Huawei has released the EMUI 12 update for some of its flagship-level offerings, namely the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro, and Mate 30 Pro with a number of new features.

The update for all of the devices carries version number 12.0.0.218 and comes with a package size of 1.04GB.

According to Huaweiblog (via Huawei Central), users currently on EMUI 11 can update to stable EMUI 12 easily through the said OTA update. EMUI 12 beta testers, on the other hand, will receive another EMUI 12 stable build sometime later.

EMUI 12 brings along a number of goodies such as granular adjustment for font, updated system UI, smart folders, cooperative authentication function between cellphones and laptops, and multi-device file management. The complete changelog has been given below.

Font:

Supports more flexible font adjustment, in which you can adjust the font size and width with a slider.

Neuromorphic Design:

Applies the concept of neuromorphic to UI elements. Simple colors, tones, shadows, and highlights are used to achieve a more realistic effect.

Smart Folders:

Supports pressing and holding app folders on the home screen to enlarge them and make the apps within them easier to access.

Notification Panel and Control Panel:

Allows you to swipe down from the top left of the screen to access the Notifications panel to view notifications, and swipe down from the top right of the screen to access the control panel for shortcuts.
Adds an audio control area to the control panel to make it easy to switch between different audio devices and apps. Allows you to quickly activate cross-screen cooperation by tapping symbols for Huawei laptops and tablets in the “Device +” area of ​​the control panel.

Cooperative Security:

Adds a cooperative authentication function between cellphones and laptops, which allows you to unlock your phone by entering the screen unlock password for the phone on Huawei laptop when the phone and laptop are connected through cross-screen cooperation are.

Multi-device file management:

Supports access to documents or pictures on the phone via a laptop without connecting the two devices with a data cable.

Huawei Share:

Improves the transfer speed of Huawei Share for faster file sharing between Huawei phones, tablets, and laptops

All in all, the OS is now nearly identical to the China-specific HarmonyOS 2. Huawei hasn’t said anything on what Android version EMUI 12 is based on but it’s likely Android 10 or Android 11.

It is mention-worthy here that the EMUI 12 update rollout for the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro, and Mate 30 Pro is still in its initial stages, so it may take a while to reach your unit.

Huawei Pay makes its debut in Singapore with an exclusive partnership with ICBC (The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) Singapore Bank. The app will come pre-installed on the Huawei P40 series and can be downloaded on other Huawei / Honor devices from App Gallery.

Huawei Pay launch in Singapore is in an exclusive collaboration with UnionPay. The mobile payment service by Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) can be used for contactless and cashless payments on Huawei / Honor devices.

ICBC Singapore bank is the first and the only bank to support the service for now. As part of the launch offer, users making purchases via Huawei Pay by registering their ICBC UnionPay credit cards between 1 April and 30 September will be rewarded with Huawei Points and cashback up to S$20 on every transaction. Additionally, users will be subjected to a welcome gift of 10 Huawei Points worth S$10, which can be used to make payments in Huawei AppGallery, Themes, Video, Mobile Cloud and more.

Since Huawei Pay supports contactless NFC payments in retail stores, it can be used by tapping supported Huawei / Honor devices on POS (Point-of-Sale) terminals instead of physical credit cards. The service makes use of devices’ biometric authentication system for security.

Additionally, Huawei P40 series will go on sale in Singapore from tomorrow, i.e. April 4. Launch offers include freebies like 50GB Huawei Mobile Cloud for 12 months, Smart View Flip Cover (worth S$58), and Huawei SuperCharge Wireless Car Charger (worth S$98, only P40 Pro). The Huawei P40 and  P40 Pro will be available in Silver Frost, Blush Gold, and Deep Blue Sea color variants for a price tag of S$1,048 and S$1,448 respectively.

In Singapore, the Huawei P40 series can be purchased from Huawei Concept Stores, major telco outlets, selected consumer electronic stores and online retailers like Lazada and Shopee.

Apart from Huawei Pay, Huawei Video is also launching in Singapore with the P40 series availability in the region. The video streaming service offers over 4,000 titles from BBC Studios. Further, the company promises to bring more partners to the platform soon.

Huawei officially unveiled the P40 series and Huawei Watch GT 2e last week at an online-only event in Paris. Long before that in November 2019, the Chinese telecom giant also launched MatePad Pro, its flagship tablet in China, which they eventually brought to Europe in February 2020. Now, the company is set to bring all of the above-mentioned products to Malaysia very soon.

Huawei has been facing difficulties in selling its devices in the international markets after the US government added it to the entity list in May 2019. But still, the company has been trying hard to bring its innovation to other nations apart from its home country China.

The biggest hurdle for Huawei to sell devices running Android is that it no longer has access to Google Mobile Services. Thus, all of its new Android devices including smartphones and tablets are devoid of Google Play Store and other most-used necessary Google services. This makes the Huawei-made devices a tough sell in global markets.

Thus, to overcome this situation, the Chinese tech giant released HMS Core (Huawei Mobile Services), which comes pre-installed on new devices from the company including the Huawei P40 Series and Huawei MatePad Pro that are about to launch in Malaysia. On the other hand, the Huawei Watch GT 2e, which is a sporty makeover of the original Huawei Watch GT 2 runs proprietary software.

The Malaysian launch, as well as the pricing of these Huawei devices, are unknown at the moment. However, the company is giving away a RM 30 discount voucher for simply subscribing to updates on these products on its official website. Ironically, this voucher cannot be used to buy any of the aforementioned products launching soon in the country.

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s P series of premium smartphones debut in the first half of the year followed by Mate series in the second half. Lately, the P series has been performing extremely well in the camera department.
