It is not easy to make a phone with moving parts water-resistant. This is one of the reasons why the ASUS Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7 series which have motorized cameras are not water-resistant. Now that ASUS is dropping that design, it has confirmed that the Zenfone 8 will have an IP68 rating.

In its latest teaser for the upcoming compact flagship phone, ASUS revealed that the Zenfone 8 will have an IP68 rating which means that alongside being able to withstand dust, dirt, and sand, it can also survive immersion in water up to a depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.

The Zenfone 8 will be the first ASUS flagship phone with an IP68 rating in years. Even before the Zenfone 6 and Zenfone 7, water-resistance is not a feature found in ASUS phones, so this is a big addition for the brand.

So far, ASUS has confirmed that the Zenfone 8 will also have an audio jack and its teasers have shown the phone has a hole punch at the top left corner of the screen for the front-facing camera. It will also have a display with a high refresh rate and a  Snapdragon 888 processor.

The rugged smartphone market is very competitive and every new entry should have something special to succeed. About a year ago, Elephone did just that by presenting the Elephone Soldier that would become the first rugged smartphone with a 2K display. Now, Soldier is on offer starting today until July 29th. During that period you can get it for $30 off on Gearbest at just $189.99. This is a really good price since it’s the same price as it was during the presale period last year.

The Elephone Soldier comes with a couple of spectacular features. For starters, it prides itself as the first IP68 waterproof rugged phone with a 2K display. Apart from that, the device comes with a bug, 5000mAh battery that is necessary to feed the 2K display and deliver up to 20 days of standby time. Other include the 10-core Helio X25 SoC coupled with 4GB/64GB and 4GB/128GB memory configuration. Also, there is a 21MP Sony camera, physical compass, and an SOS button. If you are interested, you can grab it on Gearbest until July 29th.

The Blackview BV7000 Pro is a rugged IP68 phone that is priced at just under $200. That price doesn’t get you just a phone that is waterproof and dust proof, you also get some pretty impressive specs.

The BV7000 Pro comes bundled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. On top of that you also get a 5-inch FHD display with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, a fingerprint scanner, a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. There is also a Mediatek MT6750T octa-core processor powered by a 3500mAh battery with 5V 2A fast charge.

All of the above features are bundled into a phone that is 12.6mm thin. Not impressive for your average smartphone but for a phone that is designed to be rugged, it is a feat.

The team at Blackview have released a new video showing the BV7000 Pro getting unboxed in a swimming pool. It is unusual but it is a unique way of advertising that the phone is IP68 certified. However we are not entirely sure that the accessories are waterproof, especially the charger. So don’t try replicating the video at home.

Nokia has already confirmed its plan to get back into smartphone manufacturing next year. The company is collaborating with Finnish company, HMD Global, which is made up of ex-Nokia executives; and Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn. The three of them will handle separate roles that will lead to the re-emergence of the brand.

While the only phone we have heard about is the Nokia D1C which sports mid-range specs, a source says the company is working on a flagship phone that will first launch in China.

The phone is said to come in two sizes: 5.2-inches and 5.5-inches, which will use a 2K AMOLED display. It will sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chip, run Android Nougat, and have an IP68 rating which means you should be able to dunk it in water with a maximum depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes.
