Earlier last month, Honor launched the Honor Play 4T in China. The handset comes powered by new Kirin 710A SoC. This chip is manufactured by SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) and not TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) like most chips designed by HiSilicon. To celebrate this partnership as well as SMIC’s 20th anniversary, employees of SMIC received a special edition of Honor Play 4T.

The Honor Play 4T Special Edition has the exact same specifications as the standard retail unit. But additionally, it features SMIC’s 20th anniversary logo on the back with ‘Powered by SMIC FinFET’ text below it. This version of the handset has been gifted to all the employees of SMIC in Shanghai. There’s a less chance of this variant to be made available for regular customers.

Anyway, the partnership is more important to both the firms that the special edition Honor Play 4T. Until now, the Kirin 710 series (Kirin 710, Kirin 710F) was manufactured by TSMC using its 12nm FinFET process technology. But the newly released Kirin 710A uses 14nm FinFET process technology by SMIC. The new variant also slightly differs in the clock speeds but the CPU cores are similar.

One would be wondering why celebrate in manufacturing a inferior chip. The answer to this is  all the IP (Intellectual Property) used in designing and producing this chipset is said to be 100% Chinese. Thus, paving a way for Huawei to minimize its dependence on other foreign companies.

That doesn’t mean the Chinese telecom giant will drop partnership with TSMC anytime soon. The Taiwanese chipmaker is the market leader with the best technology. It will be manufacturing HiSilcon Kirin 1000 SoC using 5nm process to power phones like Huawei Mate 40 series later this year.

Honor has officially unveiled two new smartphones that are targeted at young people. The Honor Play 4T and Honor Play 4T Pro as they are called, come with impressive hardware and beautiful designs. Most of all, they are affordable with pricing starting at 1,199 yuan ($168).

Honor Play 4T- Specs, Features, Price

The Honor Play is the base model but that doesn’t make it a pushover. The device packs a 6.39-inch display with a waterdrop notch having a diameter of 4.5mm. The use of the waterdrop notch and a bezel-less design allows the screen ratio to get up to 90%. The display also bags the TUV Rheinland’s Blu-ray eye certification.

The Play 4T is powered by the old Hisilicon Kirin 710 chipset which is a 12nm chipset. The models start at 6GB RAM and 128GB storage as there won’t be a 64GB variant.

On the rear camera aspect, the Honor Play 4T packs a similar triple camera setup as the Pro version. The sensors include a 48-megapixel sensor, an 8 mega-pixel ultra-wide angle and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The device is said to feature a rear-mounted camera sensor.

The Honor Play 4T comes in Magic Night Black and Blue Water Emerald colors.

Honor Play 4T Pro – Specs, Features, Price

The Honor Play 4T Pro packs a 6.3-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels and 20:9 aspect ratio. The display uses a waterdrop notch design which still remains my favourite notch design. The OLED display was fully utilized with the inclusion of an under-display fingerprint sensor.

The Honor Play 4T Pro is fired up by a Kirin 810 chipset which isn’t a 5G SoC. The chipset is still a powerful one, manufactured on a 7nm wafer. It features two large Cortex-A76 cores and six energy-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. The processor teams up with a Mali-G52 GPU to take care of the graphics. The GPU supports Kirin Gaming+ technology and fully upgrades the game experience through system-level AI FM scheduling technology. It supports 60fps high performance, HD image quality and GPU load optimization

In terms of AI, the Kirin 810 processor features a single-core Da Vinci architecture NPU which greatly improves the AI ​​computing power per unit area and fully stimulate the computing potential of the end-side AI. In addition, the processor is paired with 6GB / 8GB RAM options and 128GB storage.

In terms of photography, the Honor Play 4T series packs a triple rear camera setup housed in a rectangular module. The three sensors include; 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens + 2 megapixels depth of field sensor. In terms of color options, the Play 4T Pro has three hues: Magic Night Black, Blue Water Emerald, and Icelandic White.

As for the prices, the Honor Play 4T model which comes in 6GB + 128GB option is priced at 1,199 yuan ($168). On the other hand, the Honor Play 4T Pro 6GB + 128GB version is priced at 1499 yuan ($211), and the 8GB + 128GB version carries a price tag of 1699 yuan ($239).

The Honor Play 4T that has a model number of AKA-AL10 has a 6.39-inch IPS LCD punch-hole display. It offers HD+ resolution. It is expected to come in 4 GB and 6 GB RAM versions and storage choices like 64 GB and 128 GB in China.

When Honor announced the lunch date of Honor Play 4T series, the brand also appointed Wei Xialong as the new Product Manager of the series. Now, this executive has posted a selfie on his Weibo, which happens to slightly reveal the rear of the new handset in line with the teaser renders spotted on the product pre-order page.

As you can see from the picture posted by him, the upcoming Honor Play 4T / Pro will indeed have a vertical camera alignment like on a rectangular bump like most phones from the past few months. Although this picture does not reveal anything about the phone, we already know some of its specs from previous leaks and official teaser renders.

The Honor Play 4T will also be accompanied by a Pro variant with a major difference between the two being a 6.39-inches HD+ IPS LCD punch-hole panel with a traditional rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on the regular version and a  dew-drop notched 6.3-inches FHD+ OLED display with an in-screen fingerprint sensor on the Pro model.

Under the hood, the Pro variant is expected to feature the all-new Kirin 820 5G chipset, which recently debuted on the Honor 30S. On the other hand, the standard model will be powered by an unknown octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. Both devices will come in 6GB + 128GB configuration but the standard version will also be available in 4GB + 64GB in addition to 6GB + 256GB configuration of the Pro model.

They both will have the 4,000 mAh battery but the Pro variant will have support for 22.5W fast charging. The Honor Play 4T will be made official on April 9. Ahead of the launch, some of the known retailer sties of China such as JD, Suning and Tmall have started with the reservations of the Play 4T. Interestingly, the reservation pages on JD reveals that the company will be not only launching the Play 4T and Play 4T Pro phones.

The images that have surfaced on reservations pages show that there are two kinds of Play 4T. One of them has a waterdrop notch and under-display fingerprint sensor. This handset could be the Honor Play 4T Pro. The handset can be seen in black, green and gradient white colors.

On the other side, there is a variant that features a punch-hole screen and a conventional fingerprint sensor on its rear. This device is likely to debut as Honor Play 4T. Apart from green, the handset could be available in other color choices.

The image of the Honor Play 4T Pro resembles with the AQM-AL10 phone that was certified by TENAA telecom regulatory body of China in March. The TENAA listing revealed that it has a full HD+ 6.3-inch AMOLED display with 20:9 aspect ratio, Kirin 810 chipset, 6 GB / GB RAM, 128 GB / 256 GB storage, 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple cameras, 16-megapixel front camera and 4,000mAh battery with 22.5W rapid charging support.

The Honor 30 and Honor 30 Pro are scheduled to go official on April 15. Today, the Chinese firm took to Weibo to confirm that a new device called Honor Play 4T will go official on April 9.

The launch poster only confirms the Honor Play 4T moniker and does not reveal any details on its specifications. The Weibo post links to Wei Xialong who has been newly appointed as the Product Manager of the Play series. Xialong’s Weibo has a single post through which he has introduced himself. He stated that the “Play series is an interesting product series” (machine translated). There is no information available on the specifications of the Honor Play 4T smartphone. Hopefully, the Chinese firm will be teasing some of the features of the upcoming Honor Play 4T phone before making it official.
