Samsung Registers ‘Expandable Screen’ Patents in Europe

Following the trademark registrations of the Flex Magic and Flex Magic Pixel in South Korea, these have also appeared on Europe’s trademark listing website, EUIPO. The two patents come along with a slight description, which confirms it is an OLED display for smartphones, AR devices, and other big display appliances.

Samsung “Flex Magic” and “Flex Magic Pixel” Patents on EUIPO

Alongside the patent name, the company also applied for a logo trademark that depicts “Flex Magic Pixel” text along with a square object in the center. There’s another patent with the text “Flex magic” and a similar object in the center.

These appear to be OLED display panels for video monitors, televisions, smartphones, wearables, smart glasses, reality glasses, and tablet monitors. Importantly, it is labeled as an “expandable screen for smartphones” and “smartphones in the shape of a watch”. Considering the description, we are quite close to the mass availability of the expandable display technology.

We have already seen several projects, specifically a Flex Note device that was put on display during the SID 2022 Display Week held in San Jose California, USA, last year. There’s another Samsung Flex Gaming handheld concept showcased at CES 2023. A staff was demonstrating the folding screen with the controller peripheral.

The appearance of the Flex Magic Pixel and Flex Magic trademarks at the EUIPO and South Korea’s Certification Agency confirms something special with an expandable display in 2024. AR products are already in line, but a new smartphone could come close to reality.

There could be multiple use cases for such expandable displays, as these may change the standard form factor of several electronic devices. It may be quite an evolution, especially for smartphones.

Vivo’s BlueOS and BlueLM trademarks are listed on EUIPO

At the 2023 Vivo Developer Conference, the company introduced a self-developed Operating System – BlueOS. Primarily meant for smart wearables and smart home devices, the OS uses Rust programming language. It supports multiple Posix standard kernels, Linux Kernels, and a special AI service engine for compatibility with large AI models. The Vivo BlueOS trademarks have just surfaced on EUIPO which confirms its global launch in the coming days.

There are a total of four trademark listings that appeared on EUIPO, including Vivo BlueOS, BlueOS, Vivo BlueLM, and BlueLM. All these are trademarks for the name or “Word”. The BlueOS and Vivo BlueOS are described as “Operating systems for mobile phones, smartphones, smart watches, smart glasses, tablet computers, notebook computers and smart televisions.“

Meanwhile, the BlueLM seems like an AI assistant that will allow the system to generate text, and video, understand text, organize and collect data, and simulate conversations. Further, the trademark description describes it as “
downloadable computer programs and downloadable computer software for creating and generating text; artificial production of human speech and text; machine-learning-based language and speech processing software; natural language processing, generation, understanding, and analysis; collecting, analyzing, and organizing data in the field of deep learning; simulating conversations.”

Vivo’s BlueOS Features

BlueXLink Connectivity: The OS facilitates seamless data transfer between multiple devices through BlueXLink, enabling efficient connectivity and data sharing between various devices.
NFC Support: BlueOS supports various functionalities, including transportation cards, access cards, and NFC car keys, making it a versatile operating system for different applications.

Vivo will launch Vivo Watch 3 based on BlueOS on November 13 in China.

Xiaomi HyperOS trademark listing appears on EUIPO

Ditching MIUI 14, Xiaomi confirmed its new in-house skin – HyperOS a few days ago. The new indigenously developed Hyper OS seems to first debut with the Xiaomi 14 series. It appears the company aims to develop a whole new user experience by incorporating Hyper OS with custom SoC (in the future). Surprisingly, the new OS Skin trademark listing surfaced on EUIPO which does confirm its global availability.

Xiaomi Inc. files the trademark and the whole case is represented by Lane Intellectual Property (Ireland) Limited. Under the description, the new OS Skin is categorized under multiple tags such as Computer software applications, downloadable; mobile software applications; processors/central processing units, operating system programs, and much more.

Considering these categories, the new HyperOS seems to align with Xiaomi’s rumored plan for custom SoCs. The Hyper OS trademark is currently in the initial stages and may take some time before actual registration.

While confirming the HyperOS, Xiaomi Global’s VP said the new OS Skin will eventually replace the MIUI in the coming months or years. It will first launch with the Xiaomi 14 Series, while other devices will receive an OTA update. Details about the compatibility with old Xiaomi smartphones are yet unconfirmed, but there’s a leaked list of smartphones that are expected to receive the update. Even information about its availability on Poco and Redmi smartphones is currently unavailable.

Xiaomis CEO, Lei Jun further added that the new system architecture was “completely rewritten,” and will “prepare a public base for the Internet of Everything for tens of billions of devices and tens of billions of connections in the future.”

There will be improved customization features, fonts, templates, widget options, and more. The OS will not only run Smartphones but will power its IoTs, other wearable devices, and the upcoming first-ever electric vehicle too. As per recent leaks, the HyperOS seems to offer a more streamlined UX than the MIUI 14.

HyperOS is expected to launch on October 27.

Huawei trademarks Glide Keyboard for Smartphones and Tablets

Huawei has recently filed for a new trademark. This is for a ‘Glide Keyboard’ that is registered for smartphones and tablets. The company filed for the patent with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office).

The trademark was spotted by LetsGoDigital who found that it was filed under category Class 9. Its description stated that it is a “computer keyboard; tablet; keyboard cover; projection keyboard; mobile phone keyboard; central processing unit (CPU).” From this, we can somewhat speculate that it is form of keyboard and tablets with the glide suggesting a possible sliding out mechanism for a keyboard. On the other hand, the most notable aspect of the description was the word ‘projection keyboard.’

This is where the trademark gets interesting as it suggests that the Chinese tech giant might be working on a virtual keyboard that can be projected through laser beams. In other words, users will have a full keyboard at their disposal without having the need to carry a physical one, which can be especially useful when traveling light. Unfortunately, finer details regarding this trademark is currently unknown and we can only make assumptions regarding its purpose. OnePlus may soon enter the tablet category

The Android tablet market had been rapidly declining for the past few years. However, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the demand for them has soared as people are continuing their job and education from home. As a result, old tablet makers like Xiaomi are expected to make a comeback in the second half of 2021. Similarly, new players are reported to enter the segment. The latest brand expected to launch tablets in the near future is OnePlus.

OnePlus is part of OPLUS, which includes OPPO and realme. The latter two brands are being reported to release tablets for months. In fact, realme has even confirmed that its first tablet will be called ‘realme Pad’.

Now, out of the blue, an EUIPO trademark filing by OnePlus reveals that its tablets could be marketed as ‘OnePlus Pad’. Unfortunately, the listing does not reveal anything else.

Since OnePlus is now a sub-brand of OPPO, we can expect the tablets from these three brands to be identical in some way or another. They may run a common ColorOS fork designed specifically for tablets. However, they could ship with some additional features to differentiate from each other.

For years, there have been no good Android tablets in the budget and mid-range segments. This year, Lenovo showed us that companies can do produce affordable tablets like Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 (review) with high-end specs.

Hopefully, the new breed of Android tablets from existing players as well as new entrants make a difference in the tablet market, which is dominated by Apple iPads.

Samsung trademarks the “Z Slide” moniker with the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)

Tech giant Samsung could be lining up another smartphone in its Z series, with the discovery of a trademark filing for the “Z Slide” moniker apparently for a device still under development. The trademark listing from the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) indicated that the device bearing the specified name was under Class 9 (mobile communications device, possibly a smartphone).

Before now, Samsung had also trademarked the Z Roll extendable display device from the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). While the Z Roll will have an extendable display that expands horizontally, the Z Slide will come with a vertically expanding display, which could mean that the device could be a smartphone.

There has been an increase in research and development of extendable display smartphones by various OEMs, and Samsung has remained at the forefront of research along that line. Just last week, the display arm of Samsung highlighted some of the work-in-progress displays slated for incorporation into Samsung’s future smartphones. These included the S-Foldable panel, which is the likely component for the Z Slide, when operational.

The 7.2-inch S-Foldable display will support multiple fold patterns, which will be a boon for device versatility. The Z Slide could be a rollable version of the Z Flip, which will deploy some innovative technology in the mechanism that would drive the operation of the retractable display. It was earlier reported that a chain-link system could be used to maintain the performance and durability of the flexible display.

As per possible rollout information and price, it is unlikely that the device will be unveiled this year, possibly sometime in 2022. Samsung is set to launch a couple of foldable devices within the third quarter of 2021. It is after these devices have been released that we’ll look forward to the launch of the Z Roll or Z Slide.
