<p>Chip designer <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/arm">ARM </a>just unveiled the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/cortex">Cortex</a>-X925 <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/cpu">CPU </a>and Immortalis G925 <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/gpu">GPU</a>, promising a significant leap in mobile performance for flagship <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/smartphones">smartphones</a> arriving later this year.</p>

<h3>The new Cortex CPU has a huge 36% increase in single-core performance </h3>

<p>The Cortex-X925 CPU boasts a staggering 36% increase in single-core performance and a 41% improvement in <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/ai">AI </a>tasks. It also introduces a new generation of Cortex-A microarchitectures for &#8220;small&#8221; cores, offering better performance and efficiency.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="840" height="472" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6.webp?x10805" alt="ARM Cortex" class="wp-image-628547" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6.webp 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6-696x391.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/e4007713-c26b-4331-a5d9-d592b29f17e6-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></figure></div>

<p>The Immortalis G925 GPU lives up to its name, delivering a 37% boost in graphics performance, a 52% improvement in ray tracing for complex objects, and a 34% enhancement in AI workloads. Remarkably, it achieves this power increase while consuming 30% less energy.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img src="https://img.ithome.com/newsuploadfiles/2024/5/ad8f3d45-192b-4f45-9add-7d2b50e782f3.jpg?x-bce-process=image/quality,q_75/format,f_webp" alt="" /></figure></div>

<p>For faster device launches, ARM provides manufacturers with an &#8220;optimized layout&#8221; for easier integration of these new designs. While specific brands are unconfirmed, phones with these cores are expected by year&#8217;s end. <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek </a>has already committed to incorporating them into their next-generation <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/dimensity">Dimensity </a>9400 chipset, potentially making it a unique powerhouse in the smartphone market. </p>

These new processors arrive as the company seeks to shift to 64 bit only architecture by the year 2023. This also marks the company moving forward with the ARMv9 from the older ARMv8.</p>
<p>With the new architecture, the company is planning on moving to 64 bit exclusively by 2023. Furthermore, the firm will also be working with its partners to ensure that the new ecosystem is ready to also discontinue support for 32 bit apps, which it expects to complete by the end of this year. As per official notes, the new CPU and GPU designs will be featured in upcoming chipsets along with new support hardware to group them all together for various configurations that will be used from smartphones, laptops, smartphones, and other products as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-391582 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1.jpg?x10805" alt="ARM" width="1200" height="626" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-768x401.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-696x363.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-1068x557.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_001-1-805x420.jpg 805w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>The Cortex-X2 is the 2nd generation of the latest high performance ARM cores and promises a 16 percent speed boost over an X1 core, which was also built on the same node and ran on a similar frequency. While the new design has just been announced, chips that feature the Cortex-X2 are expected to hit the market by next year. Furthermore, ARM has also optimized the X2&#8217;s peak performance and has doubled its machine learning performance while its single threaded performance has also risen by about 40 percent compared to a 15W Intel i5-1135G7.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-391583 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005.jpg?x10805" alt="ARM" width="1200" height="626" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-768x401.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-696x363.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-1068x557.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_005-805x420.jpg 805w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>Similarly, the company also unveiled new designs for its big cores of the A series. Although, as the company has launched the new X core, the new A series has been moved to a more mid range position. However, the the A710 still manages to offer 10 percent improvement over the A78 (again on the same node and frequency) alongside 30 percent better energy efficiency. While this seems lackluster in comparison to the higher end design, the company adds that the A710 paired with the Mali-G710 GPU will see a 33 percent boost in CPU performance and 20 percent improvement in GPU performance in gaming workloads.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-391581 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1.jpg?x10805" alt="ARM" width="1200" height="626" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-768x401.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-1024x534.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-696x363.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-1068x557.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/gsmarena_002-1-805x420.jpg 805w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>This chipset will also be 15 percent more efficient compared to the older A78 and G78 based chipsets, which implies a major generational improvement. Furthermore, the company also unveiled a new design for its little cores too, with the Cortex-A510 as well. It arrives with a 35 percent faster than the older A55 designs and offers about 20 percent better energy efficiency along with 3x machine learning performance as well. This makes it close in performance to the older big A cores, which is an improvement for mid range smartphones.</p>

<p>According to <a href="https://www.clien.net/service/board/park/16084706" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>CLIEN.NET</em></a> (Via <a href="https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-custom-silicon-purported-to-be-in-the-pipeline-with-sporting-an-ARM-Cortex-X2-and-ARM-Mali-GPU-cores.535906.0.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>NotebookCheck</em></a>), ARM has yet to announce the Cortex X2, although, the new architecture is expected to be unveiled later this year. Similar to the partnership between the Chinese and South Korean tech giant, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm</a> is also expected to adopt the new v9 architecture for its upcoming flagship SoCs. Even Samsung would likely use the new cores for its competing Exynos based processors as well.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the report also adds that Xiaomi would also seek to continue using ARM Mali GPUs over the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/26/samsung-windows-10-pc-exynos-chip-amd-graphics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung and AMD&#8217;s combined offerings</a>, due to limited units that might be available. In recent times, many companies are moving over to custom chipsets in the Android smartphone market. With Apple having <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/23/apple-silicon-to-power-future-macs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">moved its Mac series of PCs to its custom silicon</a>, even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/04/03/google-pixel-6-series-may-feature-its-own-whitechapel-chips-and-not-snapdragon-soc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Google is reported on working on a custom &#8216;Whitechapel&#8217; SoC</a> for its upcoming <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/pixel-6/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pixel 6</a> series, which is expected to launch in Autumn of this year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-137811 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473.png?x10805" alt="Xiaomi" width="840" height="473" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Surge-S1-840x473-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt. However, we had previously reported on the Chinese smartphone maker showing interest in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/30/xiaomi-partner-mediatek-custom-smartphone-chips/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">developing custom silicon based chips</a>, and this might be one of its efforts regarding the matter. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available.</p>

The new Cortex A75 processor core succeeds the powerful Cortex A73 cores that&#8217;s found inside many high-end chipsets today. The Cortex A55 is one of the most awaited upgrades as it succeeds the super popular Cortex A53 core that&#8217;s found in millions of smartphones. There&#8217;s a new GPU announced as well, the brand new Mali-G72 succeeding the G71 core announced last year.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A-series-lineup.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133620" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A-series-lineup.png?x10805" alt="Cortex A series lineup" width="840" height="470" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A-series-lineup.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A-series-lineup-300x168.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A-series-lineup-768x430.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></a></p>
<h3></h3>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>DynamicIQ </strong></h3>
<p>While these are important upgrades, what&#8217;s even more exciting is the announcement of the new DynamicIQ, which has been in the works for the past few years. If you are wondering why it&#8217;s important, note that it is the next generation tech in the super popular big.LITTLE architecture that&#8217;s currently used by most of the smartphone chipsets in the market including Snapdragon and Helio SoCs.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DynamicIQ.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133625" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DynamicIQ.png?x10805" alt="DynamicIQ" width="840" height="469" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DynamicIQ.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DynamicIQ-300x168.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/DynamicIQ-768x429.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></a></p>
<p>Considering how the big.LITTLE architecture was announced around 5 years back, it was about time that we got an upgrade to the architecture better suited for new generation requirements. One of the major upgrades in DynamicIQ architecture is the ability to mix different CPUs in a cluster. At present, the big.LITTLE architecture supports multiple clusters but each cluster would have just one type of CPU. For example, if there are two clusters, you can have Cortex A72 in one cluster and Cortex A53 in another cluster. But you couldn&#8217;t have them both together in one single cluster.</p>
<p>That changes with DynamicIQ architecture. This means you can have multiple CPUs in one single cluster and the number of CPUs in a single cluster has been increased to eight from the previous four limit in big.Little. So, you can have an octa-core chipset even with just one cluster. In fact, ARM predicts that a number of mid-range SoCs could go for an octa-core single cluster design with multiple CPU combinations. For example, Cortex A75 and Cortex A55 could be used in 1+7 or 2+ 6 or 4 + 4 or even just 1 + 4 combinations. With the support for multiple CPUs in a cluster, you could have lots of combinations.</p>
<p>ARM further predicts one particular combination to be popular among mid-range SoCs &#8212; Cortex A72 and Cortex A55 in 1 + 7 combination. This particular combination improves single thread performance up to 2.41x and multi-thread up to 1.42x as compared to an octa-core Cortex A53 SoC.</p>
<p>Another important feature of DynamicIQ is the presence of a DynamicIQ Shared Unit (DSU) which houses the L3 cache, takes care of power management as well as ACP and Peripheral port interfacing.</p>
<p>Note that as of now, only the newly announced Cortex A75 and Cortex A55 support DynamicIQ.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Cortex A75</strong></h3>
<p>This is the next generation core that will power the flagships of late 2017 and 2018. The Cortex A75 builds upon the thermal efficiency of A73 and boosts the performance. So, Cortex A75 offers more than 20 percent improvement in performance in a number of scenarios as compared to last year&#8217;s Cortex A73. This is achieved while maintaining the same levels of sustained performance. Also, instead of focusing on increasing power efficiency, ARM seems to have focused on keeping the same level of efficiency as the A73 while improving performance.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-performance-.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133624" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-performance-.png?x10805" alt="Cortex A75 performance" width="1024" height="579" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-performance-.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-performance--300x170.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-performance--768x434.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>The Cortex A75 core is not just meant for smartphones as there are a number of large screen devices that could use this powerful chip, like Chromebooks and convertibles.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Cortex A55</strong></h3>
<p>The Cortex A55 is a much better upgrade, offering up to twice the boost in performance for memory-bound tasks as compared to the old Cortex A53. But for typical CPU usage tasks, the new processor core offers up to 20 improvement in performance, much like the Cortex A75.  Efficiency is also given due importance as the Cortex-A55 comes with 15 percent improvement in power efficiency as compared to its predecessor.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133621" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance.png?x10805" alt="Cortex A55 performance" width="1150" height="650" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance.png 1150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance-300x170.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance-768x434.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A55-performance-1024x579.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1150px) 100vw, 1150px" /></a></p>
<p>Remember that both, Cortex A55 and Cortex A75 are built on the new ARM v8.2-A architecture and ARM adds that these CPU cores are specifically designed to handle new age requirements like AI and machine learning.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>Mali-G72 GPU</strong></h3>
<p>The current generation Mali-G71 GPU is found a number of high-end smartphones like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-p10/">Huawei P10</a> and even the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8/">Samsung Galaxy S8</a> powered by the Exynos 8895.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Mali-G72-GPU.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133626" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Mali-G72-GPU.png?x10805" alt="Mali-G72 GPU" width="840" height="351" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Mali-G72-GPU.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Mali-G72-GPU-300x125.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Mali-G72-GPU-768x321.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></a></p>
<p>The Mali-G72 improves energy efficiency by up to 25 percent as compared to Mali-G71. ARM has also improved performance density by up to 20 percent. This essentially means that you can put more GPU cores in the same die area. This could translate into more cores being packed inside flagship smartphone GPUs. At present, the Kirin 960 uses Mali-G71 MP8 GPU (eight-cores) and Samsung&#8217;s Exynos 8895 comes with Mali-G71 MP20 (20 cores). The G71 and G72 GPU support up to 32 cores and we may finally see top-end phones using more GPU cores inside its SoC to boost graphic performance.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-core.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133623" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-core.png?x10805" alt="Cortex A75 core" width="800" height="470" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-core.png 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-core-300x176.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Cortex-A75-core-768x451.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></p>
<p>It may take a while for chipmakers to implement the new DynamicIQ architecture, but we can expect new smartphones with Cortex A75 and A55 cores sometime early 2018. Best case scenario would be late 2017, but we&#8217;ll have to wait and see if new chips can release that early.</p>
