taking it down.

Google Pixel 8a US Carrier Listing

But Blass managed to grab a screenshot that revealed the Obsidian color variant, along with the previously leaked colors Porcelain, Bay, and Mint.

In terms of design, it seems the Pixel 8a is taking a different route from its predecessor, the Pixel 7a. It’s got curvier edges and thicker bezels, but the carrier listing doesn’t reveal the back of the device. However, leaks so far hint at a switch from the 7a’s glossy finish to a matte texture.

There are also whispers that Pixel 8a will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display boasting a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1,400 nits. Powering it could be the Tensor G3 chip, though probably a slightly dialed-down version compared to the one in the Pixel 8 series.

Battery life might also get a boost from the 7a, according to a recent rumor, possibly with faster charging capabilities.

Google I/O is right around the corner on May 14th, and it’s expected the tech giant will announce the smartphone at the event.

There’s talk of a price increase over the $499 Pixel 7a, which could shake things up in the mid-range phone market of 2024. Whether this affects its chances of being the best mid-range phone of the year remains to be seen.

TV manufacturer apparently makes world’s first AI movie. Watch the trailer here!

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been making waves across industries, and the world of video production is no exception. One notable example is OpenAI’s SORA which can generate incredibly good realistic videos.

That said, AI-generated video is still in its early stages and needs time to develop. But there’s an interesting development on the horizon: TCL is gearing up to debut a film featuring characters created using AI

TCL is a major television manufacturer based in China and the world’s second-largest producer of TV sets, holding a 12.5 percent market share. The company ships its TVs with TCLtvPlus streaming service, a free, ad-supported service similar to Samsung TV Plus.

The service includes more than 200 FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels and 1500+ on-demand movies and TV series from major and independent studios such as Scripps Media, Fremantle, NBC Universal, and more.

Now, however, the platform will also feature original shows that leverage AI for tasks such as animating characters.

Recently, TCL released the trailer for its first AI-assisted romantic film, “Next Stop Paris,” featuring AI-generated characters. As expected, the quality is noticeably different from big-budget Hollywood productions.

But I must admit, as one of the first AI-powered movie trailers I’ve seen, it’s quite impressive. There’s definitely room for improvement. But TCL has surprisingly managed to keep things like lighting and fabric details and there are no glaring issues with hand movements too.

However, it’s worth noting that TCL is combining AI animation with motion and audio capture of real actors for the movie. So not everything’s AI here.

AI, at the stage it is right now, cannot independently produce feature-length films of the quality expected by audiences. However, future advancements could pave the way for streaming services to generate entirely AI-driven content

For those willing to see TCL’s upcoming romantic special, you need to buy a TCL TV before this summer.

Microsoft is testing ads disguised as “Recommendations” in Windows 11

Microsoft recently rolled out a fresh update (KB5037000) for Windows 11 Insiders in the Beta Channel. Alongside introducing new interactive elements for Windows Spotlight, the update also comes with a not-so-welcome tweak: more app recommendations (that essentially are ads) in the Start menu.

These recommendations pop up in the Start menu’s “Recommended” section and will show apps from the Microsoft Store based on your recent app usage. This means you might encounter app suggestions that don’t quite match your interests.

Currently, the Start menu organizes apps into “Pinned” and “Recommendations” sections. The latter usually includes recently used files or apps, newly installed applications, and even tips for utilizing new Windows features.

Now, with the latest update, recommendations from the Microsoft Store have been added, giving off an ad-like vibe.

While these recommended apps might not directly come from app developers paying for placement, Microsoft does earn revenue from apps distributed through its store. Thus, from a user’s perspective, it can still feel like advertising.

Microsoft-Store

There is some good news, however. You can disable the feature entirely. Simply head to Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off the toggle for “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”

Additionally, this change currently only affects Insiders in the Beta Channel and on personal devices, meaning work computers (often managed by organizations) are not impacted for now.

Most importantly, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed if this feature will make it to the final release of Windows 11. The company is using the Insider program to gather feedback, and based on user response, they may decide to scrap the idea altogether.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 5G, Phantom V Flip 2 5G EEC certified, launching soon

Tecno launched the Phantom V Fold, its first foldable phone, at the beginning of 2023. In the second half of the year, it launched its first clamshell-style foldable phone, the Phantom V Flip. We have entered the second quarter of the year 2024 and there has been no announcement on the successor edition of the Phantom V Fold. However, a new development suggests that the company could be working on the second-generation Phantom V Fold and V Flip phones.

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 5G, Phantom V Flip 2 5G monikers spotted

Tecno Phantom V Fold 2, V Flip 2 5G EEC
Tecno Phantom V Fold 2, V Flip 2 5G EEC certified

The above screenshot shows that the Tecno Phantom V Fold 2 5G bears the AE10 model number and the Tecno Phantom V Flip 2 5G is identified with the AE11 model number. To recall, the Phantom V Fold and V Flip from last year have AD10 and AD11 model numbers, respectively.

While the EEC certification hints that the brand is working on the Phantom V Fold 2 and V Flip 2, concrete details about their specifications haven’t appeared yet. Interestingly, the AE10 model was spotted on Geekbench in January and February of this year, whereas the AE11 appeared on the same platform in February. The listings indicated that both models feature the Dimensity 9000+ and Dimensity 8050 chipsets, respectively.

To recall, the D9000+ and D8050 chipsets power the first-generation Phantom V Fold and V Flip, respectively. It is unlikely that the brand will use the same chip to power the successor models. Hence, it appears that there could be some discrepancies in the Geekbench listings of Phantom V Fold 2 and V Flip 2. Therefore, it is advisable to wait for further reports to learn about these devices.
