The iPod Touch was Apple Carplay before it even became a thing

Launched in 2008 to celebrate Ferrari’s 16th Formula One Constructors’ Championship win, the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M offered open-air exhilaration alongside its powerful engine and gorgeous design. But unlike other Ferraris that prioritize focused driving with minimal distractions, this limited model came with a surprising extra – a 16GB iPod Touch nestled in an Alcantara leather case.

It’s interesting to note that not all 499 units of the 16M sported the iPod Touch. Some came equipped with traditional Becker Cascade radios, adhering to Ferrari’s traditional aversion to in-car distractions. The iPod Touch docked in the center console, pre-dating the widespread adoption of Apple CarPlay. Ferrari, known for their driver-centric philosophy, has historically avoided touchscreens, opting for physical controls on the dashboard. This approach has softened in recent models like the Roma and 812 Superfast, which now incorporate central touchscreens.

While Apple offered a 32GB iPod Touch back then, the 16M came with the 16GB model, leading some to jokingly suggest Ferrari’s frugality considering the car’s hefty $313,350 price tag (around ¥2.269 million). Another theory suggests Ferrari’s choice of the 16GB version was a deliberate nod to the “16” in the car’s name.

With Apple discontinuing the iPod Touch in 2022, as its functions have been seamlessly integrated into the iPhone, this limited-edition Ferrari serves as a unique time capsule – a reminder of a bygone era of in-car entertainment.

Apple’s iPod touch units are quickly getting sold out after discontinuation

Apple had announced recently, the end of the iconic iPod touch after more than 20 years of its presence. The announcement was made earlier in the week and Apple stated that the product will be available until the current stock is exhausted. It seems Apple’s announcement has now triggered a rush for the iPod touch with some configurations of the music device already exhausted.

Millions of users of the iPod touch will recollect with nostalgia the groundbreaking entry of the device more than two decades ago. The iPod touch remains as a collector’s item and those still interested in picking a unit need to hurry while supplies remain.

The Apple iPad touch can be purchased from Apple’s online store. In Apple US online store, the 256GB variant of the device in any color has been replaced with a sold-out notice. The red variant of the 128GB model of the iPod touch also seems to have been exhausted. However, there are still other offline Apple outlets and reseller shops where these models could still be available.

The latest iPod touch is its seventh iteration and it comes with a 4-inch LCD, an A10 chipset, and 2GB of memory. It debuted in 2016 and offered three internal storage options namely 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The three variants are priced at $199, $299, and $399 respectively. The camera setup of the iPod touch includes a 1.2MP front-facing FaceTime camera and an 8MP rear camera. The iPod touch has a battery capable of delivering up to 40 hours of audio playback and about eight hours of video content. Internet connectivity is achieved only via Wi-Fi for the iPod touch.

Apple officially discontinues iPod Touch, ending the iPod series after 20 years

Earlier this week, Apple officially announced that it will be discontinuing the iPod Touch. This finally marks the end of an era and the company’s iconic iPod series that has been around for 20 years now.

The Cupertino based giant stated that the reason for discontinuing the product was due to the gadget becoming obsolete and out of date. Its features are now offered by other Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad. In other words, it has been more or less replaced in the current market. For those unaware, the recently discontinued iPod Touch was the last entry within the iPod family and was unveiled back in May 2019, which is around 3 years ago.

But now, the brand’s marketing chief Greg Joswiak said that “Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared. Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music.”

The iPod was first introduced back in October 2001, which is almost 21 years ago. Since then, the company had launched various iterations of the iPod, including the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, and the iPod Touch. But over the course of the years, all of these have been phased out. As of right now, the iPod Touch will still be available for purchase starting from 199 US Dollars from the brand’s website and retail stores, but only till stocks last.

Yesterday, Apple kickstarted its annual developer conference called WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) for the year 2021. At the opening keynote, the Cupertino-based tech giant unveiled the latest version of its operating systems, namely iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS Monterey. Here, in this article, let’s take a look at the list of devices that are eligible for the new update.

iOS 15 Eligible/Supported Devices

The list of supported devices for iOS 15 remains identical to last year. This means the 6-year-old iPhone 6S series and the 5-year-old iPhone SE are also eligible for the update. That said, here’s the entire list of supported iPhones and iPods.

Unlike iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, not all Macs running the current-gen macOS Big Sur will be upgraded to macOS Monterey. According to the official announcement, late 2013 MacBook Pro, 2013 MacBook Air, 2014 iMac, and 2015 MacBook are not eligible for the update.

This means only the following Macs will be updated to macOS Monterey.

The developer beta builds for all the above-mentioned Apple operating systems are already live. The public beta builds will be released in July. Last but not least, although many older devices are eligible for the new update, they may not get all the announced features due to hardware limitations.

New Apple iPod Touch to reportedly launch soon; renders leak online

It’s been a few years since Apple launched an updated iPod Touch but it seems that the company could be launching a newly refreshed version of the device pretty soon. As per the reports, Apple is planning to release the next-generation model of the iPod Touch.

The report, coming from Steve Moser of Macrumors, cites Twitter user @AppleLe257 as the source and has also shared some renders of the upcoming device which are created by a user that goes by the handle @Apple_Tomorrow.

Based on the renders shared, the upcoming iPod Touch seems very similar to the newly launched iPhone 12 series, featuring square edges and Face ID for unlocking the device. This will be the first time in around eight years as the design of the iPod Touch has remained pretty unchanged after the fifth-generation model in 2012.

Apart from adding facial recognition technology, it remains to be seen what else the company has planned to modernize this device. We expect Apple to increase the screen size from 4-inch to about 5.4-inch, similar to the size of the iPhone 12 Mini.

Given that the product is dedicated to music consumption, we expect the company to retain the 3.5mm headphone jack — a feature that Apple removed from its iPhone series a few years back. However, it remains to be seen what else ends up in the device’s internals.

The iPod Touch model that is currently available is at a starting price of $199. It will be interesting to see if Apple retains a similar price tag for the new-generation model or increases the pricing. Do note that this is just a rumor at this point in time so take this information with a pinch of salt.

Back in 2016, Apple got rid of the 3.5mm interface for the first time starting with the iPhone 7. Aside from that, the Cupertino giant dumped the digital headphone jack, wireless headset, as well as the true wireless headset. Following 12 major versions of the upgrade, Apple has finally completed its own ecological chain. Based on subscription services and app store, members are free to choose services such as QQ Music, and Netease Cloud Music. Apple launches new iPod Touch with a new chipset and new storage

Apple has announced a new iPod Touch. Other than a new chipset and a new storage variant, nothing else has changed on the hardware side. Nevertheless, there are some cool new software features too.

The new iPod Touch now comes with the A10 Fusion processor which powers the 2016 iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The SoC is paired with 32GB or 128GB of storage. Apple has also added a new 256GB variant. With the new A10 chips, the iPod Touch now supports AR games. Apple says it will also support Apple Arcade, its gaming service set to launch this fall.

The screen remains 4-inches in size with a 1136 x 640 resolution. There is an 8MP f/2.4 camera on the rear and a 1.2MP f/2.2 camera in front for FaceTime. The new iPod Touch allows you to FaceTime up to 32 people at once.

There is Bluetooth 4.1, dual-band Wi-Fi, and an audio jack. The device still charges via a lightning port and Apple claims its battery will last up to 40 hours for music playback and 8 hours for video playback.

The iPod Touch comes in Space Gray, Gold, Silver, Pink, Blue, and Red (Product RED). The 32GB version is priced at $199, the 128GB version will sell for £299, and the new 256GB version is priced at $399. It is already available for purchase on Apple’s online store.
