South Korean giant LG, which announced the LG Velvet, and LG Wing this year, is looking to expand its ties with ODMs in 2021. Previously, some of the LG smartphones from 2018 to the current year(2020) were actually made by ODMs. And now, a report from Korea now says that the company will outsource more smartphones from ODMs next year, including the LG Velvet2(Tentative).

LG Velvet 2 outsourced from ODM

A report from TheElec says LG will seek ODMs to make more of its smartphones in 2021. In fact, the report explicitly mentions that by 2021, ODMs will account for 70% of LG’s Smartphone production. For the unware, ODM is an Original Design Manufacturer. Simply put, it is a company that designs and manufactures a product that is ultimately sold by the other(here LG). That said, the next iteration of Velvet, the Velvet 2(Tentative) will reportedly be made by ODMs.

Besides, LG’s current ODM partners are Wingtech, Huaqin, and Longcheer in China. Interestingly, the report also says LG began seeking ODMs in 2018. Back then, only 10% of LG devices were made by contract companies. However, the number increased to 30%, and 60% in 2019, and 2020 respectively. This suggests that LG’s earlier plan to expand its market may come true soon. Plus, the new report also falls in line with the earlier ODM strengthening strategy for launching products to mass markets.

Other plans for 2021

Apart from Velvet 2, successors of LG’s Q92, LG Stylo, will also reportedly be made by ODMs. Still, LG is said to churn out the next flagship codenamed Rainbow, rollable device(codenamed B Project) on its own. The device, Rainbow, will likely have similarities to the V series with 5G, Snapdragon 8xx SoC, and more.

On the other hand, B Project will be the second output of LG’s Explorer Project says the report. It will likely allow users to pull one of the sides of a screen to roll it out and expand the display. If we recall, the first device out of LG’s Explorer Project was the LG Wing 5G that launched recently in the US, Korea, and India.

Anyway, all of the devices mentioned above including Velvet 2 are likely headed for a 2021 release. However, if the report is true, Rainbow will launch by Q1, 2021 whereas B Project will debut in March of next year.

The LG Wing 5G was made official in September for the global markets. The dual display phone is one of the most ambitious products from the brand since its main screen can be rotated clockwise in 90 degrees over its second screen. Today, the South Korean company announced the LG Wing 5G and LG VELVET 5G in India.

LG Wing 5G and LG VELVET price and availability

The LG Wing 5G has arrived in India with a price tag of Rs 69,990 (~$948). The phone comes in two colors such as Illusion Sky and Aurora Grey. The dual-screen phone will be up for purchase from Nov. 9.

The LG VELVET has landed in India with a price tag of Rs 36,990 ($504). With the Dual Screen accessory, the device carries a price tag of Rs 49,990 (~$677). Its sale will begin on Oct. 30 in India in colors like Aurora Silver and New Black.

In its T-form factor, the LG Wing 5G offers a new level of multi-tasking where the main screen can display an app and its other features can be accessed on the second screen. For instance, users can watch a movie on the main display and adjust its playback settings on the second display. Also, it can be used as a gimbal motion camera since it comes with features like Gimbal Mode and dual-screen recording.

Coming to the specs, the LG Wing 5G has a 6.8-inch P-OLED display that offers a Full HD+ resolution and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio The device is fitted with a 3.9-inch G-OLED secondary display that offers an FHD+ resolution and a 1:1.15 aspect ratio. The main screen is integrated with a fingerprint sensor.

The device is fitted with a pop-up camera of 32-megapixel for capturing selfie shots. The rear side of the LG Wing 5G features a triple camera system that comprises of an OIS assisted 64-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens with a 117-degree field-of-view, and a 12-megapixel gimbal camera with a 120-degree FOV.

The Snapdragon 765G upper mid-range chip fuels the LG Wing 5G with 8 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The phone offers 128 GB of native storage and it has a shared SIM slot for using a microSD card. It is fueled by a 4,000mAh battery that comes with 25W fast charging support and 10W wireless charging. It comes with other features like dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, NFC, and USB-C. The phone runs on Android 10 OS. Lastly, the device comes with an IP54 rated and MIL-STD-810G rated chassis.

LG VELVET specifications and features

The LG VELVET that has arrived in India is its 4G version that features the Snapdragon 845 chipset. It has a 6.8-inch P-OLED FHD+ display with a 20.5:9 aspect ratio and an in-screen fingerprint reader. It has 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for additional storage.

The LG VELVET has a front-facing camera of 16-megapixel. The rear side of the phone has a triple camera setup that includes a 48-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens with 120-degree FOV, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The phone houses a 4,300mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging through USB-C. It comes with other features such as Wi-Fi 802.11ac, VoLTE Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

LG has finally set the launch date for its Swivel screen smartphone in India. The company has reportedly sent an invite that hints the launch event of the LG WING smartphone will take place on October 28.

The invite that’s sent to a few of the media shows(via Fonearena) the hashtag, “#ExploretheNew” with LG WING’s design in the background. As per the invite, the launch event will happen on October 28 at 11:30 AM-12:30 PM IST. To assert this, LG India’s official Twitter account has already started teasing the new LG WING with the #LaunchingSoon tag. If we recall, LG first announced the WING smartphone on September 14. It later went on sale in South Korea for 1,098,990 won($940) and in the USA for $999.99. That said, the availability and Price in India is something we will have to wait till the launch event.

LG WING Specifications

For the unware, LG WING is the first smartphone from LG that came out of it’s LG Explorer project. It has a dual-screen, but unlike the LG G8x, both are attached to the same body. A swivel holds the outer screen that rotates clockwise by 90-degrees while the secondary screen is fixed behind. It features a 6.8-inch FHD+ P-OLED rotating display with a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels. The secondary screen is a smaller 3.9-inch and has a resolution of 1240×1080 pixels. Both the screens have 395 and 419 PPI respectively.

Powering the device is Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G SoC. It is paired with 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage variants. On the back, the LG Wing has an Oppo Reno4-inspired triple-rear camera setup. It features a 64MP f/1.8 primary sensor, a 12MP f/1.9 ultra-wide with 120° FOV, and a 13MP f/1.9 sensor with 117° FOV. Further, there is a 32MP pop-up selfie camera at the front.

Besides, the camera has various features like a Gimbal mode through which users can control the angle of the lens virtually. In addition to this, Other features include a 4,000mAh battery with support for 25W wired and 10W wireless charging, a MicroSD slot for storage expansion up to 2TB.

That said let’s wait and watch if LG overcomes the lackluster pre-orders scenario after launching the device in India.
