A New Step in Huawei’s Auto Journey

Huawei and Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) are set to launch the refreshed Stelato S9 in November 2025. The luxury sedan, positioned as a flagship under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), showcases how the tech giant is embedding its smart systems deeper into the automotive industry. This will be the first major update since the S9 debuted in August 2024.

Although the car carries Huawei’s design and technology, it isn’t built by Huawei itself. Instead, it represents the company’s growing collaborations with major automakers to bring its hardware, software, and smart driving technologies to the road.

Elegant Design and Refined Details

The 2026 Stelato S9 retains its large, flowing sedan design but adds new premium styling touches. The front continues with Huawei’s signature “Universe Headlight” layout, now upgraded to the “Brilliant Star River” design. A new “Universe Star” emblem and a “Nebula Through-type” taillight bar give it a more futuristic look.

With a length of 5.16 meters and a wheelbase of 3.05 meters, the sedan promises spacious interiors, particularly focusing on rear-seat comfort and luxury. Customization options include unique trims, alloy wheels, and electronic side mirrors.

Intelligent Driving and Power Options

One of the biggest upgrades is the introduction of Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4 autonomous driving system. The setup includes 4 LiDARs, 4D radar, and 36 sensors for 360° environmental awareness. This technology enables advanced driver-assistance and semi-autonomous driving features.

Buyers can choose between two versions: a pure electric (EV) model built on an 800V platform with a range of over 800 km, or an extended-range electric (EREV) model that offers up to 1,300 km using a gasoline-powered generator. Prices start at RMB 309,800 (≈ USD 43,500).

Strengthening China’s EV Ecosystem

The Stelato S9 isn’t Huawei’s first car, but it is the first vehicle co-developed with BAIC, expanding Huawei’s automotive footprint beyond its existing Aito, Luxeed, and Maextro brands. This collaboration reflects Huawei’s goal of merging AI, smart sensors, and EV technology into mainstream cars, strengthening China’s position in the global electric vehicle market.

For consumers, this means smarter, more connected cars at competitive prices, while for the industry, it signals a new phase where tech firms rival traditional automakers in innovation and intelligence.

Huawei, known for its telecommunications prowess, has swiftly established itself as a major player in China’s growing smart car technology sector. Despite facing challenges in its smartphone business due to trade sanctions, Huawei has strategically shifted gears to become a key automotive supplier, unveiling its advanced driver assistance system, “Qiankun”, at the prestigious Beijing Auto Show.

The showcase of Qiankun comes after just four years of intensive development, marking a significant milestone for Huawei in the automotive industry. Seven Chinese automakers have already integrated Qiankun into their vehicles, solidifying its position as the premier advanced driver assistance system in China.

One of the most significant developments in Huawei’s automotive journey is its groundbreaking deal with Volkswagen. The China-made Audi Q6L e-tron, set for launch in 2025, will feature Huawei’s Qiankun system, marking Huawei’s first collaboration with a foreign automaker. This move underscores Huawei’s ambition to expand its footprint beyond domestic borders and compete on a global scale.

Moreover, trade restrictions, particularly from the U.S., pose risks to Huawei’s global expansion plans, raising concerns about the future of “connected” car technology.

Nevertheless, Huawei’s emergence has reshaped industry dynamics, with legacy automakers seeking tech partnerships to stay ahead in the race. Chinese state-owned giants such as Changan, Dongfeng, and BAIC have embraced Huawei’s ADAS technology to remain competitive in the fast-evolving market.

At the recent auto show, Huawei showcased a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including vehicle control units, LIDAR, telematics sensors, optical sensors, and an innovative audio system integrated into headrests for personalized music experiences.

As the world gradually transitions away from gas and petrol-powered cars to electric vehicles, there’s still one caveat that EVs are lacking in comparison with their petrol-powered counterpart which is the time to “refuel their tanks”. For conventional fuel-engine vehicles, you can just top up your car with petrol in less than 5 minutes and go; but for electric vehicles, the time it takes to recharge the battery is normally 20 to 40 minutes depending on the battery left needed for the journey.

Huawei, the Chinese tech giant which sells not only smartphones, but also laptops, smartwatches, and even smart cars in China, is planning to shake up the industry with its revolutionary EV charging solution that promises to provide 200km of EV range within a single 5-min charge.

The news comes from Huawei Senior Executive, Wang Chao, who was a panellist at the National Chinese Electric Vehicle 100 Forum. In the forum, Wang boasted that since 2021, the company had rolled out its DriveOne smart driving solution across the country which included features such as smart IoT integration with HarmonyOS, navigation upgrades for drivers, and most importantly the solution provides the vehicle to recharge its battery to deliver 200km of driving distance within a 10-minute charge.

However, at Huawei, they always strive to deliver better products and services to their consumers. Wang mentions that in the next few years, the company is planning to reveal its cutting-edge 1000V EV charging solution that could deliver 200km of driving distance in just a 5-minute charge.

Earlier in the decade, Huawei had set out its plan for its development roadmap in the EV industry, and it was expected that by 2025, the company would have released its 1000V 600kW high voltage charging solution to the public, which recharge your EV battery from 30% to 80% in 5 minutes, providing a “fuel tank refill” like experience.

Huawei Auto COO believes fully autonomous cars will arrive in 5-10 years

Wang Jun, who in September 2021 got appointed as the COO of Huawei’s Intelligent Automotive Solution Business Unit, expressed his views on the development of smart cars during the 17th Super Car Forum today.

Wang said that Huawei originally specialized in the telecommunications field and its 30+ years of experience with ICT technology will help it benefit greatly as it forays into the smart car industry.

He also emphasized that Huawei aims is to help other companies build good cars, because of which it has partnered with BAIC, Changan, and GAC, all of which are major players in the EV market in China.

When the true potential of software-driven cars is achieved, Wang believes that true driverless cars will arrive and “change the current state of cars” forever.

This, in his view, will be realized within the next five to ten years and will eventually lead to a paradigm shift in car design. Cockpits have always favored the driver but after the realization of unmanned driving, the cockpit will be designed around the passenger (via IT Home).

Accordingly, in addition to investing heavily in intelligent driving technologies, Huawei is also investing in intelligent cockpits. The HarmonyOS ecosystem will be playing a major role in this, making it much easier for new companies to adopt smart technologies and communications to build smarter cockpits.

A good example of this already exists in the form of the recently launched Huawei AITO M5, developed jointly by Huawei and SERES. The vehicle offers a 10.4-inch curved LCD instrument cluster and a “semi-floating” 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latter runs on HarmonyOS and supports 3D face recognition.
