LG has been launching new smartphones under its G-series as well as V-series and the line between the two is now fading. So, when asked about the same during an interview, Frank Lee, Vice President of Marketing for LG clarified the company’s stance and shed light on its foldable smartphone.
He said that the V-series of smartphones is the one under which the company will be taking more chances. So, consider the V-series as the South Korean company’s testing pad for experimental devices. Further explaining this, he also revealed that when LG launches a foldable smartphone, it will most likely be under the V-series.
So, new features come to V-series smartphones first and are later offered in G-series phone. For example, the LG V40 ThinQ had the triple-camera setup first, which was later introduced in the G8 ThinQ. So, LG tries out new ideas in the V-lineup and when it is satisfied with the results, those get introduced in the G-lineup, which the company says is for “everyone.”
While LG has been working on a foldable smartphone, which is pretty evident with the patent applications and prototype leaks, the company has not officially said anything about it and when it plans to launch its first foldable smartphone.
Royole beat Samsung and Huawei with the launch of Royole FlexPai last month, which is the world’s first foldable smartphone. However, a few weeks ago, Samsung launched its foldable smartphone — Samsung Galaxy Fold and yesterday, Huawei introduced Huawei Mate X — the world’s first foldable 5G smartphone.
Meanwhile, LG has today announced two major smartphones during Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. The company has launched LG V50 ThinQ powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC and 5G connectivity support along with LG G8 ThinQ and LG G8s ThinQ with high-end specs.

OPPO showcased a prototype smartphone bearing the 10X lossless zoom feature on Saturday at MWC 2018. The company had hinted during the event that the smartphone would be launched in Q2 2019. However, OPPO’s VP has shared a teaser on his Weibo page which hints that the device will specifically drop on April. That is just about two months from now.
In addition, Twitter leakster Roland Quandt who was at the exhibition shared a hands-on video of the device in action. He also revealed more details of the feature in the video. As a reminder, the 10x optical zoom uses a periscopic lens system. Although it seems the device has a triple camera setup but in the real sense, there are just two visible sensors; a 48MP main + wide-angle camera, both with OIS. The third lens is a prism, hence the shape is not round like the others. Light travels through the prism where it meets about five lenses before hitting the image sensor. The camera interface comes with a slider which changes the zoom level as it slides up.
The camera samples captured at the even were also shared and we must say they look pretty impressive. The image quality isn’t exactly the same at the different zoom levels but the difference in quality isn’t very different compared to if the feature isn’t available. Achieving 10X zoom on a smartphone camera would have meant sacrificing the picture clarity but that isn’t the case here.
The device info section seems to point at the device bearing the name OPPO R11s but this isn’t actually the Snapdragon 660-powered R11s. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 855 chipset. The device will also have a resolution of 2340X1080 pixels. You may want to check out the camera samples and hands-on video from below.
TCL has announced a new variant of the BlackBerry KEY2. Called the BlackBerry KEY2 Red Edition, it comes in a new and attractive red color that is unlike the Atomic Red version of the KEY2 LE. It also comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
The BlackBerry KEY2 Red Edition now has its steel frame painted red and it extends to the front, covering the spaces between the black keys and the bezels around the screen too. It actually looks really good. The back is still black though.
This version has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Blackberry also added some software upgrades. The Hub+ app now has an action bar with important shortcuts. The Hub and calendar apps have also been redesigned. There is still no Android Pie.
While the paint job is pretty great, this variant is expensive. BlackBerry/TCL is asking for €779! For that price, you get a phone with a 4.5-inch 1080 x 1620 display, a Snapdragon 660 processor and dual 12MP rear cameras. It also has an 8MP front-facing camera, FM radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, a fingerprint scanner, and a 3,500mAh battery.
Last year, Essential laid off 30% of its workers. Some key executives also left, leading to the rumor that the company was probably going to shut down. Now, the company is planning to increase its workforce and has listed 21 vacancies. Some of these positions hint at what Essential might be planning for the future.
Part of the positions are for interns and are contract based but some are for full-time employees. Some of these full-time jobs hint at Essential developing its imaging technology. There are vacancies for a camera hardware engineer, a computational imaging lead, a computer vision software engineer, and an image quality engineer.
The Essential PH-1 wasn’t a great camera phone when it launched and although Essential tried to improve the camera performance via software updates, it still couldn’t measure up to other flagships released the same year. These positions might be an indication that it’s working on getting things right for its future releases.
Essential is also recruiting for software engineers that will handle projects such as building the backend for powering Essential’s online services and building new apps. There are also vacancies for supervisors that will oversee mass production and launch of new products. Based on all these, one can conclude that Essential is still very much in the phone business and is working on new products.
