BOE A, a leading display manufacturer based in China has announced impressive growth projections for its flexible AMOLED shipments in 2023. According to a conference call reported by IT Home on July 3, the company expects to ship nearly 80 million pieces of flexible AMOLED, marking a significant increase of over 30% compared to the previous year. BOE A has set an ambitious annual shipment target of over 120 million pieces, demonstrating its commitment to dominating the flexible AMOLED market. The company plans to achieve this goal by focusing on increasing the proportion of high-end product shipments within the flexible AMOLED business, which will subsequently enhance the overall profitability of its product portfolio.

In addition to its strides in flexible AMOLED, BOE has made notable advancements in the vehicle display business. The company has introduced cutting-edge display technologies such as flexible AMOLED, Mini LED, and BD CELL in its vehicle display products. Moreover, BOE’s Chengdu vehicle display base, which commenced production in 2022, is expected to produce approximately 15 million vehicle displays annually. This production capacity encompasses LCD vehicle display modules ranging from 5 inches to 35 inches, providing a comprehensive range of options for automobile manufacturers.

BOE’s commitment to innovation and growth was further emphasized at the Global Innovation Partners Conference · 2023. During the event, the company announced a staggering investment of over 50 billion yuan in technology research and development over the next three years. This substantial investment will enable BOE to create more than 100 solutions tailored to specific market segments, solidifying its position as a leading provider of display technologies.

One of the standout innovations unveiled at the conference was BOE’s world-first smart cockpit. It’s impressive that BOE has independently developed the cockpit’s appearance, display, hardware boards, and software systems. Earlier this week, BOE announced that its 6th generation of flexible AMOLED production line has just entered mass production. The site for the advanced display technology facility is situated in the southwestern city of Chongqing, China.

According to a PanDaily report, the known Chinese display maker is planning on expanding its flexible displays portfolio. The cutting edge production line will join other manufacturing sites in Chengdu and Mianyang. During the mass production ceremony, BOE President, Liu Xiaodong stated that “In the current information and digital age, new application markets such as smart mobile terminals, smart wearable devices, and smart connected cars are showing explosive growth trends. This is increasing the demand for high end display technologies such as flexible displays.”

As of right now, the company already has 6 key projects operating in Chongqing, with the latest 6th generation flexible AMOLED production line being one of them. It even has its 8.5 generation of TFT LCD panel line and the BOE Chongqing Smart System Innovation Center in the region as well. All of these facilities combined are estimated to include around 86 billion Yuan (roughly 13.5 billion US Dollars) in terms of investment.

Furthermore, the latest 6th gen flexible AMOLED production line covers a massive area of 970,000 square meters. This facility is also independently designed and developed by BOE, with the panels being produced set to target small and medium sized high end display markets. In other words, we can expect to see the new flexible panels in a number of new consumer electronic products sometime next year.

Vivo has finally confirmed that it’s bringing the X60 series of Smartphones in China on December 29. The event will begin at 7:30 AM Beijing Time(UTC+08:00). The smartphone series is expected to bring improvements in display, Camera, Performance, and more, over the predecessor. Ahead of the launch, let’s delve into the possible specs and price of the Vivo X60 devices.

Vivo X60 Series- The Basics

The Vivo X60 series is currently speculated to have three devices- Two of them(X60, X60 Pro) are almost confirmed with specs and renders while the third one is rumored(X60 Pro+). As usual, they will succeed Vivo’s X50 series of smartphones.

Precisely, the new year’s X series from Vivo will have three significant changes from the predecessor. First, and foremost is the punch-hole display. Although Vivo X50 also has a punch-hole screen, the X60 series will bring it over to the center. With this, it’s nearly the first non-Samsung device to launch with a centered punch-hole AMOLED display.

This is because Fujitsu, a month ago, prematurely announced the Fujitsu Arrows NX9 F-52A with a centered punch-hole AMOLED display. Technically, it should be the first one but since its launch is way far ahead on January 31, 2021, Vivo has a chance here. The next big thing in the X60 series is the strategic partnership with ZEISS.

Accordingly, the X60 series will be the first product of this partnership and is likely a headstart to take on the likes of rivals like Huawei–Leica‘s tie-up. Beyond software algorithms like ZEISS 3D PoP(bokeh render), the devices will have Vario-Tessar lenses with  T*Anti-reflective coating.

It will probably retain the Sony sensor, get a wider aperture wide-angle lens, and Samsung‘s Flexible E3 OLED screen. The third most significant change is the use of Samsung Exynos chipset on the X60 unlike the Qualcomm SoC on the X50 series.

That said, other expected features are a Glass build, SA/NSA 5G, Wi-Fi, dual-SIM, Type-C port, LPDDR4x/5x RAM, UFS 2.1/3 storage, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, BeiDou, camera features like OIS, EIS 4K video recording, optical zoom(Periscope-X60 Pro), bokeh, OriginOS(Android 11)and more.

Specs and Features(Expected)

Vivo X60

Display – First of the series, the Vivo X60 is expected to sport a 6.56-inch FHD+ AMOLED centered punch-hole display. It will support a 120Hz refresh rate and resolution up to 2376×1080 pixels. Also, this time, Vivo is said to experiment with two versions of X60- one with a flat and another with a curved display.

Dimensions– Although this is yet to be known, we can expect similarities to Vivo X50, considering it has a similar-sized display. Hence the dimensions would be somewhere around 159.54 × 75.39mm. Further, the device is also expected to be the thinnest 5G smartphone with a 7.3xmm thickness

Processor, Memory- Under the hood, the device will sport Samsung’s Exynos 1080 SoC paired with 8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage. With this, Vivo is making a transition back to the Exynos as the X50 had Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G SoC chipset.

Camera – For cameras, the rear triple-camera setup will host a 48MP f/1.6 main lens(IMX598), 13MP ultra-wide, and 8MP portrait sensor. Upfront it will likely have a 32MP selfie shooter.

Other expected features include a 4,300mAh battery with 33W fast charging, three color variants- Blue Gradient, Black, and Shimmer.

Vivo X60 Pro

Display– Unlike the X60, the Pro variant will only have a curved display variant. It will likely be the same 6.56-inch FHD+ Flexible AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 2376×1080 pixel resolution.

Dimensions– Just like the sibling, the Vivo X60 Pro will mostly have dimensions similar to 158.46 × 72.80mm and a comparable thickness if not higher.

Processor, Memory– Same as the X60, the Pro is likely to get the Exynos 1080 SoC. However, unlike the sibling, reports say this will only have a 12GB RAM, 256GB storage.

Cameras-  An unboxing video shows that Vivo X60 Pro will crank it up a notch and include a Periscope lens. The expected lineup of sensors include 48MP f/1.6 main lens(IMX598), 13MP ultra-wide, 13MP portrait sensor, 8MP Periscope(likely with a 5x Optical, 60x Digital Zoom), and a 32MP selfie snapper.

Other expected specs include a 4,200mAh battery with 33W fast charging, two colorways- Blue Gradient and Black.

Mysterious X60 Pro+

Last year, the X50 series included a premium Vivo X50 Pro+ variant with an exclusive Primary camera and flagship processor. Similarly, reports say that Vivo will do it once again by launching a device with a similar design as the Pro, but few tweaks in specs.

The Vivo X60 Pro+ is expected to feature a Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with faster LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 storage, a Samsung GN1 50MP 1/1.3-inch CIS(CMOS Image Sensor) along with ZEISS goodies, Hi-Fi DAC, and more.

Price

The Vivo X50 series consisting of X50, X50 Pro, X50 Pro+ began from 3,498($534), 4,298($656), and 4,998 yuan($763) respectively at launch. Hence, we can expect somewhat similar pricing to the successors. However, we would advise you to take it with a pinch of salt and wait for the official price on December 29.

What comes after foldable smartphones? Visionox believes it’ll be rollable smartphones that’ll take the spotlight after the foldable craze. And we have got a glimpse of how it could look like at the recent World Conference in the Display Industry. At the three-day event held in Hefei, Anhui Province of China, Visionox showcased its rollable flexible AMOLED panel alongside a couple of other interesting products like a foldable clamshell smartphone.

Visionox said that the rollable display design will greatly reduce the area taken up by the display, even less than foldables. The Visionox rollable display demoed at the event had a dynamic curl radius of 7mm and features on-cell touch display integration technology and self-lamination. However, it’s clear that this technology will still take some time before it matures. The demo unit at the event was still in the form of the raw display and not installed on a smartphone. It’s worth adding that companies like BOE and LG Display have demoed rollable panels in the past.

Apart from the rollable display, Visionox also demoed an interesting clamshell foldable smartphone. This was even more exciting because it was in the form of an actual smartphone that could be folded in half at the center. Unlike the Motorola Razr, this one looked like a regular Android smartphone with the only exception that it could be folded into half at the center.

The foldable clamshell smartphone features a regular 6.47-inch flexible AMOLED display with on-cell technology. Visionox adds that there won’t be a crease at the center when unfolded. The phone comes with a waterdrop notch on top and transforms into a 13.3mm thick phone in its folded form factor.

In addition to these two next-generation display products, Visionox also showcased a truly bezel-less smartphone. The phone features a tiny 1.5mm bezel at the bottom and 0.7mm bezels on the other three sides. The screen to body ratio is as high as 96.57%.
