Ather introduces affordable variant of 450X e-scooter, Ather 450 Plus discontinued

Ather Energy has made the Ather 450X electric scooter more accessible to the masses by introducing a more affordable variant priced just under Rs 1 lakh. While the entry-level model shares the same electric motor and battery pack as its premium version, some advanced features such as fast charging, riding modes, and connected technology have been left out. Moreover, the introduction of this variant marks the end of the Ather 450 Plus in the company’s stable.

The base variant of Ather 450X comes with a price tag of Rs 98,079 (ex-showroom New Delhi, after FAME II and state subsidies) and can be upgraded with more features using the Pro Pack, which costs an additional Rs 30,364. The Pro Pack-equipped Ather 450X comes with a 5-year/60,000km warranty for the battery pack, while the base variant gets a 3-year/30,000km warranty. Both variants come with a 3-year/30,000km warranty on the vehicle and the charger. The Ather 450X is available in six colour options, including True Red, Cosmic Black, Space Grey, Lunar Grey, Salt Green, and Still White.

Mechanically, the Ather 450X base variant remains almost identical to the premium version and features a 6.2kW motor and 3.7kWh battery pack. The electric scooter provides a claimed range of 143km and a top speed of 90kmph. However, the base variant does not support fast charging and could take up to 15 hours and 20 minutes to charge the battery fully. The entry-level model also misses out on ride modes, park assist, hill-hold assist, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS navigation, live tracking, and OTA updates.

The Ather 450X with the Pro Pack gets all these features, allowing for faster charging time of just 5 hours and 40 minutes. With the Pro Pack, the Ather 450X also gets a 5-year/60,000km battery warranty, in addition to the other warranties. The purchase of the Pro Pack is optional and comes at an extra cost.

Ather sees 26% increase in e-scooter registrations while market falls 24% in India

The electric vehicle market has been rising globally and while many auto manufacturers are focusing on EV cars, some Asian markets, like India, are more focused on the two-wheelers or e-scooters.

Now, a new report from Business Standard, citing VAHAN data coming from India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, claims that eight companies that represent 95 percent of the market, have registered 32,680 electric scooters for the month of May 2022.

The numbers represent a decline of 24 percent month-to-month as in the month of April, the companies had registered 43,098 e-scooters. As per the analysts, the drop is because of the sudden rise earlier which indicated an early pent-up desire for such vehicles, which was manifested in large bookings.

The major causes for the drop are believed to be concerns about the safety of such vehicles as there have been reports about electric scooters catching fire. Other reasons include chip shortages and supply difficulties, as well as low demand seasonality.

Ather, one of the early entrants in this sector, witnessed a 26 percent increase in EV registrations in May. A report from Rushlane claims that the company sold 3,787 units in May 2022, 8 units more were sold compared to last month.

Ola Electric, which was the leading brand last month, has lost the pole position to Ather. It reported 8,704 registrations, representing a 31 percent drop compared to the previous month. On the other hand, Okinawa had 8,894 EV registrations, which turns out to be a 19 percent decrease from April. Bajaj Auto and TVS do not post their numbers individually.

The Indian electric vehicle market has seen increasing figures in the last few years. So much so that, many local makers have already shifted and are shifting to the EV sector in the country. Ather, which is currently India’s top electric scooter maker, has already captured a big chunk of the market. Now, as per new reports, the company is planning to increase its production to 1 million EVs a year, thanks to the increasing demand.

The electric vehicle demand has soared in the last few years, however, it still captures only 1% of the total Indian motorbike and scooter market. However, because fuel costs have surged and purchasers see no significant long-term pricing differences between an EV and a gasoline vehicle, the sector is projected to experience continuous expansion, with EVs soon dominating the motorbike and scooter market.

Considering this factor, Ather’s CEO Tarun Mehta has aimed to ramp up EV production. Mehta plans to increase the company’s annual production to 1 million scooters. This will be way higher than the current production of 400,000. The company also aims to install 5,000 fast chargers across the streets of India and set up over 600 stores in the country.

Evidently, for ramping the production and gearing for more EV infrastructure, the company needs more funds. As of now, the company has raised Rs. 1,200 crores ever since its emergence back in 2013. The major investors were HeroMotoCorp and Tiger Global.

This time around, Mehta aims to raise way more funding, but unfortunately, he hasn’t revealed the exact figures needed. However, rumors have it that Ather plans to raise a total of $133 million. Out of which, it has already raised $56 million(Rs. 420 crores) so far from Hero MotoCorp.

Apart from electric scooters, Mehta is also interested in other commercial vehicles. He said, “The next thing that excites me is trucks and buses – it is low volume but massive energy consumption.”

Ather hikes prices of its 450X and 450 Plus electric scooters in India

Ather Energy has just raised the prices of its 450 series of electric scooters in India. This includes the 450X and 450 Plus models, which have seen an average price hike of 5,500 INR (roughly 75 US Dollars).

Keep in mind that the exact amount may vary based on the state you live in since EV subsidies maybe different between states. According to the EV maker, the rise in price is due to the hike in input costs. Notably, the surge in price was handled by charging buyers an amount of around 5,500 INR for the Ather Dot portable charger, which was previously available for just 1 INR.

So now, the new price of the Ather 450 Plus is around 109,000 INR (roughly 1,470 US Dollars) while the higher end 129,000 INR (roughly 1,740 US Dollars) after subsidies in big cities like Mumbai. On the other hand, in cities like Bangalore, the prices of the top end 450X variant electric scooter is around 151,000 INR (roughly 2,040 US Dollars). Despite the prices of the electric scooter rising, there are no changes with the scooters in regards to design or hardware.

As of right now, the 450 Plus costs around 14,600 INR (roughly 200 US Dollars) more than the Ola S1 in Mumbai, while the 450X electric scooter is around 3,600 INR (roughly 50 US Dollars) more expensive than the Ola S1 Pro. For those unaware, the 450 series of electric scooters are manufactured in India, which has recently started ramping up production at its plant in South India.

Indian electric vehicle company Ather Energy held a launch event in India earlier today where the company unveiled its latest electric scooter. The smart scooter is dubbed Ather 450x. The new model is an upgrade over the Ather 450.

Regarding the features, the Ather 450x smart electric scooter comes with a design similar to its predecessor but some improvements in its configuration. Of particular note, is the built-in 4G and WiFi support onboard. This is made possible due to the Snapdragon 212 chipset that is onboard the system. The chipset is backed by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The scooter packs a 7-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display with LED-backlit. Providing the interface is Android Open Source OS (AOSP). There is also Bluetooth connectivity onboard.

The smart scooter also has an impressive range of 85 km and crams a new 21700 battery inside. The scooter also comes with one of the quickest accelerations as it is capable of going from 0-60 km/hr in 6.5 seconds. It also has faster charging at 1.5km/ minute. The 450X comes in Plus and Pro versions with minor variations in peak power among others.

The Ather 450x is available in three colour variants; White with Green, Grey with Yellow, and Green with Orange. As for the price, the Smart scooter alone costs Rs. 99,000 in India but there are new Plus and Pro subscriptions that you can choose. You can choose to pay a monthly subscription of Rs. 1699 or 1999 per month, respectively. The company also stated that lease and financing options will be available. The scooter will go on sale from July 2020 in Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.
