Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold 16″ laptop hits store shelves

At this year’s IFA event, Lenovo unveiled the second-generation ThinkPad X1 Fold PC. The brand has finally made the laptop available, starting with the US market. Interested customers in the US can now buy the 16.3″ ThinkPad X1 Fold starting from US$2,499. Here’s everything you need to know about this device.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold specs

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold boasts an impressive 16.3-inch foldable Samsung OLED display, sporting a resolution of 2024 x 2560 pixels. This display offers 600nit brightness, DCI-P3 color coverage, Dolby Vision support, and On-cell Touch functionality, with added support for a stylus.

When folded, the device transforms into a 12-inch display, and it can be seamlessly paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, delivering a laptop-like experience. In contrast, the original X1 Fold featured a 13.3-inch display that reduced to 8 inches when folded.

The Lenovo Next-Gen ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with a choice of 12th-generation Intel Core U9 processors, which includes options for i5 and i7 CPUs. It has an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics card. You can get up to 1TB of storage with its PCIe Gen 4 SSD, and it supports a maximum of 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

It also includes an Intel Visual Sense controller and a 5-megapixel IR resolution webcam for video conferencing. This camera is capable of auto-framing, regardless of the tablet’s orientation, be it in landscape, portrait, or laptop mode.

Connectivity options include three USB Type-C ports, with two supporting Thunderbolt 4. Lenovo has also introduced the choice of a Nano-SIM tray for 5G Sub 6 connectivity with LTE support. The laptop houses three speakers equipped with Dolby Atmos technology.

Furthermore, the device now offers a full-sized keyboard with a haptic touchpad, connected via Bluetooth 5.2 and rechargeable through a USB Type-C port. Lastly, the laptop comes with MIL-STD-810H durability certification.

A couple of years ago, Lenovo had launched ThinkPad X1 Fold as the world’s first computer with a foldable display. Now, the company has announced a new version of the device, dubbed Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2.

The first-generation product seemed like a proof of concept and after learning from the feedback, the company has announced this second-generation product. The company has upgraded or improved almost everything in this new device compared to its predecessor.

The highlight of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is its display. The device features a 16.3-inch foldable Samsung OLED display with a screen resolution of 2024 x 2560 pixels. It offers 600nit brightness, 100% DCI-P3, Dolby Vision, and On-cell Touch with Pen support.

When folded, the device shrinks to a 12-inch display and can be paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, making it feel like an actual laptop. For comparison, the original X1 Fold had a 13.3-inch display which shrinks to 8-inch when folded.

Under the hood, the device is powered by the latest Intel 12th generation U-series Core i5 and Core i7 vPro processors, offering ten cores for better performance. It can be configured with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB SSD.

There are three USB Type-C ports, two of which support Thunderbolt 4. The company is also adding an option for a Nano-SIM tray for 5G Sub 6 with LTE. There are three speakers with Dolby Atmos.

The laptop features a 5-megapixel RGB+IR camera with an optional Intel VSC (Visual Sensing Controller) for security. It can auto-frame regardless of the tablet’s posture – landscape, portrait, laptop mode, etc.

It now comes with a larger and full-sized keyboard with a haptic touchpad. It is connected through Bluetooth 5.2 and is rechargeable via USB Type-C. The company has revealed that the laptop meets MIL-STD-810H standards for durability.

As for the pricing and availability, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 has a starting price of $2,499 and will be available for purchase from November this year.

Lenovo has provided a sneak peek of its upcoming ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 laptop. The device comes with several improvements from the ThinkPad X1 Fold that was launched in 2020 as the “world’s first foldable notebook. An improved design was visible in the latest images of the laptop. It has a detachable keyboard and promises to deliver a better performance than its predecessor

The ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 was teased in a 44-second video that revealed some changes from the first-generation model. While the ThinkPad X1 Fold was powered by Intel’s Lakefield processor which was ill-fated due to several performance issues, the second-generation model will retain an Intel processor with excellent performance. This will also mean a more optimized battery performance for the new laptop. The Intel processors of the new Lenovo foldable laptop will have both vPro and Evo certifications.

The detachable keyboard of the new laptop will contain the TrackPoint pointing stick. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold Gen 2 comes with slimmer bezels and a sleek design overall. The short video reveals the hinge design of the laptop is similar to that of the Razr 2022 with a few differences.

The latest teaser of the upcoming Lenovo foldable laptop and its detachable keyboard has raised expectations for the device. Lenovo is mum on a release date, and neither has any pricing information been revealed. We could expect more teasers and leaks if indeed the device is set for release.
