Since then, a number of videos have showcased the smartphone but the latest one provides more stunning aspects of the device. The video was published by a South Korean YouTube channel and further highlights the uniquely designed smartphone. The packaging of the device was unique, containing a charger, a USB cable, and some paperwork.

It is unclear why LG did not roll out the smartphone before exiting the market. It features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The rollable has a 6.8-inch flexible POLED front display and a 4,500mAh battery. The front display is expandable into a 7.4-inch screen.

The LG Rollable has touch-sensitive controls on the left edge to turn on the display and adjust the volume in place of physical buttons. It has a 64MP primary camera with OIS and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. A circular fingerprint scanner sits underneath the main camera at the back. The video also highlighted the workings of the rollable display. It can be expanded or contracted seamlessly with the swipe of two fingers. The changing form factor of the rollable is also accommodated with its UI also transitioning.

The YouTube video clearly highlights the unique features of the LG Rollable which is creaseless, unlike foldables. However, the rollable section is less solid than the rest of the display. It also easily flexes when pressed. The stunning design is open for other OEMs as LG has already closed the lid on it.

A recent tweet by a Twitter user with the name @FrontTron indicates that the company’s staffers in South Korea have the opportunity to purchase the few remaining models at an extremely cheap price.

The tweet also detailed around 3,000 units of the unreleased models to be available to the Korea-based staff of LG Electronics. The devices on offer are the LG Rainbow/Velvet 2 Pro and the LG Rollable, both of which were never released.

The Velvet 2 Pro is what should have been the successor of the LG Velvet that was released last year but it wasn’t released before the company announced its exit from the smartphone market. The stand-out feature of the Velvet 2 Pro is its pressure-sensitive touch sensor button which controls the volume and serves as the power button.

The Velvet 2 Pro is an all-around improvement from its predecessor, although the Twitter post did not offer much on the specifications of the models that were on sale. We, however, know that it comes with a triple camera setup at the rear and a front camera housed in a waterdrop notch.

The leak mentioned that the auctioned devices would only enjoy six months of technical support and no software updates. It also indicated that the Velvet 2 Pro would be sold to staffers for around $170. The outlook is that there could be a surge of demand in-house. The company is also prohibiting a resale of the models by successful buyers.

The moves by LG in selling off unreleased products is a culmination of its decision to pull out from the smartphone market, which was made public in April 2021. There could still be a few other unreleased LG models that may also be sold off via the in-house template.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021, LG has teased the much-touted rollable smartphone. Rollable smartphones are gradually becoming a thing and although LG doesn’t have one yet, there have been several leaks surrounding an upcoming foldable from the tech giant.

LG basically used the rollable smartphone seemingly held by someone to project the “virtual” stage at its event with Jin-hong Kim who is the SVP and Head of Global Marketing at LG speaking at the event.

Editor’s Pick: OnePlus Band for Rs 2,499 (~$34) launched with AMOLED display, 14-day battery life, fitness tracking sensor and more

It is just what it is, a teaser, and nothing more. LG didn’t mention anything about the rollable smartphone at the event. That isn’t a surprise, though, as CES is not typically where LG announces its smartphones. LG usually keeps any smartphone announcement at CES to mid-range and entry-level models and not flagships. The company may unveil the rollable smartphone later this year, perhaps at MWC.

LG has a rollable OLED TV that is actually available to buy, so seeing a rollable smartphone is not a big surprise. It’s essentially the same thing but in a smaller package.

https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.mp4

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen a rollable smartphone though. Last year at CES, TCL showed off a rollable smartphone. However, it was a non-working prototype. It basically had a printed screen on it. So you could roll and unroll it, but couldn’t open Twitter and other apps on it. OPPO also showed off a rollable phone last year, which actually worked.

So rollable phones are likely to be the next big thing, in the world of smartphones. And it’s going to be impressive to see how this works.
