Fast charging has become one of the biggest competitive headlines in phones today. Brands like Xiaomi, OPPO, and others boast numbers as high as 200W and even 240W, promising a full charge in minutes. But how does ultra-fast charging compare with more moderate speeds like 65W when it comes to battery health after two years of regular use? The short answer? There is a trade-off.

Battery Degradation

Unlike rapid top-ups you might do daily, battery cycle life is the best proxy for long-term wear. Industry standards generally consider a battery still healthy at 80% capacity after 800 cycles, meaning it retains 80% of its original capacity and performance. However, ultra-high-watt charging changes that equation. Devices using 65W charging tech tend to degrade less over time. But after about the same 800 cycles, batteries charged at 65W can retain approximately 91% of their original capacity.

Xiaomi’s 200W Fast Charging Solution

So, you get a solid performance that means noticeably longer lifespan and less capacity loss after two years of typical use. On the other hand, phones that support faster charging speeds, like 200W charging, show faster degradation. Evidence suggests these batteries can fall to around 80% capacity after just 800 cycles, which aligns with the minimum baseline for acceptable battery health, but it hits this mark much earlier than models with 65W charging support.

What These Percentages Mean in Real Use

When we talk about 80% vs 91 % capacity after two years, the difference is more than just a number on paper:

80% Battery Capacity: You’ll likely notice shorter screen-on time, faster drainage during heavy use, and more frequent mid-day charging. The battery feels more tired, especially after a couple of years.

91% Battery Capacity: The battery still feels closer to “new,” retains longer endurance, and delivers steadier performance throughout the day.

Realme GT 3 with 240W Charging Support

In practical terms, a device with 200W charging might need battery health conservation strategies earlier. This could include limited full charges, enabling optimized charging, or reducing high-watt charging use.

Why Faster Charging Affects Battery Health

It might seem counterintuitive that faster charging could be worse for battery health, but the mechanisms are rooted in electrochemistry:

Heat: Ultra-fast charging creates more heat inside the battery during the charge process. Heat is one of the main accelerators of battery ageing, which speeds up internal chemical reactions that degrade the electrode materials over time.

Charge Stress: Charging at higher wattages pushes more current into the battery at once. This can increase stress on the lithium-ion cells, leading to faster capacity loss across many cycles.

Thermal Management: Modern phones use advanced cooling and thermal throttling, like graphite layers, vapor chambers, and smart charging algorithms help reduce heat and mitigate degradation. However, these systems only reduce the long-term impact, not eliminate it entirely. So while a phone with 200W charging won’t immediately fail, the battery will show signs of ageing sooner than a phone that uses 65W charging under the same usage pattern.

OPPO’s Surprising Case

Interestingly, real-world testing has shown that in some cases, a 150W charging implementation (like OPPO’s) can outlast an even faster 240W solution. In some scenarios, it even managed to achieve up to double the cycle life (approx 1,600 cycles) before reaching similar degradation levels. This highlights how fast charging is implemented (software control, cell chemistry, thermal design) matters as much as the wattage itself.

Should You Avoid Fast Charging?

Ultra-fast charging isn’t inherently bad. In fact, it’s extremely convenient, especially if your lifestyle demands quick top-ups between meetings or when you’re travelling. Considering the massive upgrades in battery tech in recent years, these devices have also retained good battery capacities even after a few years. Faster charging does accelerate capacity loss compared to more moderate speeds, so here’s how you can balance conveniencewith longevity:

Use standard charging (like 30–65W) for overnight/top-off charging.

Reserve super fast charging for when you really need speed.

Enable battery care features and Super OTA battery management options if available.

Avoid extreme thermal environments (like charging in hot cars or under direct sunlight)

Now, a new report has even revealed certain details regarding the upcoming foldable smartphone from Oppo.

According to known tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website), the company is working on a smartphone with foldable handset. In the social media post, the tipster stated that Chinese tech giant’s foldable smartphone will be powered by a large 4,500mAh battery pack. Furthermore, this battery will also support a 65W fast charging solution as well. Previously, the tipster had even shared other information regarding the foldable smartphone from Oppo. Back in August, Digital Chat Station shared that the foldable phone will feature a low temperature polycrystalline oxide(LTPO) display.

Reportedly, this foldable handset will run on ColorOS 12 out of the box and is expected to have Android 12 underneath. Unfortunately, the tipster did not reveal any other information apart from this, although, he did add that the foldable smartphone from Oppo isn’t too far from launch. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt, and stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this device.

According to reports, it may even be announced this month. The smartphone which will have a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor under its hood will also have support for “ultra-fast charging”.

According to the Chinese blogger that goes by “Super Leo_” on Weibo, the Redmi gaming smartphone will support “65W ultra-fast flash charge”. This will be the first Redmi phone to support this charging protocol and also the fastest charging Redmi smartphone.

He also adds that the Redmi gaming smartphone will likely have a ¥2000 (~$305) starting price. There is still a lot we do not know about the phone but more details should surface as its release date draws closer.

For those outside China who look forward to its global release, it has been reported that it may arrive under the POCO brand much like how the Redmi K40 is sold as the POCO F3 outside China.

Now, a leak has revealed that ASUS will once again go with a 6000mAh battery capacity for the ROG Phone 4.

Just a few flagship phones have a battery capacity of 5000mAh, so 6000mAh is more than sufficient for the ROG Phone 4. We also don’t see that battery capacity changing anytime soon. Seeing as battery capacity has remained unchanged over three generations, ASUS has decided to go with faster charging as the way to distinguish between the phones.

According to Digital Chat Station, the ROG Phone 4 will support 60W or 65W fast (wired) charging. This should allow users to recharge the dual-cell 6000mAh battery faster than its predecessor, the ROG Phone 3, which supports 30W fast wired charging.

EDITOR’S PICK: ASUS confirms no Android 10 update for ROG Phone

When compared to other competing gaming smartphones that will also be launched this year such as the Black Shark 4 and Red Magic 6, the ROG 4’s 60W/65W fast charging is much slower than their 120W fast wired charging. However, its battery capacity is significantly higher than theirs which is just 4500mAh.

The ROG Phone 4 should also support reverse wired charging, Quick Charge 4, and Power Delivery. The phone is expected to arrive this quarter, which is at least four months earlier than the ROG Phone 3.

Just like other flagship phones, the ROG Phone 4 will have a Snapdragon 888 processor under its hood and support for 5G. Its AMOLED display is also expected to have a refresh rate of 144Hz or higher and it should run Android 11 out of the box.

The renders and specs are from OnLeaks and he has partnered with the Indian blog, PriceBaba. These renders are said to be based on internal schematics and not 3D CADs, so there are no dimensions.

The OnePlus 8T will indeed have a flat display with a hole punch at the top left corner of the screen. The back is covered in glass and it is curved with rounded corners. OnePlus has adopted a new design for the rear cameras. Gone is the centered and elongated pill-shaped housing, and in its place is a rectangular housing similar to the ones we have seen on Samsung phones. The camera housing is home to four cameras arranged in an L-shape and an LED flash.

The phone has a USB-C port at the bottom and it is flanked on the right by two slits for the speaker grille and the SIM tray on the left. The alert slider and power button are on the right side of the frame while the left is home to the volume control. There is also a wide but thin speaker grille above the display.

With respect to the specs, the OnePlus 8T is said to have a 6.55-inch screen just like the OnePlus 8. The resolution is still FHD+ but the refresh rate ha been bumped up to 120Hz. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 865 processor and it will be paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM with 128GB and 256GB of storage respectively.

The OnePlus 8T is reported to have a 32MP selfie camera while the quad cameras on the back of the phone include a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultrawide angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor.

The camera is getting a slight bump from 4300mAh on the OnePlus 8 to 4500mAh on the OnePlus 8T. However, fast charging gets a huge bump as the OnePlus 8 is said to support 65W fast charging. What do you think it will be called, Warp Charge 65? As expected, the phone will run Android 11 with OxygenOS 11 on top out of the box.

The OnePlus 8T should launch by the end of the month or by the first week of October. It is not yet known if any of the reported mid-range Nord phones will be arriving together with it or later.

The latest one released today tells us the battery capacity as well as the supported power rating.

The Black Shark 3 will have a 4720mAh battery capacity and from the poster, it shows the battery is split into two just like that of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. It was previously reported that it has a 5000mAh battery but the poster shows that is not the case.

The phone will also have support for 65W fast wired charging just like the upcoming OPPO Find X2 and the Realme X50 Pro 5G that was announced earlier this week. The Weibo post revealed that it will take just 15 minutes to charge one of the batteries (2780mAh) to full.

Other known features of the phone are a 120Hz refresh rate, LPDDR5 RAM, Snapdragon 865 processor, UFS 3.0 storage, and Dual-mode 5G.

The phone will be unveiled in China on March 3.

At the moment, finer details regarding the device are still unknown but certain regarding its battery has been revealed.

According to Luo Shao, the CEO of Black Shark, the company is looking to strike a balance between the battery capacity and charging power of the smartphone. In other words, a careful process is being undertaken to keep the charging and discharging rate in mind. Since the Black Shark 3 will feature 5G network, the strain on the battery life will also be noticeable. Thus, the company is planning on improving both battery capacity and charging rates while specifically designing a heat dissipation design for the smartphone

Furthermore, the senior executive started a vote on “which combination with charging rates, battery capacity and discharging rates do users prefer in a 5G gaming smartphone.” He offered four different configurations, that are:

65W + 5000mAh, 100% charge in 38 minutes, cycle life> 800.

55W + 4500mAh, 100% charge in 40 minutes, cycle life> 600

65W + 4000mAh, 100% charge in 30 minutes, cycle life> 600

55W + 4440mAh, 100% charge in 36 minutes, cycle life> 600

Editor’s Pick: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone launched in India for ₹1,09,999 ($1,534)

Similarly, the Chief architect of Black Shark went on to add that 5G gaming smartphones require more complex and dedicated power systems over those of other flagships. It is true to some degree considering the power draw and heats the newer and faster bandwidth is capable of causing. The chief event even heavily implied to vote for the 65W + 5,000mAh battery variant, which all but confirms the configuration Black Shark will offer.

A company generally never offers options with numbers or specs that are greater than what will eventually be offered, so it’s safe to expect that the Black Shark 3 will sport a 5,000mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging. Additionally, other leaks and reports have revealed that the gaming smartphone will support SA and NSA dual mode 5G as well. The display is expected to feature 2K resolution and offer a 120Hz refresh rate.

Black Shark 2 pro

Under the hood, the Black Shark 3 will likely feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with the X55 5G modem. For memory, an LPDDR5 flash chip alongside UFS 3.0 is expected as well. Going by the popular flagship features, Wi-Fi 6 may also be included along with NFC. Notably, due to the ongoing epidemic caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, the smartphone will be launched during an online live streaming event.
