OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro, the brand’s last-gen smartphones are receiving new system update with July 2020 security patch, a couple of new features, and some fixes. This is the same update that was rolled out to OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro a few days back.

The new OxgenOS update for OnePlus 7T series come with different build number based on regions. The Indian version of the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro are getting OxygenOS 10.3.4. While the EU (Europe) and the Global variant of the devices are receiving separate builds – OxygenOS 10.0.12 (7T) and OxygenOS 10.0.10 (7T Pro).

Despite different build numbers, it is a common update for both OnePlus 7 and 7T series. Hence, the changelog remains the same for the models.

The new system update brings July security patch, new clock styles, new “Chromatic effect” in “Reading mode”, adds support for OnePlus Buds, fixes double tap issue in waking screen as well as the wrong display of SIM card names, and adapts Bluetooth hearing aid app connection under the Android 10 ASHA agreement.

Realme is rolling out July 2020 security update for Realme 5/5 Pro/5s/5i. The update not only bumps up the security patch level but also brings fixes and optimizations. The build number for the update is different for all the four handsets (except 5 and 5s) but the changelog is only different for the Pro model.

First, talking bout Realme 5 and Realme 5s, the update comes with build number RMX1911EX_11.C.53 and brings optimizations for flight mode (Bluetooth won’t be affected), battery icon while charging, third-party apps power consumption, and shooting quality in night mode.

Further, the update also brings fixes for status bar not displaying WiFi icon, black screen issue when switching to PUBG Mobile from the multitasking view, and greenish photo while using flash.

As we mentioned in the beginning, the above-mentioned changes are also applicable to Realme 5i. However, the update comes with build number RMX2030EX_11.C.53 for this device.

As for Realme 5 Pro, the July security update arrives with build number RMX1971EX_11.C.05. Just like the above-mentioned three devices, the update for this one also brings several optimizations and fixes.

For instance, it optimizes the transparency of swipe back gesture style, flight mode similar to the above models, and screen recording features. It also adds a feature called smooth scrolling and fixes some known issues.

Having said that, the OTA update for all the four handsets is being pushed in batches. Hence, it may take time to reach every unit.

Samsung launched the Galaxy M31 earlier this year as the first phone in the series to feature 64MP quad-camera setup. It will be soon succeeded by Galaxy M31s, which will be the first device in the series to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Ahead of it, Samsung is rolling out July 2020 security patch for the Galaxy M31 with build number M31FXXU1ATG2. This update brings RCS support for Vodafone Idea and even adds Glance, a content-driven lockscreen wallpaper service that promotes stories from the internet.

Galaxy M31 is considered to be an alternative for people who don’t want to invest in smartphones from Chinese brands in India. My dad bought this phone (6GB + 64GB) in March and since then, it has received multiple security patches including the one which bricked some units.

As months passed by, I began to notice slight lags here and there. Last week, while my dad was in a Zoom meeting, the device prompted overheating and exited the app. On top of that, the company has been adding new ways to monetize via system updates like the Discover feature in the app drawer and the newly added Glance, which is found on handsets from most Chinese OEMs. Thankfully, both of them can be disabled.

Anyway, though the Samsung Galaxy M31 is a good phone for casual users, it does have monetization issues (advertisements) like phones from Xiaomi and Realme. However, they can be turned off easily when compared to software on devices from other companies.

Having said that, the degradation of the performance of Exynos 9611 in just a few months is a big concern. It is worth noting that even Galaxy S20 Ultra with Exynos 990 has similar issues. The South Korean tech giant must really work on to improve its in-house silicon for smartphones.
