In a move timed with Amazon‘s record-breaking stock price, founder Jeff Bezos plans to sell 25 million shares of the company, valued at roughly $5 billion. This follows his initial share sales in February this year, marking the first time he’s reduced his holdings since 2021.

Even after the sale, Jeff Bezos will retain significant ownership with 912 million shares

Despite the sale, Bezos will retain significant ownership, holding onto approximately 912 million shares, which translates to 8.8% of the company. Currently the world’s second-richest person with a net worth of $221.6 billion, Bezos’ business ventures extend beyond Amazon, encompassing Blue Origin (space exploration) and The Washington Post.

Amazon’s stock closed at a historic high of $200 on Tuesday, fueled by optimism surrounding the potential of generative AI technology and its impact on the company’s cloud computing business. This year alone, Amazon’s shares have seen a 32% surge.

Bezos’ recent relocation from Seattle to Miami has also sparked tax-related discussions. While Washington state levies a 7% capital gains tax, Florida boasts no such tax, potentially saving Bezos hundreds of millions of dollars.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin announces plan for a ‘space business park’

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin has just announced its plans for a new private space station that is dubbed “Orbital Reef.” The new space business park is set to be constructed later this decade.

The company unveiled its plans earlier this week and stated that the new private space station will be built in partnership with multiple other space companies and is expected to be deployed sometime between the year 2025 and 2030. According to Blue Origin, the new Orbital Reef station will have a space capable of housing up to 10 people as a “mixed use business park” in space and will offer “exotic hospitality” for tourists brave enough to venture into space.

Notably, Orbital Reed is designed to offer a habitable volume which is comparable to the International Space Station. The company also added that its primary partner for the station is Sierra Space and other major names like Boeing, Redwire Space, and Genesis Engineering. Redwire executive VP Mike Gold told CNBC, “We’re just beginning to understand the tremendous implications that microgravity research, development and manufacturing can mean, for not only for exploring the universe and making discoveries but improving life on Earth.”

Sierra Space will be responsible for the LIFE habitat ((Large Integrated Flexible Environment; essentially an inflatable space station module) while Blue Origin will provide the space station’s “utility systems” and “core modules.” Redwire Space, on the other hand, will run the station’s payload operations and build deployable structures as well.

Caviar is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight with special editions of the iPhone 12 Pro/iPhone 12 Pro Max that honor astronauts Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong; Russian rocket designer, Sergei Korolev; as well as space entrepreneurs, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

The iPhone 12 Pro/iPhone 12 Pro Max Yuri Gagarin editions have aviation-grade titanium bodies with a navigator watch similar to the one the Russian cosmonaut used to track his time in space. There is also a miniaturized version of the Vostok-K rocket on the back. This version of the iPhone 12 Pro has a starting price of $8,920.

The iPhone 12 Pro/iPhone 12 Pro Max Neil Armstrong Edition ditches the colors of the Yuri Gagarin Edition for a monochrome design. Etched on the back of the phone, which is also made of titanium, is a drawing of the astronaut planting the American flag on the moon. The date of the moon landing is also etched on the phone along with a drawing of earth. This special edition has a piece of the Apollo 11 spacecraft and a starting price of $6450. Caviar will be making only 11 units and each unit will have its number engraved on the side of the phone.

The Korolev version looks gorgeous with its infusion of electroplated 999 gold on the titanium back and around the edge which gives it a unique appearance. Engraved on the back are the date the Sputnik launched and the words “The Father of Practical Astronautics” in block letters. There will be 99 units made and the starting price is $6760.

For the Elon Musk version, which starts at $6610, there is also a touch of gold on the back of the phone. There is a silhouette of the founder of SpaceX along with the planet Mars. Engraved along the ring circling the red planet are the words “The Beginning of Mars Colonization” and the date SpaceX was founded. SpaceX is 19 this year and Caviar will be making that exact number of this special edition.

There is also a custom-made version made for a fan of Elon Musk and SpaceX dubbed “Musk Be on Mars” that has engraved on the back a depiction of the Dragon spacecraft lifting off. This version has a starting price of $6910.

For the Bezos edition, the titanium back has a touch of blue and a silver feather that depicts Blue Origin’s logo. It also has etched on the back “Going To The Moon To Stay” a belief that Jeff Bezos. The date, April 29, 2015, which is the date the New Shepard rocket was first flown is also etched on the back. Caviar will make 99 units of the phone and the starting price is $5840

Amazon India rolls out electric delivery auto-rickshaws

Amazon’s founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, arrived in India a few days ago to meet with government officials and also attend a company event. Yesterday, Mr. Bezos took to Twitter to announce the roll-out of a new fleet of fully-electric delivery auto-rickshaws.

The move is part of the retail giant’s Climate Pledge to reduce its carbon emission and also switch to renewable energy.

In a report today, The Economic Times reported that Amazon said its fleet of delivery vehicles in India will include 10,000 electric vehicles by 2025. These vehicles will include both three-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. Amazon already began a pilot program in several cities and is now expanding it.

Some of the cities these electric vehicles will operate in include Delhi, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad, Pune, and Nagpur. So if you reside in any of these cities, you should keep your eyes peeled for these new vehicles.

India is not the only country where Amazon will be switching to electric vehicles. In the US, it has placed an order for 100,000 electric delivery trucks from automaker, Rivian. The vans are expected to be on roads by next year and should rise to 100,000 by 2030.

Amazon’s goal is to become carbon-neutral by 2040 which is a decade earlier than the target set by the United Nations Paris Agreement.

Flipkart, its rival in India, is also switching to electric vehicles. The retailer announced last June that it plans to replace 40% of its delivery vans with electric models by March 2020.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos arrives in India; plans $1 billion investment to digitise SMBs

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon has arrived in India, dressed in an Indian attire. He took to Twitter to reveal that he paid his regards at a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and also shared a video of the same.

He is on a three-day visit to India where he will be attending a company event in New Delhi and also likely to meet senior government officials. As Jeff Bezos comes to India, thousands of small traders across 300 cities have planned protests, claiming that the company is distorting local retail market.

Ashok Kumar Gupta, India’s antitrust chief, has said that big e-commerce companies in India should not offer deep discounts which can potentially hurt and small-scale brick and mortar retailers in India.

Hundreds and thousands of small brick-and-mortar retailers, led by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), have planned a countrywide protest against the company. CAIT has also accused Amazon and Flipkart of violating India’s foreign investment rules but the companies have denied the allegations.

During the event, Jeff Bezos said that the company will use its global footprint to export $10 billion worth of ‘Make In India’ goods by 2025. He also stated that Amazon is going to invest $1 billion in digitising the small and medium businesses in India. Amazon has committed $5.5 billion in India investments and sees the country as a key growth market.
